October's Daily Encounters with "pink stuff"
OK ladies....October has just begun and I can't believe all the pink awareness stuff. While I am glad people are raising awareness, I wish they would put more money towards a cure instead. I don't know about you ladies, but after spending the last 10 mo's in BC hell, I really don't care to see the pink stuff EVERYWHERE I go. Maybe it's because this is still so new to me, but the displays in Staples the other day made me want to run quickly for the door (see below). Being sarcastic as I am, I have started taking photos on my phone of my daily encounters with pink. Here are a few I have experienced. Anyone else have photos of pink stuff they would like to share? I would love to see who can find the craziest pink display....anyone in?
Old Navy:
Well I didn't expect to see pink stuff at Costco in the refrigerator section. Yes, pink yogurt...I guess they should suppor the cause since the yogurt is most likely full of hormones that fuel BC...
I innocently went into Staples to get some folders and this is what made me want to run for the door!!!
My "favorite" (said sarcastically) is the Daily Minder...yes, a day planner. I personally have enough "daily minders" already of my BC....
Who could miss this display of printing paper?
Yes, let's be sure to "print for a cure".....
Oh and just when I thought I could leave and not see any more pink, here is what was waiting for me at the check out counter:
Please tell me I am not the only one running from pink this October. Is anyone going to humor me with photos?

my first year I felt just like you...it was like everything was a reminder I could die. Two years out it bugs me less. If the items benefit BCRF I am happy to see them.
-
!!!! In Staples??????
I haven't exactly ventured out to many stores in the past week, so I've only come across a few small displays. But I did have my first good-intentioned-coworker moment. One woman sent an email to a few of us saying a local salon was offering pink hair extensions (or just a lock woven into your hair), and did any of us want to do it to support me... I figured if it makes them feel good, I'm okay with it, but I did tell her that I would much rather they support an organization directly rather than pay the $8 or $10 that supposedly will go somewhere to support some type of program.
I'm a writer, and I've been mulling over a Pinktober article/op-ed for a few weeks. Maybe it's time I started writing it.
-
I actually try not to go shopping much during October.
Yes rachelvk, please write an article. Like cookiegal, I am also 2 years out, but the pink stuff still makes me want to puke.

I was diagnosed the second week in September, just as the dispalys for BC Awareness month were ramping up. It seemed everywhere I looked I was faced with reminders. A week into diagnosis, when everything was still unclear-the possiblility of mets still open, a spot on the other breast, hadn't told the kids, no treatment plan yet, I took a desperately needed break from the testing to finally buy myself my first pair of good sunglasses from the upscale sunglass store (to hell with being cheap this time around!) As soon as I walked in I spotted the perfect pair, just the right shape and color. I quickly put them on and fell in love. Then I spotted it. Etched into the lower corner of the right lens was a tiny curved ribbon. Out of the thousand sunglasses in the store I had somehow picked out the special edition breast cancer glasses. Argh!
A month later I can look at all the merchandising with some perspective and even humor, but at the time it all seemed like an additional kick in the teeth.

I call it "pink washing" - what we used to call "green washing" when companies that POLLUTE like mad, make a "donation" to an environment al cause if you buy their product. Of, course, if you read the very fine print, it's a "donation" of .00000000001% of the purchase price.
If we KNEW the money was going for research - good research, I think most of us wouldn't feel so USED by all this Pink ( I call it PINK PUKE Month) - and being asked to click, click, click, save box tops, eat yogurt ( I happen to be dairy free!) is annoying, and I just avoid it when ever I can.
Thank goodess the pink is only one month. This request to "click, click, click" seems to go on until someone does? Maybe not, I don't know. Not being on Facebook, Twitter, or any other "social media" I also avoid some of the junk that way too. SO, looking forward to following this thread to seeing the most ridiculous use of PINK!
-
I saw the pink ribbon on dog food last year. Wonder if it was raising $$ for doggy B/C...they do have five times the mammaries that we do!
-
Was in Walmart just the other day and saw a pink Swiffer Wet Jet. I am a year out and last year the pink drove me crazy. It seemed to be everywhere I looked, but this year I am more use to it I guess. But I don't need it in my cleaning supplies to remind me.

In your spare time, Google this title: "The Big Business of Breast Cancer". You should find an article from the Marie-Claire magazine. Really nails the Pink-splotation.

