2 yrs on disability, now qualify for Medicare - but what plan???

Options

I'm on disability since Oct 2009, and now qualify for Medicare. AARP sent me a bunch of reading material about supplemental insurance, but I have no clue which one I should get. Is there a place I can go and meet with someone, or at least call, before I make a decision. Right now I have health insurance through my husbands employer, which cost him over $17,000 a year for the 2 of us.
I would think medicare with supplement would probably be less expensive. The info from AARP does not include any premium quotes either.

I appreciate your input,
Helmie

Helmie - you need to look at what's available in your specific state (Florida, I assume).  Not every "supplemental" carrier issues policies in every state.  I had to figure this out when I set up supplemental insurance for my mom.  I did end up going with AARP Secure Horizons through United Health Care for her.  The premiums were the lowest (and that included prescription coverage) but the co-pays were a little higher.  You will need to do a comparison as each plan has its nuances.  Open enrollment is about to commence, so you should be able to get the most current information available.  You might check out a local senior center - they tend to have resources to help walk someone through the process and actually make a couple of recommendations based on your specific needs.

I agree that a senior center is a good way to go. Some counties have senior resource agencies as well. Those are good places to start.

check medicare.gov -- lots of info there.

Medicare A&B plus supplement runs me about $250 per month to get the most comprehensive plan F which for me has meant NO additional co-pays or deductibles except for prescription costs. (And I've had two MRI's and a trip to the ER for a dislocated shoulder since I got on Medicare last year.)

Medicare C - Medicare Advantage plans include prescription coverage but may have co-pays and may restrict your choice of providers.

Your state should have an agency to go over medicare choices with you.
