yes, I think most insurances pay for fixing the other breast for symmentry I know mine does I have BCBS
-
I try not to think of it as being normal again - things are always going to be different from now on, but things would have changed in a year even if i hadnt got breast cancer . The old me has gone - I am left with a slightly scared at times but a new me, a new me who doesnt fret at the small things anymore, a me who takes time to think what is important and what isnt, who does things that i want to rather than what i feel i should!
Yes theres rather a lot of ironing waiting at times but i have caught up with old friends via email and letter, made new friends through this site, i remember birthdays ( which is a miracle!)and the hubby has put on a stone from home baking!!
I am back at work now, working afternoons because i have my rads in the morning and i have to leave at 7 to get through the traffic. All through chemo i stayed well, avoided the germs, now i have a stonking cold - Typical! Only 25 rads to go - by easter i will be there!!
Good to see your face ravdeb - you too brenda!
Debbie -
As I read all of your(our) posts I can't help but think we are better people because of this, aren't we?!!!! You are all remarkable, strong, awesome women!
OK...let's hear it for my 3 year old who DIDN'T pee in his pants today at preschool while I was at chemo!! This has been a challenge. I blame it on all the change in our lives lately. New town, new preschool, etc. I sooo don't stress about potty training but preschools sometimes do.
BTW, I think it's a federal law/mandate (something like that) that insurance companies have to pay for reconstructing the other breast in order to make both breasts symmetrical. -
Rosemarie...congrats to your 3-year-old It's definitely those things that can make you feel positive.
For those of you who have posted pics...it's SO good to see what you all look like finally
To all you AMAZING WONDERFUL INSPIRATIONAL ladies...thank you for always being there for me and getting me through the rough patches and complaining with me, joking around with me, being mad with me, being sad with me, etc. I feel so bad for women who think they have to go through all this on their own. I would be in a fetal position without you all Thanks for being such friends. I still say we should all meet up one day and have a weekend together
Love,
Amy -
Normal? What's normal anymore? Everyone has something nowadays it seems. I am still so scared about the future but have to realize that at Stage 1 I am probably ok ... according to statistics.
It's also hard for others....they see us with our hair growing back, our painted on eyebrows, our smiles and think we are ok. They don't see our insides.
They don't know about TheresaPW or MomCasey. We do, we get scared over and over.
We try to Move Beyond but get Set Back. -
I feel like i have come into something halfway through here - who is Theresa?
Congrats to Rosemaries son ! I think people forget how hard it is for the kids in all of this. I try and put a positive spin on everything for them but they are more savvy than we give them credit for. We seem to have that many adverts for Cancer research at the moment - one of which has a bride trying a dress on , crying, saying " my mum should be here" Catherine who is 10, turned to me and said " you will be there wont you mum?" That was hard!!
While i am having rads i dont see the kids in the mornings as they are not up - i work at their school so i go in a little early in the afternoons to watch them in the playground - i cant wait until gone 3 - i felt really bad about not being there but as far as they are concerned its no big deal , lots of parents work shifts.
Reading back we have come a long way, now i feel stupid worrying about cutting my hair off!
Debbie -
Debbie,
Theresa was one of the women on the boards here who passed away recently.
Rosemarie...congrats on your son!!!! It is really hard on the kids, this I know. My kids are much older and they understand better what is going on. Sometimes that makes it just that much harder for them. My 16 year who is my youngest, still won't look at my head and hey...I've got some hair on it now though it's still covered with a scarf. My daughter calls me all the time from work and makes sure she kisses me in the morning and at night no matter what time it is and no matter if I'm sound asleep or not. It's that unknown of what will be that keeps my kids so much more in touch with me and yet, they are so worried..even though I feel just fine...but still going through chemo.
And Debbie...I know what you mean... I was also so worried about my hair at the beginning but it's the one step we have to pass in order to keep moving. It's all a part of it and boy..it was major worry at the time. My how we have grown since then!!!!!
you ladies are terrific! amy..thanks for writing what you wrote...each and every woman here is amazing and I've made some wonderful new friends that I would NOT have made had I NOT gotten bc. Strange, but true and I'm grateful for all of you.
ravdeb -
I was watching Amazing Race last night and was thinking about last year and the girl shaved her head....I thought I would never or could never do that ..... LOL ..... yeah, I could do it now. Hair is hair. It's just hair. This cancer trip was way more than hair and so much more to worry about than the hair on my head. I'd be bald forever if I could make a bet I'd beat this.
