what about the birth control pill?

I want to go on 'the pill'.  I know I have a hormone imbalance...too  much estrogen.  I think I want to go on a progesterone only pill because my periods are so bad.  They really affect my quality of life.  Has anyone gone on the pill after treatments?  My risk of recurrence was put at about 4% which is so low.  I just had a 6 day migraine because of my period along with some other nasty things.  I am done.  Just not sure if I can get a Dr to go along with me.

wow, I think that is a really complicated issue.  It seems like there is a huge quality of life issue here.  If I had 6-day migraines I might be willing to accept the additional risk, assuming it's not huge.  I think you should talk about this with your oncologist as well as gynecologist.  Seems like you are the best person to decide whether the trade-off is worth it.  good luck.  d

I was on the pill for 10 years (on and off). As soon as I got diagnosed with IDC, ALL of my drs told me to get off of pill and never take it again. I asked if thats what caused my cancer. They said there is no evidence that the pill causes breast cancer, but it was an ingredient that helped my tumor grow. Scared the crap out of me and I will never go on the pill again. My periods are now back to their old ways...crampy & heavy. BUT I am on Tamox, so they probably will stop all together. There are ways to balance your hormones naturally though so you have better periods. Good luck with your decision!

Mom3:  It's a touchy issue with doc's so you might find it difficult to get a script - however if you do your research and find a doctor who works in the more natural/holistic areas I believe you might be successful.. I use a natural estriol topically not for birth control obvsiously but to keep me a bit "younger"  <grin>...  It's considered a risk but small enough so that it helps satisfy some of the symptoms of perimenopause without much of the product being obsorbed..  Good luck and please bring your info back when you've had a chance to research and speak with you docs!!  Best, Deirdre

BUT I am on Tamox, so they probably will stop all together.

Not sure where that comes from? If anything my periods have gotten heavier (and less predictable) on Tamoxifen. Tamoxifen doesn't inhibit estrogen, so you can still get periods, and as it mimics estrogen it can actually increase your lining quite a bit.

As for the pill, you might consider an IUD, which is still a risk but more local. Or some sort of testosterone-based treatment, which can reduce the severity of your period. As for the migranes, there are treatments other than hormones that can help (my wife uses a beta blocker for this purpose). Definitely find a good OB to discuss all the options.

On one of the bc risk calculators I found on the internet (probably not a good source, but...) it gave me an increased risk of bc if I had been on the pill within the previous 5 years.  And I was diagnosed within that 5 years.

I had taken the pill pretty much forever, and now wish I had just had my tubes tied after the kids.  Funny enough, I was terrified of them putting air in my abdomen.  I should have been more afraid of them putting needles in my boob....

Xtine..I am getting a little off the subject of the pill..but period cessation can happen on tamoxifen. Mine are becoming few and far between and my drs tell me not to be surprised if they stop all together. Everyone responds differently to tamox. I would trade getting my period back and stopping the hairloss. Yep..surprised I still have hair.

Thanks everyone.  I do feel like quality of life is so affected that my small risk of recurrence may be worth it.  I don't want estrogen as I know I am making too much and that would just make things worse.  I am thinking of a progesterone only one.  My GP does have more of a holistic approach and she agreed to give me a script for progesterone to take from ovulation to period.  She was not 100% keen on giving it to me but I don't know what else to do.  We talked about beta blockers but I only get the migraines with ovulation and my period.  Funny thing is my dh had himself fixed as I never wanted to go on the pill again! Ha!  I hate taking anything!  I guess I'll fill the script this week and hold my breath!

I had this same problem!! I was told that if I was hormone positive, I could no longer take the bcp. So they recommended removing my ovaries. Was supposed to have it last spring but had to cancel the day before because they didn't have me sign paperwork 31 days in advance for surgery. I was sooo mad. Saw surgeon this summer and she said maybe have a hysterectomy and take out uterus too. She said it will shrivel up eventually and since its for making babies, I deemed it an unnecessary organ lol. I saw an ob-gyn for a consult and decided to have the tubes, ovaries, and uterus out. The pill would be much easier, but I don't want to risk feeding any cancer cells that may be floating around or ready to go.

mycinnamon - I have thought about having my ovaries removed and it has been mentioned to me by my gyn.  I'm just not excited about another surgery, removing a healthy organ(s), and having zero estrogen.  The whole things just stinks.  Migraines that typically last 3 days and come during ovulation and period are no fun.

I had been on the pill for almost 30 years. As soon as I was dx'd, my gyne called me at home when he got the report and told me to stop them NOW. My MO and surgeon told me the same. I was  ER+/PR+ as well. I'm not sure, but I would think if you are PR+, a progesterone only pill would not be a good idea. If you have an ER+/PR+ tumor, it's like adding fuel to the fire by taking BCP's that contain esgtrogen and progesterone. That's what I was told anyway. My sister had the same dilemma and was limited to condoms (and she had a BMX). I'm done with having kids so I plan on having the Essure done soon. I'm interested in what your doc tells you.

I too was told to stop the pill.  Have you tried any other options for dealing with the migraines?  I don't know what they are, but they must exist.  Maybe accupuncture would be worth a try?

The medical community is not really very clear on what PR + means.. they know that the tumor "reacts" to progesterone but they don't know if it reacts in a good way or a bad way.  In fact there are many practioners who still prescribe progresterone (as they did years ago) for a pr+ individual.  And there is discussion within the pathology groups whether they should even be testing for progesteron +.  So it's just not clear if progresterone is a good thing (yes there are many arguments for this) or a bad thing...

I have a Mirena IUD...it's progesterone, not estrogen.  My gyno and my onc have said it's fine to keep it.

Oh, and I'm PR- so maybe that's why.  But I was also told that the IUD is designed to have very little hormone in it and it's supposed to not circulate through the body--just stay in the uterus.  But def ask your onc and your gyno!

My surgeon was the one who told me to stop taking birth control pills and never take them agan. I was 40 and done having kids, so my OB recommended Essure. Well, the procedure failed twice for me, so I ended up getting my tubes tied. To help with heavy periods, I had a uterine ablation which was the best thing I ever did. No more periods! The recovery period was annoying though... for about 4-6 weeks, I had to wear a light pad because there was fluid that leaked while my uterus healed, but after that I was fine, and it was SO worth it.

My gyn talked about the uterine ablation.  My issue with it is it does nothing for the actual hormone imbalance.  I wouldn't have a period, which would be heaven, but I would still have all the hormal junk that goes with it.  I really want to 'fix' my hormonal imbalance!
