European MLD??

  I was wondering if any of you know anything about the "European" MLD?  I'm in a small town in Ohio at my folks and have not had access to a MLD therapist for 4 weeks and won't return home for another 10 days. I found a gal here at the local hospital who claims to treat LE but is not LANA certified. She said she uses the European method and has had alot of instruction, experience, and training. Any info out there??  Thanks!   katiejane

    Katiejane, MLD originated in Europe. Germany. They have whole hospitals there that are strictly for therapy intensives for lymphedema patients, where they do MLD and re-wrap every 8 hours around the clock, do group exercise sessions, and all eat a sentible diet together in a dining room. As for trainers, the names Vodder and Foldi come to mind.

    Complete Decongestive Therapy was introduced to the U.S. from Germany (the head of the NLN, Saskia Thiaden, came from Holland originally to help start LE therapy here.)

    That said, there is also a sort of pop "lymph" massage that's a staple at up-scale spas, which also originated in Europe. So check it out. Since she's at the hospital the chances are good she actually knows what she's doing with her "European" MLD. But you never know. At least 135 hours of specifically LE instruction, at least 2/3 of that time hands-on would be the standard for training, here or in Europe, so you could ask about that.

    Don't know how helpful any of that is, but you know enough about LE treatment to be able to judge if she's doing anything truly wacky and calling it "European." Let us know what you discover!

      Thanks Binney!!!  I feel pretty confident that I will be able to determine if she really does have the knowledge/experience she says she does. The appointment is on Sunday and I will let you know how it goes!!!

      Well, the thearpist was a no show so that's that! Guess I'll be doing self management ufor another 2 weeks.   Katiejane
