    I love grapefruit but since I have to take Simvistatin, grapefruit is not allowed.

    There is an apple orchard five minutes from our house.  They make great apple pie, although I'm ready to try Deborye's Swedish Apple Pie!  I heard it's a bumper crop this year - perfect weather for apple growin' and pickin'

    I have a crisper full of Macouns!

    Macouns are my absolute favorites. I haven't seen any in the stores yet.

    I made another dish from the book I am reading, and tonight it was corn, blackbeans, rice, and italian flavored tomatoes sauteed in olive oil. It was very good.

    Zumba- that sounds pretty good!  Can you clarify Italian flavored tomatoes?

    Ok and I am going to show more ignorance here....what the heck are Macouns?  Must be an apple but I'vve never heard of it?

    Jo- So good to see you again, Hershey kisses is right up my alley, I think i have been on this diet for awhile too LOL!

    Joyce- Pork roast sounds really good, enjoy your evening in your pjs

    Laurie- Dont feel alone i have never heard of macouns either, i know there are many varieties that i probably never have heard of. Your chimminy looks scary/ How are you and the boys feeling?

    Was in the middle of making steak sandwiches with garlic fries tonight when a friend called and wanted us all to go to dinner, i said sure why not, put away what i started, had fried clams tonight and they were tough, first time i got a bad meal at this place we go to.

    Debbie- I admire the fact that you put the stuff you were cooking away and headed out with friends.  I am anal and would have said we had to take a rain check as I had already started dinner.  Sorry you got a crappy meal.

    Joyce-I hope your husband has another great dinner waiting for you too!  Hope your day at work goes well!

    This cold is dropping into our chests.  I had been hoping that we might get outside and go to a park today and meet friends but, the weather doesn't look like it's going to cooperate and we really shouldn't spread our germs.  My almost 4 year old was up coughing most of the  night.  I probably got about three hours of sleep the whole night between feeling crappy and helping the boys deal with their own issues.  So I am looking forward to nap time!  Hoping this thing passes quickly.

    Hope everyone slept good and has a great day lined up!

    Laurie - time to stock up on Mucinex!  Hope you and the kids feel better soon and get some rest.  It is nice and sunny this morning.

    OK, well I've only seen Macouns here in NH, hadn't eaten one in more than 20 years.  This apple orchards has a few varieties that I had never heard of...the first batch we got were Mollies!

    It's a cross-breed from a Macintosh and Jersey Black.  The flesh is a snowy white sometimes tinged with green, fine-grained, juicy, and very crisp. Macoun tastes wonderful--a nice
    sweet-tart balance with hints of strawberries, plus spice and floral notes.

    The Mollie is another cross-breed that includes lines from the Gravenstein and Golden Delicious.  Tasting notes:  Crisp creamy-yellow flesh, more coarse-grained than not, delivers a mild flavor
    that is sweet but not cloying, with a hint of lemonade. This satisfying apple went down very easy. The very start of the first few bites hints at a bit more complexity--berries perhaps? but this impression is quickly overwhelmed by the sweetness.

    My next trip I will pick up Honey Crisps - really, really like those and we were able to get them in the Midwest. 

    Debbie - I've had way too many tough clams in my life.  Now when I order them, I specifically ask that they not be over-breaded and over-fried.  So many places cook fish and seafood to death!

    We did go out for pizza last night, so now there are more leftovers in the fridge.  We'll be eating a smorgasbord for lunch today!

    I have my appointment with the radiation oncologist this afternoon.  Should be interesting.  I am not convinced that this local RO office will have experience with someone who has already been radiated with Mammosite.  But we'll see...

    Laurie  sooo sorry you guys are going thru this:(  rest and drink tons of liquids, till you think you will float away.

    chicken and rice:  I used drumbsticks and thighs and seasoned with salt, pepper, paprika,and cooked on both sides  in deep fry pan till golden on both sides, added some saffron flavored rice, the water (chicken stock would be good) and some frozen peas put the lid on and simmer till rice is done and chicken is fully cooked. MY DH had such a fit, cause he really doesnt like dark meat chicken but I noticed he had seconds.

    Jo 5  i like the sounds of that diet, I always keep some chocolate in the fridge for those urges!

    Supposed to be gorgeous here today, going to marina tiki bar to celebrate BIL birthday, dinner willl just be hor derves (sp) and cupcakes.....LOL sounds kinda like jo 5;s diet.

    zumbagirl  I use those canned tomatos in everything   very little calories and already seasoned, they are great added to spanish rice, but my favorite is just plain elbow pasta with the tomatos yummm

    i absolutely adore grapefruit - but can't eat it at the moment because of meds.

    tonite/.. minestrone with ww garlic bread and maybe salad.  I still am not driving (since my seizure) and this older lady picks me up and takes me to rehearsals on Wednesday so I invite her to dinner.

    I am so much safer when driving myself but OH well.

