October's Daily Encounters with "pink stuff"

I think you missed reading a lot of the information in this thread. A lot of the pink stuff money is not going to research etc, it's become a huge marketing campaign that scammers are infiltrating. We have to pay attention and ask questions. Just because someone slaps a ribbon on something is no guarantee the money ever benefits one single breast cancer program or patient.

1athena1 ... Spot on!!! You hit the high notes of the article!!! Wonder when more people are going to take the time to critically analyze the issue like those people in the article did.
-
i forgot all about breast cancer barbie
-
The straw that broke the camels back for me, was tiny pink ribbons stamped on my organic eggs! Yep 12 little ribbons peeking at me, screaming at me... YOU HAVE BREAST CANCER! There went my appitite for the fab omelet I was ready to make!
-
Regarding Barbie: "$2.50 is donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for each doll sold, with a guaranteed minimum donation of $25,000.00" assuming you purchase it new from the proper reseller. linky

I wouldn't want my money going to Komen, frankly. Did you read what was above?
I'd rather spend it on non-whitewashers (or pinkwashers) like hospitals and specialized cancer centers. And organizations not afraid to tell the unvarnished truth about the disease.
-
I don't know if what I'm saying is going to come out right, but here goes:
It seems that cancer awareness, like the football promotions, are to make women aware enough to get a mammo in order to "catch" bc in time. That's fine, but I'm not sure how many women will heed the message. I've known two types of women - those who have gotten mammograms and those who won't or are afraid to.
Also, I don't think I'm hearing enough about a cure. Those of us who are Stage IV are in serious straits unless cures or treatments without severe side effects are found.
I feel that this disease is too serious to be treated lightly (let's have a run - let's wear pink!), but if we get serious and show the real disease, people will turn away and not want to face it (if we don't pay attention, it will go away).
If I'm not making sense, I attribute it to being befuddled about what I'm going though.

amontro you are making perfect sense. This is why quit smoking campaigns have changed from showing messed up lungs to timelines of all the things that improve when you quit.

Here are today's pink encounters:
Walgreens:
Ulta:
They had pink stuff in all the windows accross the storefront:
In the store there must have been at least 15 displays....here is one of them:
Bed Bath and Beyond:
Just thought you all would want your daily dose of Pink! Oh and at Ulta they asked if I wanted to donate a dollar for breast cancer and I said "no thank you, I have been donating my body for the last 10 months during treatment"....the poor gal's face. I just told her that while I was glad they are soliciting donations to raise awareness I am very aware and I am trying to forgot that I had BC and the pink stuff is making it nearly impossible this month and I can't wait for November. She was understanding.....I could not help myself.

just read today's Times article on the pinkwashing Queen, Ms. Brinker. She disgusts me. Defensive, self-centered, and briskly dismissive.
I did the Race this year and last, but no more. Article made me decide to bag it. Henceforth, I'll send my registration fee to the community mammogram van.
At the risk of starting a political debate --which I don't want-- I think this is where big government is useful. My sister in laws' purchase of those goddamned Yoplait cups is NOT going to get us a cure or somewhere close (although I'm grateful to my amazing in-laws for their love and support). Ever notice it's laughably small amounts? Science = money. Research = money.
I work in a hospital - and the place has pink ribbons on EVERY door. EVERY.SINGLE.ONE. runners with pink ribbons covering most surfaces. whole departments decked out in pink.
I don't doubt folks' good intentions and caring. but this shit does not hit the mark. and sadly - we're the ones to wake people up. God knows I wish I didn't have the insider knowledge, but it is what it is.
Thank God my 13yo daughter already knows the pinkwashing is bullshit.
-
and go, MDG, go!!! good for you. i think the re-education of society sometimes happens like that - one person at a time.
-
Cycle-path.......PRICELESS.
-
cycle-path do not even get me started on that topic. And this woman (and many others) can't get health insurance till 2013… maybe never if Obamacare is over turned.
-
Lago- What do you plan on doing with that pink duct tape?!
-
Dear GroovyGirl - my son IS the football player
last weekend, they were suppose to wear pink socks, pink shoe laces, and then if needed pink tape. I had a long conversation with him - would football players wearing pink make a difference? Would it mean that someone would get checked? He must have thought about it because on the day of the game, he wore the shoelaces (mandated).
But, it was also parent's night. So, I drag myself out of my warm post-chemo coccoon and go to the game. we are lined up - all of the varsity players and their parents, when someone knocks off my hat. My husband jokes about how "the dome was exposed" to a now quiet crowd. Then, another dad mentions that it probably would have been a stronger statement had the football players shaved their heads to match mine. So, if seeing my bald head caused a mom to get something checked- great. But, since it is a small school - most of the parents either know what I have or if they were curious, they could ask and get an answer in two minutes.
However, the cheerleaders had the whole thing going - socks, t-shirt, bow-ties. I know most of them by sight - fewer by name. And after the game was over, some came over and mentioned how much was raised and isn't that great? I was polite and thankful - they did not choose to do this, and maybe someday, one will be vigilent when the time comes. However, one of the more brighter ones did mention that she was surprised that my son did not wear more pink. She explained it to her friend that we had given to breast cancer this year - my son doesn't need to give anything more.
So, I am glad that the pink is over for our football team. I know that some of my son's friends have mentioned that they did not know that parents could get cancer and just how difficult it is to deal with it.

