underwire bras after reconstruction

Hey everyone!!   I had mastectomy with immediate reconstruction April 8th of this year.  I started to wear an underwire bra probably 2 months after my surgery.  My PS said it was fine.  I work 12 hour shifts and last night my rib right under my breast feels bruised.  I wonder if its just the effects of having implants or the underwire.  Either way, it sure is bothering me. Anyone have that lil pain in the spot?

    Hi there!

I had a lot of that achey, bruised feeling around my ribs even without an underwire; sometimes any bra at all hurt that side. My plastic surgeon told me it's normal, that all of that tissue was affected by the surgery and it is inflammation.

It's gotten better in time (my mx was Nov 15) though I still have my achey moments.

I've become a wirefree bra wearer since my BMX(2/2011). I have that occas rib pain and the thought of a wire there doesn't sound pleasant. I'm tall and lean and I know my foobs are in the right place(they look fine) but I figure since my foobs are already perky I don't need an underwire to give 'em support. I found some good bras on herroom.com

I stopped wearing bras right after my BMX-- just tank tops under all my clothes. Occasionally I wear an old nursing bra that doesn't have any wire.  The implants are already so firm and a bra just creates more constriction-- on the side where I had nodes removed I don't want anything tight that could trigger lymphadema. My only problem is the reconstructed nipple-- I always look cold!--Julie

My PS wants me to wear an underwire bra during the day and sports bras when I go to bed.  He said it keeps things in place longer.  At times I rebel and go braless.  Yes Jat, I always look cold as well.  Do those nipple coverings you can buy work without being seen under a shirt?

My PS is like Agada's, wants me in a bra 24/7. Since I was a bigger girl pre-surgery, I already wore a bra 24/7, just more comfy bras.  Right now since my reconstruction was on 9/9, he wants me in a tighter more supportive bra all the time.  He said after that, wear a bra that fits very well during the day and a sports bra at night.  He also said it helps keep things in place longer.  He also recommended getting a professional fitting and luckily my insurance pays for Nordstroms.  There was a write up recently about how good the fitters were at Nordstroms, especially for post-MX women. I'm still swollen (I had a uni-MX with a reduction on the other side), so once that goes down, I will make an appointment to see them.
