POPLITEAL CYST HAS ANYONE HAD THIS ?
![]()
Has anyone gone thru this? For the last few weeks I've been really suffering in a lot of Pain and swelling from the Popeliteal Cyst deep in the back of my knee. Initially the pain was so bad I could not stand on it at all, let alone take some steps to walk. So they gave me a leg brace to wear and gave me the choice of wearing a cane or crutches. I chose the cane. The swelling started soon after the first visit with the Ortho. He put me on 600 mg Ibuprophen and Vicodin to take as needed. I am usually a very active type person, and so I went where i needed to go with my brace and cane, even though I could't go faster than a snail, I had still been getting to the beach to sit in my sand chair by the surf for 2 or 4 hours each day. Stand around the kitchen with my cane cooking dinner for me and DH and any of the kids who stopped by. Last week the pain became so unbearable I wanted to cry. No matter what I did, keeping off my feet with my leg raised and a heating pad, No longer doing the downstairs to feed the dogs. Going downstairs was torture. Saw my Ortho again and she looked at the leg and noticed the swelling. She told me the swelling with this condition presents as a deep thrombosis blood clot in pain and symptoms, which was why I'm feeling so bad. My leg looks like a lymphadema elephant leg with no ankle, just swelling, down to my toes. And it hurts just to touch it. My calf feels like a knife was cut into it. The ortho said the pain and swelling is because the cyst had ruptured and spilled fluid into the surrounding nerves and tissues. This is supposedly normal and will get better within 6 weeks. She gave me a prescription for a leg sleeve. They said sometimes they have to go in and remove the cyst if it keeps enlarging as mine was already a size of a lime., But they don't' like to do it becuase it can be dangerous without ultrasound and florascope to be able to maneuver around the tendons and nerves and bloodvessles. So, I guess until it drains completely on it's own I'm going to be feeling like this for the rest of the weekend. I was supposed to walk for the Alzheimers' walkathon tomorrow in Point Pleasant Beach NJ. One good thing about this leg issue is that it totally took my mind off the BC.

Barb, that sounds terrible! I have never heard of it. Man, I would think I'd want it removed asap, especially if it keeps growing. 6 weeks is a long time to be in pain. Can you get a second opinion about removing it?
-
No Barb, I've never had one or even heard of it. It sounds awful. I agree, that is way too long to be in pain. I hope you feel better soon or they decide on a better option.

A more common name for it is a "Baker's Cyst". Actually the pain has lessened since yesterday, finally.

So there is no blood clot? Are you sure? Because a blood clot would cause all of these symptoms, I had one. I would want to be certain there was no blood clot in there.....you did have surgery if I am correct? I know they are saying that these symtoms mimic a blood clot, but be sure!!!! I hope you feel better soon.

Hi, Sounds like things might be getting better. Hope the pain goes away soon. I like that you can spend some time on the beach.SharonH

Thanks Jen, It's interesting about the idea of a second opinion, because I had first gone to my GP with the pain in the back of my leg and wondering if it was joint pain from the Tomoxifen. She sent me for an US because she thought it was a Bakers Cyst. But apparently the US came back negative for that or a blood clot, so I endured the discomfort during June and July, then when I got that severe pain and pop during a walk with DH a month later, I went to the emergency room and they did an MRI on the back of my Knee to rule out deep vein thrombosis. They saw a baker's cyst the size of a lime and possible meniscus tear, so they sent me to the orthopedist who confirmed the large baker cyst, which they predicted would rupture and it did and is still painful. They gave me a knee brace and a cane, 600mg of Ibuprophen, and Vicodin and told me it would begin to subside in 2 to 6 weeks. Thankfully, the swelling is going down and the pain killers are working and I'm limping less. But it has looked all week like I have lyphedema of he leg.
I love Reikki. I've never had a Reikki practioner work on me. I actually had considered going for training myself, and never did. I am a licensed esthetician, and thought Reikki would enhance my work with clients. I do believe Riekki is extremely beneficial for the health and well being of the body. I also love listening to Reikki music for relaxation.

Glad to hear the pain has gotten some better, hopefully it continues to do that.

Hi Shanagirl, Just thinking of you. How is your knee feeling? SharonH
-
Hi Sharon, Im really so frustrated because the pain has increased again and also the swelling though still taking 300mg Ibuprohen 3 x a day. So down because I want to get back to excersicing and getting the house fixed up for the fall. This is the one thing tha'ts taken my mind off of the BC issues other than the fact I won't start on the Aromasin until this knee issue resolves
