LeBed before or after cardio exercise?
Does anyone have an opinion or information about any benefit to doing LeBed exercises before and/or after a cardio workout? Meaning, to minimize chance of any exercise-induced flareup. Thanks!

You know, you can email Sherry Lebed Davis and she responds, and I'm sure she'd answer the question.
Here's her contact page, and when I emailed her, I got a personal reply
-
Thank you Kira. Great suggestion, and I will email her now.
-
I think it's a great question.
-
I sent the email and I'll certainly report back here with the response I get. Just did my 45 minute cardio routine followed by 'lymphatic opening' from a Lebed DVD. Can't hurt!
-
Sherry answered me ten minutes after I sent my email question to her. Here is what she said:
"In my book Thriving after Breast Cancer, essential healing exercises for body and mind, we use certain warm ups that should be done prior to all cardio workouts to get the LE system working properly first before moving on."
And I just clicked to purchase the book at Amazon.

Sherry sent me a follow-up after I thought to ask her if the Lebed warm-ups would have good effect after cardio, i.e. use it for warm up and for cool down. No surprise, she said 'yes, definitely.' I guess the only downside is time required.
-
I use them as a cool down, but it sounds like maybe I should do them as a warm up instead. That's why I love this place - we learn so much from each other.
Carol - is that a standard poodle in your avatar? They are such athletes!
-
Remy is indeed a standard poodle. And he's such an athlete that he's pretty famous for flying leaps executed with great derring-do. Standards have such long legs that their leaps can be jaw-dropping. Unfortunately, his aim is not always perfect. Two months ago he misjudged a landing and got a leg wedged between two docks...ouch...and he's been sporting a cast ever since. Doesn't seem to bother him in the least...still flying and leaping and we are having trouble getting the thing to heal, because he just doesn't understand English when we explain that the cast is not a crutch and he needs to baby that leg!
-
Definitely a warm-up, because it's clearing the available lymph nodes so they can receive all the lymph the exercise will pump.
Carol, how old is Remy? He looks line an adventurer!
Binney -
Remy is 5 but he's got the energy of a 2 year old!

Over the last couple of weeks, I began using my Lebed DVD consistently after owning for a while. Started getting lazy with MLD and I find it easier to do the DVD daily. I have been doing before my walks or weight routine and then after. I usually do the first part of the DVD - the lymphatic opening - before my walks since I usually roll out of bed, have my breakfast and go. If I have time after, I will do the entire DVD, but if not, then just the first part again. However, I make sure I do the entire DVD at least once a day, which often ends up being in the evening. If I'm not exercising, I like to do the whole thing in the morning. The stretches are great! I think I am starting to notice a difference in how I feel as far as the LE. Also, I haven't been having any post-exercise swelling like I used to.
-
Hi Tina,
That is very helpful information. Thanks!
Carol

You're welcome, Carol! I am so pleased to have discovered how well Lebed works.
-
Thank you for this info! I usally do Lebed after exercising ... now I'm going to do it before!
-
A quick question:
If I change my routine and do the LeBed lymphatic opening portion in the morning ... is it OK to do it without gloves & sleeves? I usually do it in the evening when with them on.
-
That's a good question to send to Sherry Lebed Davis. Up above, Kira gave a link to find her email. She really did answer my questions promptly. Let us know what she says.
-
I have two of Sherry Lebed Davis' DVDs and she is wearing a sleeve and glove or gauntlet in both. My therapist told me to wear mine when doing them. My two cents worth. Becky
-
Becky, she doesn't wear them on her YouTube videos, and I emailed her about that, and she finds she swells if she exercises for a while, but the videos are short, but for the 40 minutes, she wears the garments. (Also, Juzo supported the DVD....)
I wear my glove--goes to mid-forearm-- while doing it.
I think, just like Sherry herself, if you don't swell without garments, then don't wear them. If you do, then wear them. In the PAL protocol, I think they wore them during resistance training (those with documented LE) but not stretching.

For my truncal LE, I always wear my compression tank when I do any kind of exercise. Because I had some truncal swelling in the past when I lifted weights, took a long walk or did cardio, I also wear my sleeve and glove now during weight training. When I walk, I decide whether to wear the sleeve or glove based on how my trunk is behaving. Same thing for the Lebed. After my surgery in April, and until recently, things hadn't quite settled down as far as consistency with swelling. It was hard to tell where I was because all of my chest measurements were scrapped after deconstructing. However, when I saw my LE dr a second time after my surgery, my chest measurements were higher than the first time. Honestly, it was hard to tell if she was measuring in the exact same spot since I have concave areas. It was also August, which is my worst LE month.
Anyway, I really listen to how my body is feeling, and I will even wear my glove and sleeve on a day that I have any odd sensations. I don't want to take any risks. But doing the Lebed seems to have finally put me in a good spot. It has allowed me to exercise without truncal flaring. It has been three years since I have felt like I could gain some control over my swelling, pain, and fitness. I like the PAL program, but I LOVE the Lebed. It has helped me turn the corner and has become an important tool in my LE tool belt. -
Thanks, everyone!
You all have pretty well answered my question.
I would definitely wear sleeves and gloves if I did the whole video because all the reaching and lifting of the arms in the whole of the video would definitely make my fingers swell.
I just wasn't sure if the light stretching alone would warrant a glove and sleeve. I just wondered if I was going to do anything 'wrong' by not wearing them for that portion alone. Because I don't know how to wrap and I do swell at night I have to do MLD when I wake up (because I'm trying to get the fluid down that has built up during the night) and just wanted to make sure I wasn't setting myself up for a problem by doing the lymphatic opening portion without wearing them.
Thank you. It's also very encouraging to know that Sherry herself will answer emails so promptly.
