Good choice today was carrot curried soup.  16oz, warm and wonderful on a cruddy rainy Monday afternoon.

No, I did not make the soup.  My work cafe did. :)

And thank you kindly for the warm compliment.

Sagina- Woops, forgot you were vegan.  Sorry!

Corrine- Yum yum yum. Carrot soup is an excellent idea for this week.  I'm going to start out tonight though, with grilled sweet potato and baby eggplant, roasted brussel sprouts and leaks and a romaine salad.  The veggie chili was so good, but not so good for our, um,  air quality (ew, gross!)

SAB~ no problem, sometimes I seem to forget too! lol.

I made quinoa again (my new friend) with green and golden zucchini, onion, fresh garlic, olive oil, red peppers, garnished with kalamata olives and parsley.

Oh, I will have to try this quinoa recipe.  Do you serve it hot or cold?  I posted it somewhere here, but at work they have a wonderful cold cranberry and mint quinoa salad.

Today I got a 1/2 a veggie wrap, shredded carrots and brocolli and fruit cup on the side.  Tonight I think I will be eating my leftovers from Sunday--baby eggplant stuffed with roasted veggies and I put a little side of brown rice with this.

Hot for me.  My sis in law uses it cold on top of her green salads.

My good food choice today-I met a friend at a favorite breakfast joint and instead of my usual hash and eggs I ordered fruit with whole wheat toast (OK I did let them butter the toast.)

Last night I made a fennel bulb, apple and raddichio salad with lemon.  It was pretty good.

Were you a vegan/vegetarian before cancer?  I have been eating some fish, eggs and organic poultry but pretty limited (a few times a month).  I haven't had any red meat or pork since my BMX.  I don't crave it either anymore.  I even made bacon for the kids last week and I didn't sneak a piece.  I still love the smell of frying bacon or grilled burgers though. :)

Hi everyone, I make the quinoa and usually eat it hot, but it makes so much I refrig the rest and make a cold salad the next day.  Yesterday I re-heated it, adding just a little veggie stock and it held up perfectly.

As for me, I was not a vegan (AT ALL) before cancer, heck I live in Texas and the "V" word is about a bad word! lol.  after chemo I visited with the nutritionist at the oncology center - she has I dunno 3 masters and a Phd??  Any way, it was through her explanations of what the animal proteins can do to the cells (speeding up the growing process) and how a plant based diet can slow it down in a good way - that's when I stopped trying to eat animal protein.

the meats and fish were easier to give up then the cheese, eggs, milk, and everything that is made with them.

Balancing the diet out the right way is what I am finding the hardest...still working on that.

So my good food choice for breakfast today - whole foods refried beans with green chili and lime,  added some salsa and cilantro - heated it up, spread it on two small corn tortillas - bean rolls I think they are called.....

It is startling how many Oncs don't discuss diet.  Diet has been so overlooked as an important part of our recovery.  Probably because the Pharmas can't make money from veggies! Anyway, I am becoming more and more plant based after reading Anti-cancer and watching the movie Forks Over Knives. ( Sorry if I'm repeating myself.)  It has been a hard process, and I'm still eating some animal protein throughout my radiation just for that cell regeneration Sagina wrote about.  Eating very little chicken, no beef, pork or fish. No cheese. No "white foods."  Keeping egg whites I think.

Well as usual reading your posts have made me hungry.  It's New Year for me, so Happy New Year to everyone!  I am making that carrot soup, with Kashi and veggies, a green salad and a piece of salmon for my DH.  Oh and a splurge...apples and honey for dessert to ensure a sweet new year!

SAB~ you just started this journey in June? what phase of treatment are you in?

tonight I was soooo bad......but I was tired and that's my excuse, sorry excuse!  White pasta with marinara sauce - the brand I buy is all natural and no added sugar - so that was good.

Sagina- dx June 2, surgery July 12, rads delayed until September 6 due to infection, currently on #17 out of 33 rads.  Seeing MO tomorrow--will likely begin tamoxifen in very near future (I think I should, given the delay in rads.)  Is that fast?  It seems like forever to me.

I read that if you have to use white pasta cook it al dente to reduce bad stuff (OK, I'm too tired to look up "bad stuff.")

To bed with me.  Rads at 8am, MO at 11.  I was feeling bad about starting my New Year out in the doctor's office, but decided that it was a fighting start Smile to the year. Best to all of you.

um, don't cringe bet they tasted GOOOOODDDDD.

Today I went to a lunch seminar, didn't think I was going to eat....surprise to me they had a HUGE salad, nice greens, tomatoes, mushrooms, and an olive oil dressings.  Had that with some fresh fruit - I skipped the cantaloupe though, we have one case here now of listeria from cantaloupe.

I went to a restaurant in NYC and got four sides - kale, baby bok choy, mushrooms, and quinoa with mango and pineapple.  AND I had a juice with broccoli, kale, spinach, pineapple, and green apple.  Oh HELL TO THE YES!

