I am new to this site and find it very comforting that there is someone that can relate to what you are going through.  I was diagnosed in Nov-10 with microcalcifications and a 5 cm lump.  I had a biopsyand it was cancerous, HER postive, stage 3.  I had a lumpectomy and to my surgeons surprise, I had DCIS which she wasn't expecting.  She suggested a mastectomy but I refused and decided to see a nutritionist.  My nutritionst took an analagy of my blood and saw no cancer.  For five months I took vitamins and juiced everyday and ate nothing but raw food and fish (not shell fish).  I did have two spots of concern but with all I was doing, I kept it contained.  I went for a MRI recommended by my doctor and they diagnosed me with 2 suspicous areas of concern.  My doctor convinced me to have a mastectomy.  I had my right breast removed and my path report said that the margins were 1cm clear all around and it was non-malignant.  I had a tissue expander inserted at the time of surgery and is now filled to the max.  It is very uncomfortable but have to live with it until I have reconstructive surgery.  Apparanently, they now only take the fat from your abdomen and not the muscle; this makes for a more comfortable recovery.  I am still waiting for an onco appointment but am not planning to take any further treatment.  I hope this makes sense, I have so much more to say but didn't want to make my first intro so long.

Hello!  sorry you have joined us.

I was diagnoised in Nov '09.  DCIS grade 3.  I had surgery, radiation and am now on tamoxifen.  I haven't found the subsequent treatment to be too bad.

Your diagnois with a later mastectomy is not that unusual.  There are other women here who have gone through the same thing.

Do you have a schedule for your reconstructive surgery?  There is a section of this board for women dealing with reconstruction that you may find useful.