-
Good Morning to all. Today i am scheduled for my last Taxatere, then 2 weeks of Xeloda and then hopefull I am finihed with my Chemo treatments, no rads are planned my next step reconstruction. I am a little nervous How do they know the Chemo did the trick? Do they run more scans? Exrays? I will be taking Tomaxafin or Arimadex will run one more test to see if I am pre or post menopasal. I like other girls on this site hope we can all stay together to keep in touch with all that is going on with our lives. the no hair on my head doesn't bother me as much as the no eyebrows and eyelashes.
-
Sherry, I learned to draw on my eyebrows real well. I have even have different 'shapings' that I do with them. It's much easier than tweezing. Regarding eyelashes, I miss them, but I draw a lot of eyeliner all around my eyes to hide the fact that they are only about 1/4" long.
-
I have that concern...about whether the chemo did the trick. They don't know, in my opinion. Most people, from what I heard, get scans only if there is some sign of mets..pain, whatever... But I also know that for lung mets, for example, there can be NO pain. So, how do they know if there is???? Worries me. I have 2 more Taxols and then rads next.
As for eyebrows...mine are thinning...again. I mean they stopped and now they are thinning again. MY eyelashes "shrunk" in my OLD age (I'm 51). I used to have long lashes but not anymore. I use a lot of eyeliner so that my eyes show up more and I fill in my brows with light strokes with the eyebrow pencil. I do have brows...just a bit thinner than they were. So far this does not bother me. I want more hair on the top of my head so I don't have to wear a wig or scarf!!!!
Be well, all you strong, courageous women.
ravdeb -
I know that they will be doing 'tumor markers' ..... taking our blood every so often and that will tell them if the cancer has spread.
I am still concerned about the pain in my sternum. I have doctors visits at the end of this month and will ask them again. They did the bone scan and nothing came back .... so what could it be???? -
Terynsmom- have you had a cough ? My dad has breathing probs and when he gets an infection he says it feels like he is being pressed hard on his sternum. Or you could be holding yourself funny without knowing? Keep asking the dr!!!

I got four stencils in different styles at the Rite Aid pharmacy for $3.99. You put it where the eyebrow should be and brush on the eyebrow powder. My fake brows look fabulous!! I was even contemplating getting the shape tattooed in, it looks so cute! -
I have hair growing!
In the bathroom at work, rewrapping the turban I am wearing today, I took a good look at my head under the strong, flourescent light. Yup, it's hair. Less than 1/8th of an inch in length and pure white. I've been growing white hair for some time but blended with my original brown, I was just looking gray before chemo. Now, this new hair is all white at this stage. It is very, very soft - like the down on a new little birdie - but it is growing. I immediately went to see the the nurses that I work with here and they confirmed what I was seeing . . . NEW HAIR !!
Now, my eyebrows and eyelashes have thinned out considerably in the 3 weeks since I finished chemo. I kind of hope the eyebrows come back matching my hair. But, I've heard they are slow growing so I may not have a matching set for awhile.
Feeling pretty good overall, although I need so much sleep. I never feel like I get enough, no matter how early I go to bed. I guess that growing new hair is hard work! Ha-ha!
Hope you all have a great weekend of enjoyment, peace, and improving health! -
marymelodi-
I am so happy for you! I can't wait for the moment when I discover hair growing! I had a dream last night that my eyelashes were growing in really thick and long. When I woke up this morning I actually thought it was true. But when I really thought about it for a few seconds, I then realized it was only a dream! Bummer, bummer, bummer.
Terynsmom -
I think I asked you this b/4 relating to your Sternum pain...have you had a Berium Swallow X-Ray?
Laura -
Debbie -
Your children are very fortunate to have you as their "Mum".
