Here we go again!
Two years ago I was diagnosed with DCIS (left breast), had a lumpectomy and radiation. Last week I had a mammogram, and today at my 6 month check-up with my oncologist, he told me I need to have a diagnostic mam. on my right breast. He said the radiologist needs a closer look at what seems to be calcification behind the nipple. This is the exact same thing I heard 2 years ago, calcification behind the nipple. So I am in a bit of shock, thinking this can't happen again. Have any of you ever had DCIS a second time in the other breast?

I'm sorry to hear this news and send hugs. I've not had this happen to me.

It can happen. Once we've been diagnosed with BC one time, whether it's DCIS or invasive cancer, our risk to be diagnosed again, in either breast, is increased. So it can happen and it does happen.
On the other hand what also happens is that calcs develop that are totally benign. 50% to 60% of all women develop calcifications and most of the time they are benign. So just because you had DCIS last time doesn't mean that you have DCIS this time. I had calcs in my other breast that required a biopsy but they turned out to be completely harmless. Hopefully your's will be harmless too!

I second what Beesie wrote (as I often do, she is quite wise). I, too, have calcs in my other side and they are benign. Wishing you the best of news.

Thanks! I keep telling myself it's just calcification, and that the chances are slim, but the chances were slim the first time I was diagnosed too. Just don't want to go through it all again. Thankfully my diagnostic is tomorrow, so I don't have to wait long. Hoping to not need a biopsy.

jmb5 - what was your outcome? I had DCIS 2 years ago in my left breast, had lumpectomy, snb and radiation, just found out I have it now on the right side. This time it is a smaller area. only 4mm, and intermediate (last time was high grade, aggressive) , so it has been suggested that I have a lumpectomy and rads again or have a bmx with reconstruction. I just can't wrap my head around bmx for 4mm intermediate DCIS, seems to me most of it would have been removed in stereotactic biopsy
