Hi There,

I was wondering if any other women on this forum volunteered for the the Metformin Clinical trial. It is a drug used for diabiates, very successfully I might add. There is some proof that is also might reduce recurrence in breast cancer patients. I volunteered for the study because my recurrence rate is high 1/10 and I thought WTH. I also wanted to do something to help the study of BC. I'm not totally selfish! LOL

    I am not part of this trial, however my onc Rx'ed Metformin for me as someone at high risk (ADH.)  I am not diabetic.  Let's hope it works!

    I am going to ask my onc about this at my next appointment. To my knowledge my blood sugar levels are normal, but there is diabetes on both sides of my family, and I do wonder if insulin plays a role... I know there is some evidence emerging to support that. Great that you are contributing to the body of research.

    Hi I was wondering what dosage are they given you of metforim I am type 2 diabetic I have been ot metforimn before as well as glybride I am now only taking glybride as I now have more control of my diabetas but if metformin helps with breast cancer I think I should tell my famiy Dr to give me just the metformin.And its a wonderful thing you are doing being in the study.     Hi all,

    Thanks for the support. I am not sure whether I will get the drug or the placebo, it is a blind study that will not be revealed for five years.

    I am not diabetic, in fact I am in excellent health besides having cancer. I also think that insulin has a role in cancer. I ate a lot of refined sugar ( was never overweight ) throughout my lifetime. I do think my lifestyle contributed to my cancer.

    The study starts at the end of the month so I will keep the Canadian thread informed.

    I just signed up. My onc also offered to prescribe it off label for me, so I know I am getting the real thing, Leaning toward that option if I don't like what I hear when I meet the researcher,

     I tried to sign up for the Metformin trials but was 1 week late. Had to be with in a year of your first surgery. I was quite dissappointed.

    I'm just starting my second week of......?

     Does anyone have any clues on how to tell whether one is on the placebo or the real deal?

    My Onc is one of the principal investigators for the trial so there was no way he was going to prescribe it off label for me.

    As fas as I know there is no way anyone knows until the final reveal. It is all computer generated and perfectly random. I have been on the "metformin" since August and have experienced side effects from the drug. I have read about the "placebo effect" and even asked a Dr. if they make the placebo to mimic side effects. He laughed and repeated the placebo effect information.

    My onco type score was 27, I need all the help I can get.

    JMW, you should maybe just try to ask your GP to prescribe.  My integrative doctor/internist prescribed it for me as she's aware of all the clinical trials testing it right now.  It has little to no side-effects and my onc was cranky, but relented to me taking it. (I've been on it for 8 months with zero side-effects.) I've read of quite a few on here just asking their regular doctor to prescribe...and you wouldn't have to wonder whether you're getting a placebo or not.

    I volunteered but did not meet their criteria. However, a friend is in this trial and she said that if you eat a loaf of white bread and get the runs, you have the real deal, not the placebo. (Or try a loaded ice cream sundae, whatever is sugary and floats your boat.)

    hey Timerdog - I see your hair is growing!  I see you are one of the Canadians who did the oncotype test, also on the metformin trial. I was just talking yesterday with a woman who also got the oncotype test and is also on the metformin trial. she said she was practically the first in ON to get the onco test. She finally explained to me about it - not available back in 2008. Great! But I had a gp at that time interested in those kjnds of things and she tested my blood glucose level (I think that was ii - or was it insulin - whatever) and said it was low so favourable for my prognosis. anyway - wishing you well!

    ps are you going to try the white bread to see which side you're on?? or maybe, just visit tims and go nuts.

    Hello kmpod,

    My mom just started a Metformin clinial trial 2 weeks ago to go along with her chemo and Herceptin.  She started the study drug a week before any other treatment was started and was either going to be placed in the active drug group or placebo group.  We are virtually certain she is getting the active drug given constant diarrhea after she eats anything.