Oh....check out this site's 15 strangest BC awareness items. LOL!

OMG on #6!

Pink is my favorite color and now has a whole new meaning to me. I try to look at the bright side of things and now see pink as the color of strength, sisterhood, love and support, all the things that I have found since my diagnosis the first week of September. I have been blessed with wonderful new friends and some old friends returning to show me their support. I know I have a long road ahead, but I also know I can get through becasue of how you all have inspired me and given me the strength to get through to this point. Regarding the color pink and all the breast cancer slogans -- I'm sure my opinion will change after I begin treatment. I am already sick of hearing about loving tatas and so forth.

OMG, your post is sooo funny. I thought I was the only person who felt totally overwhelmed by PINK. I start chemo on Oct 11th and just can't seem to get a moment away from stupid boob cancer reminders and just need to breath for a moment. I even received pink junk mail the other day. I realize that I am over sensitive at the moment and usually would have never have a negative word to say about those who are trying to lend support. That being said........enough already, good Lord! I sure hope all this pink shit from retail establishments is sincere and really is meant to support those who have to cope with this disease and not just an easy way to "jump on the band wagon". Sorry if my thoughts have offended anyone, talk about mis-placed anger ha ha. On that note, Have a happy day:)
-
A "pink" White House??? This is a bit much, even for me, and I'm fairly pink-tolerant!
-
I don't care if it DOES benefit BC research, I say fooey. As Chickadee says, it's exploitation.
I won't patronize any of these outfits that exploit BC to make themselves look like good citizens. Period.
-
Hi, I just came across pink lint rollers, Guess they thought of everything. Now we have our own color link roller to pick up those stray hairs that we may lose. SharonH
-
Nice job, mdg. Those are great finds.
"rock" started a thread similar to this 3 years ago, giving it the name, "Pink: Not just for Pepto Bismol anymore." It's in the "Moving Beyond Cancer" forum. (That seemed like an appropriate place, since all the pink stuff was keeping us from "moving beyond cancer.") I bumped that thread so y'all can see 3 years' worth of this stuff. In the meantime, here are two I remember from that thread.
The official title of this awareness campaign is, "Kick Cancer to the Curb":
This next one really doesn't need a comment. The photo is copyrighted, but re-publication is allowed if the source website is cited: http://www.illdigital.com/breast-cancer-awareness-garbage-truck/ :
This afternoon, my dh and I were driving through a town near where we live. As we entered that town, I noticed that all the road signs had huge, pink ribbons tied around their posts. Even some of the trees and bushes had those big, pink ribbons on their trunks. I was thinking, "Hey, that's really sweet -- someone in this town must have had a baby girl, and everybody is celebrating her birth!" I turned to my dh and pointed out the ribbons, noting that someone in that town must have a new baby daughter.
Even as I said the word "daughter", I had this sudden realization... "DUH!". Yeah, right.