Laura -
Congrats on the hair growing in marymelodi!!!! Yahoo!!! We can be twins as mine is snowy white too!!! Mine is still growing and if I could just get a bit more on the top I will be able to reveal it to the world!!! Just a little tiny bit more to go!!! Can't wait! But my friends here said I look cute in my scarves. Went somewhere today in my wig and I said hi to everybody and then went back to the care, whipped it off and put my scarf back on. Whew! I suddenly felt like ME...the NEW ME again. I like the new me! My wig is just like I wore my hair before it all fell out. I will never go back to that style or that color since I dyed my hair black which is my natural color. But, my hair is snowy white now and I like it...very chic :-) But way too short!!! Grow, grow, grow!!!!!
Congrats marymelodi on the hair growth!!! It's fun to watch it grow, slowly but it's growing!!!!

Hi,
back from trip to Georgia. Visited with DH, he's been awy since Nov...great visit. Georgia was warm and sunny. I needed that after cold Canadian winter.
Read through log of last week . All sounds good with the troops! Before we know it we will have new pcs of hairy heads-real hair. Can't wait.
Ravdeb did you ever find out how Theresapw died so quickly? One day she was on the boards and two days later she died, that is so awful.Nice picture, good to put a face on you!
Rosemarie glad your son hit his mark. No diapers was one of my happiest milestones when kids wre younger.
I have never seen stencils for eyebrows around here, anyone know if they are available on internet? Mine are rapidly disappearing in last month.
While in Georgia my Swiss husband found a mountain and true to form suggested we walk up. That was tough but I did it! When I download my pics I will post one of me at the top.
Take care all,
Fists up! -
That's good news Marymelodi! It's exciting to watch it grow!!
Thanks for all the sweet words regarding my son! Now that I'm home with him it's a lot easier to be consistent with the potty training. Once a week he goes to daycare while I go to chemo and it's been a nightmare!
4 more Taxol's to go! I've really been feeling it this week. I had two awesome weeks with very little pain but the past 3 days have been awful...hate to complain...UGH!
Mary Anne, glad to hear you had a good time in Georgia! I can't imagine being without my husband for that long. You are remarkable! My husband flew to Texas yesterday and will be back late tonight and I'm pouting. He'll also be in Atlanta for 4 days next week...that's the real reason I'm pouting!
Have a great day everyone! -
Ok figured out how to put pic on, here is me three days ago after climbing a mountain! I did it.
Fists up! -
Mary-Anne -
Wow! You did it and you look fabulous! Congrats.

O H M Y G O O D N E S S !
It's my Birthday today and I got the greatest gift of ALL!
M Y H A I R H A S S T A R T E D T O G R O W !
It's just like some of you have described! It's like the down that covers a baby chick. I can't stop feeling it. It's really soft. Now, every Sunday morning (for who knows how long), I am going to have my hubby take a photo of the top of my head so we can look back at the progression.
For those still waiting - hang in there. I was convinced mine would never start. You'll just wake up some morning and it will be there.
W O W !
Laura -

Graycie -
Mary Anne, GREAT picture and what a great accomplishment......It's funny how we all tend to look alike without our hair....I thought I was looking at me....HA
Graycie -
Happy Birthday Laura! I'm so happy for you!!
Mary Anne - Awesome picture!
Amy - wow, finishing rads!!! Congrats!!! I am so happy for you too!!!
I keep chanting, 4 more weeks, 4 more weeks!!!!!! I've been sore under my affected arm and ribs - sort of been freaking out a little the past 2 days. It's not the same kind of pain I get with Taxol-it feels bruised. I did read some posts where other ladies were experiencing pain there as well and they were fine but it sure would be nice to not worry. UGH. Oh well, time to cook dinner... -
Happy Birthday, Laura!!
Wow, Mary Anne! Did you climb up the hill bald??? You look terrific! Fists up to you!!! -
Yes Terynsmom, I climbed the hill bald.Every single person who walked by looked directly at me and said Hi. It was weird to have that kind of effect.Don't know anyone in Georgia so felt fine with it.Actually am fine bald around most close friends and family. Would go bald in public at home too but it would probably disturb too many people. Once summer comes though I will lose my headgear for sure. By then should have at least a deep fuzz.
Getting psyched for 7/8 round of chemo on Tues. Last two rounds have landed me in hospital so am hoping I will behave this time. Fingers crossed.
Fists up!