SAB how fast after surgery did you start rads?  I was dx Oct 13, 2010, first chemo November 1, surgery March 13, rads started in May ended June 6th, 2011.  Lumpectomy so no more surgeries, triple negative so no more meds.... When I started chemo I couldn't see the end of treatment ever coming, after my last rads, I realized how quickly it went by.  Thankfully the hair is growing quickly, that helps.

Hope your infection heals quickly and you are able to continue rads and have that last treatment day soon.  My mom did tamoxifen then femara, she did well on both.  She was dx 1998 and still with us.

Today my good food choice was apple slice with peanut butter, a small muesli (spelling?) bread with raisins, and some grapes.

Sweetbean, your lunch sounds wonderful. Will definitely try the quinoa with mango and pineapple - sounds like a breakfast possibility!

Oh that quinoa side does sound delish.  On my 2nd cup of green tea today and had a big cup of "Plant Juice" that I got from Trader Joes.

Going to have a big bowl of veggie soup today. Going to an amusement park tonight and don't think that I will be able to eat anything there that is healthy.  I will look for a place that offers salads and fruit cups, but if salads aren't there, I will try to fill up on fruit and have a slice of cheese pizza.  I was hoping that somewhere they would have a veggie burger offering, but not looking promising.

Oh, a few days ago we went out to dinner--great place in Chicago M Henrietta if anyone is visiting the Windy City.  Lots of veggie/vegan options.  I had a nut loaf (brown rice, nuts, herbs, spices), steamed kale and smashed rutabagas.  Delish meal.  Recipe here if anyone is interested.  I will remove the sunflower seeds when I make at home:

mmm, rutabagas, a new veggie for me to try, what does it taste like?

It has the color and consistency of mashed potatoes, but a little sweeter. It also has that veggie gravy on it, so it was pretty good.

I realized that you know when you diet/tastebuds have changed when the first thing I ate was the greens.  Followed by the roasted tomato, rutabagas and the nut loaf was last.

Sweetbean-Thank you!  I wish everyone a healthy and happy year ahead.

Sagina-I guess it was almost 2 months between surgery and rads.  No chemo (oncotype 15.)  I finished treatment 19 today, so 14 more...3 weeks. I picked up my Tamoxifen today, but have been reading posts that convince me to wait until rads are done before I start. Some people's MOs are telling them that slowing cell regeneration, especially any abnormal cell growth, would work against the point of the radiation.

You guys have me back on the wagon.  Tried a new type of grain yesterday--Kasha (buckwheat.)  Pretty good.  Nutty...made it with veggies and sprinkled slivered almonds on top.

Went to the farmers market, got fresh collard greens.  They didn't look anything like in the grocery store, can't wait to try them! Also bought some fresh basil, making tomato basil sauce Sunday!

Watching the National Rugby League Grand Final (Australia) on TV and munching on a whole range of dips, biscuits, chips...... but I am trying to eat more of the grapes, carrot and celery sticks.

I have planted tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, sweetcorn, shallots, leeks, sunflowers, spinach and lots of herbs in my garden. It's so handy and self fulfilling to walk out the back door and pick a few things from the garden to complement a meal.

Oh how I love using fresh herbs. Missed the farmer's market this weekend, but did get a walk on the beach instead!

So, what is your favorite "good" food choice at a chinese restaurant?  I really struggled today when I took my college girl out to lunch.  Ended up with chinese chicken salad but guess what?  Chicken was fried.  Ugh.

I tried miso soup last week, I can say I tried it....everything seems so salty to me now at chinese places.  I have seen a "diet" plate once - steamed shrimp and steamed veggies with steamed rice.  A sauce came on the side, Hoesin??? I dunno.....

Today my good food choice was sleep!  Chrissyb from Australia was here this weekend....what a joy she is and what a blast we had!!!!

Good food choice today was dolsot bibimbap: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibimbap with no meat.  Basically big bowl veggies and rice with spicy red sauce that you put on top.  Also had some dried seaweed and diakon and a 2 cups of green tea.

Hi Corinne~ I've up my intake of green tea, I like it unsweetened and have been getting the "Honest Tea".  What is your favorite?

today for lunch I had pulled "pork" on flat bread with lettuce, tomato and olives  - a side of steamed asparagus and some celery and carrots.  I haven't tried many "fake meat" products, this one was ok....don't think it will be a repeat choice.

Sagina, I'll butt in on your question for Corinne.  Yummy green tea with Jasmine blossoms to smooth out the experience at Trader Joes.

I bought zucchini today to stuff with my leftover buckwheat pilaf and roast in oven with tomato sauce.

I have tried a few different brands of Green Tea.  I like them all, but I try to get decaf when possible.

I drink reg lipton green at work--just fine

I recently got a green tea/dragonfruit blend from Whole Foods that is really good

My sister picked me up loose leaf green tea from China during her travels, I don't like it as much as it is really strong, but this is the real stuff and I am sure the best for me.  She wouldn't tell me what she paid for it, but I got the inkling that it was pretty expensive when her hubby said that I better drink it all bc its "liquid gold".

I purchased a Tazo "Zen" green tea that I also like and a pomogrante/green tea blend from Trader Joes.

On my 3rd cup today already! :)