And so much more: linky

Not exactly sure but I like the pink better than standard silver.
-
I will echo elmcity: mdg, cycle-path (that was nothing if not poignant) AND elmcity - go!!!
-
omg! cyclepath, i got too wrapped up in my little narrative/rant and forgot about kudos to your beautiful, bittersweet piece. you said it all, my friend.
your post is what should be shouted from all corporate media outlets.
well, October is almost over - and we always have each other to lean on.

Beer Pong table for the cure:
Also, today I saw a Volkswagen dealer that's having Test Drives for the Cure, but I didn't get a picture.
-
Although I liked very much what that hair stylist had to say, I should have made it clear that she is not I. She's a woman named Stephanie Sautter: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniesautter

Today I went to Wallgreens and the cashier asked the lady in front of me to donate $1.00 for bc.she screamed NO.and walked out.then the cashier looked at me and shrugged her shoulders.i said to her DONT EVEN GO THERE WITH ME....Poor lady she had/has no clue. Then my friend came over and took one look at my face and pulled me out of there.I HATE HATE HATE PINKTOBER!!!!!!
-
LOL at beer pong....anyone found any pink beer yet? Heck they have green beer for St Patty's Day, I am sure they could make pink beer if they tried.....if you are going to buy the pink beer pong table, you may as well have pink beer for it...and pink motrin for the morning after
-
mdg, maybe you could just mix the beer in with the Pepto Bismol at the START of the night, rather than saving the Pepto for the next morning?
-
That would be good...does Pepto have a pink ribbon on the label at this time? Just curious....

I did find a pink beer online (just out of curiosity). The label does not have ribbons on it but it seems to be pink:

Well maybe next year we can have Pabst Pink Ribbon beer
-
mdg - i stopped at Walgreens this morning and picked up one of those donation cards. i have an app on my phone that let's me scan barcodes and check prices. out of couriosity, i scanned the barcode on the donation card to see what would happen and a $100 camera came up. the fine print on the donation card states "Walgreens will give 100% of the total scannable proceeds collected in October to Susan G. Komen for the Cure."
maybe the barcode is one that is in-house for Walgreens, but it did have me wondering about that "scannable" thing.

There's still surprisingly little of it in my area. I'm still watching for the "Breast Cancer Shovel" that came out last year in a gardening section of my local grocery store. This gardening shovel was painted pink and had the pink ribbon on it, and they actually called it the "Breast Cancer Shovel." I can't imagine anyone wanting to buy such a thing.
I've only seen three pink promotions in my area. A cosmetics store has a "pink collection" that gives a portion of the cost of each sale to the Breast Cancer Society. My local grocery store is selling chocolates under the title "Cure by Chocolate". The wrapping is pink, of course, with the ribbon. And also, they have started selling little pink cupcakes for the cure.
You have to look for all this, though; it isn't jumping out at me the way some of you have described the promotions in your areas.

OK it this weird. My type this code on photobucket was "382 titydays" I did not make this up. I wonder if that's part of pinktober at photobucket?