I don't have pictures but I saw uggs with pink ribbons embroidered on them at the mall, and saw pink ribbon bagels at pan era bakery,,shaped like a ribbon and in a pink box..then I was at safeway and the whole time I was shopping they were talking about bc over the loud speaker..
-
I will have to find some more things when I run errands next week.....I did see a huge display a few weeks ago at Kohls in the kitchen department. It was all baking stuff - spatula's, mixing bowls, measuring cups, etc......blech! That would ruin baking some evil, bad for you brownies!
-
Oh my gosh marial~
I about had a breakdown at the Safeway today and I am 2 years out from treatment!
I have a large family and was doing a large shop. Every couple minutes the check out people are on the intercom saying "I just got a donation for Breast Cancer - Woo Hoo!!!"
Woo Hoo? So Safeway is now making Breast Cancer awareness a cheerleader event.
I asked to speak to the manager and was told they were not in at the moment.
I will be calling tomorrow.
-
I wasn't even aware of how rampant Pinktober was until I went to Bed Bath & Beyond the other day. Pink ribbon travel mugs at the register. As if these cups would be as helpful as an early detection mammogram. Blech.
-
I am just waiting for someone to ask me for a donation...I may be snarky and say "no I am not interested as I already donated both breasts."
-
I can't wait until this month is over. I was in Panera's - pink bagels.
I thought I was in the minority with the pink hating - I put a lengthy note on facebook about how much I detest this month and I think I may havce offended some of my breast cancer friends. But is it REALLY necessary to plaster the entire world in pink to remind women to do a self exam or have a mammo? Really. Our local A&P looked like someone dumped Pepto Bismol all over everything in the store.
My stand is that it IS exploitation -it's a politically correct move on the part of the companies -meanwhile, they are paying their marketing and packaging folks to design all new containers, ads, blah blah and they are reaping a profit. Because most people will opt for the yogurt with the pink lid rather than that without - it IS a marketing ploy. And they ARE profiting off the shirts, key chains, etc etc.
Yup - totally tired of it and we're only 5 days into October.....meanwhile we still have no cure..we're faced with mostly the same medications we had 30 years ago......it sure doesn't benefit those of us drowning in bills. I applied to a breast cancer charity fund to help pay my BC bills - and while I was told that I do qualify, they were "sorry, but there are no funds left". Hm..interesting.
I know some of the ladies on the stage IV board were asking some serious questions about where the $ goes. Someone quoted that only 19% of the Susan Komen funds go for research - 40% to "awareness". Not sure where the rest of it goes and when they were asking, it seemed that none of the stores or companies really knew either.
I love that 'donated the breasts" by the way - going to remember that next time I get asked at the supermarket checkout line to donate $1.
-
Oh, and in light of this, I sincerely apologize for the "pinkness" of my avatar - it was not intention- my teenage daughter was just having fun taking my pix in a pair of 1930's gloves and hat I had.
-
I am sooo glad to have found this thread!!! Honestly, before I was diagnosed a year ago, pink was my favorite color, now I'm definitely mulling over a new signature color for myself! I understand that the gist of this is so raise "awareness", but most of us are very much aware that breast cancer exists, and for me the onslaught of pink ribbons and merchandise proves nothing more than financial gain for the companies using pink to endorse their products and increase sales. While a percentage supposedly goes for cancer research, there's still plenty of money that's being made under the guise of "for the cure" sales tactics. October for me is the beginning of Fall, a time of Harvest, Halloween, and a seguay into Thanksgiving and Christmas, my two favorite holidays of the year. Retailers can pink all they want, but I say bring on the candy corn, pick some apples, and watch the leaves change into the brilliant colors of the season! And mdg, I'm stealing your snarky response
-
Thanks for those wonderfully hilarious images, mdg (funny only so long as one forgets to be outraged, that is). "Print for the Cure????"
Otter - the only thing I like about Sarah Palin is that she introduced me to the saying "Say it ain't so!" Pink trash cans.....I think they got the pink on the wrong side - it should be IN the trash, not decorating it.
Thanks for the laughs, everyone.
I wish Saturday Night Live did a skit on this.
-
OK....here are some other pink things....
http://whipitoutcomedy.com/2009/09/30/15-strangest-breast-cancer-awareness-products/
Check out #6.....OMG! Really? Seriously? Can you imagine telling someone at the check out "I bought this to support the cure"??? LMAO!
-
LOL - excellent - my favorite was the one where you ask the mugger to be aware as you pink srapy him!
-
I am nearly five years out from the end of chemo, and all the pink stuff still irritates me and depresses me.
October use to be one of my favorite months. Now I dread it.
Lat Saturday, 10/1, I went to a marching band competition and decided to wear a new pair of hot pink shorts with a pale pink tee shirt. As I came out of the stands at intermission, a woman looked and me and gushed, "How nice!!! You dressed in pink for breast cancer awareness."
She is lucky to still be alive...
-
I've missed a few days - scary to see what everyone's finding. We got a press release today from Music & Arts about their Shop Pink promotion (at least they have the balls to call it what it is). I can't seem to copy and paste the photos, but here's a link.
www.musicarts.com/Special-Promotion.mac
I'm not sure whether the pink flute case or pink violin bow are the most nauseating. Perhaps I could buy one for my concert Sunday...
Still haven't written that article yet. Life, work and the job of scheduling surgery taking too darn much time. But I hope to soon.
-
I do think the pink garbage totes are appropriate. Cancer is garbage. I got a flyer for "Bingo for Boobs." I think that is terrible.
-
Oh - I missed the neon pink electric guitar strings. Sigh.....