    Michelle- Being inspired by your DH I am going to make homemade chicken tenders tonight.  Going to serve it with left over cheese and rice and corn on the cob.  With the kids being sick they have hardly eaten at all in three days.  I am hoping the chicken tenders help them find their appetite.  I am making dinner as kid friendly as possible.

    Apple- I think your dinner sounds great!

    Joyce- It is foggy here too. makes me want to lay in bed all day but have errands to run.

    Laurie- Sometimes i take a raincheck but these people are such a riot, Diane is caucasion and 57 but George (her husband) is African american and hes 92 we met them about 6 months ago while listining to our friend brett sing, george got up to sing and the looks on everyones faces when he sang was unbelievable they always give him standing ovations, hes a great singer, he also has made a couple of movies, but he is so awesome and me and chuck really love these guys, couldnt pass up a fun night with them, we call them our "Old friends" they make us feel young LOL!  Not a good sign when it gets in your lungs, as michelle says take some musinex it does help.

    Apple- minestrone soup sounds really good right now, its that time of year!

    Carrie- Happy birthday to your DH bil- your dinner sounds great, my dh dosnt care for dark meat either but i sneak it in now and again, more flavor!

    Michelle-You made my mouth water with your descriptions of the apples, you described it like a "Fine wine" Thanks!- Good luck today with Rads, hope you are feeling good and getting some rest

    SWEDISH APPLE PIE
    FILL PIE PLATE ¾ FULL OF APPLES OF YOUR CHOICE
    1 TB SUGAR
    1 TSP CINNAMON
    MIX TOGETHER AND SPRINKLE OVER APPLES/SOMETIMES I ADD MORE
    MELT ¾ CUP BUTTER 1 & ½ STICKS
    1C SUGAR
    1C FLOUR
    1 EGG
    1/2C CHOPPED NUTS OPTIONAL
    POUR OVER TOP, WILL BE THICK, BUT WILL SPREAD WHILE BAKING
    BAKE @ 350 FOR ABOUT 45 MINUTES.

    Deborye - that looks yummy!  I will be making it this week!

    Debbie - that was a mighty fine cut and paste job that I did with those apple descriptions...lol!   I just eat them, not analyze them...although once I saw these descriptions and thought about the apples, I did kinda get it!

    Laurie - hope the kiddies liked the chicken tenders! 

    My radiation oncology appointment was...long!  He was running an hour late, and then he spent an hour with us. I had LOTS of questions, and really put him to the test.  He wants me to have a PET/CT scan which will be scheduled for sometime during the week after next (last chemo).  And he totally agreed that mine is a complicated situation and I should get a second opinion from Dana Farber.  So his office will work with the local DF folks to make sure it gets scheduled. He said that I could have chest wall radiation because the mastectomy removed the tissue that had already been radiated.  I asked about "splashover"... you can't tell me that those little radioactive seeds didn't leak radiation out of that balloon and into other areas of my chest cavity!  I know my esophagus was affected for two weeks.  And oh, let's not even talk about the chances of SEs like a 1 in 3 chance that rads will kill my thyroid.  And then there is Kara Kennedy, who died a few days ago at the age of 51 after being treated for lung cancer 9 years ago.  Her "heart gave out" - that is what the family said.  And tonight's news reported on her death and cardiac toxicity due to chemo and radiation, and a new oncology specialty called cardioncology!!!  There's more but I'll spare you, or you can read my blog later and I'll have more details there.  Like the first DF oncologist told me, the radiation will be complicated.

    So when we got back, we took advantage of the absolutely beautiful weather here today and took a boat ride...about 1 1/2 hours or so! It was so relaxing and there are so few boats out on the lake these days. Our little electric motor just quietly trolled the shoreline and we enjoyed every minute.

    Leftovers for dinner tonight.  Oh yes, we did stop for ice cream after the RO appointment. I'm not sure there will be very many more days this year as nice as today!

    I use Splenda and less then what it calls for sugar.

    You read my mind - I will use 1 Tablespoon of brown sugar for the apples and Splenda for the topping.  I love the richness of brown sugar, and that little bit will be ok.

    Michelle- that is so scary to me.  I'm sooo- sorry your appointment went so long but even more sorry that you are having to try to figure all of this out.  Another moment where I am left shaking my head in disbelief at what women have to endure to fight this bastard disease.  (Sorry for the language.)

    The chicken tenders came out awesome.  I did the recipe onthe back of the Bisquick box, only I fired the tenders lightly before baking and they were yummmmmy!  I always know I did a good job with dinner when my husband complains after, for at least an hour, that he ate too much!  lol!!  The boys each ate two and their corn which is more than they have eaten in the three days.  They wouldn't even eat their grilled cheeses at lunch today.  I felt so bad for them, today seemed worse than yesterday for them.  I go back and forth.  But they seemed on the upside of it before bedtime.  A lot less coughing and being a little silly instead of laying around.

    Deborye- You are a better person then I to substitute!  I pour the sugar in :D

    All of a sudden I thought it was a cooking show, they use that expression all the time...lol!  Glad your chicken tenders were a hit. 

    As for the rads, the ultimate insult is that they tattoo markers all over you -yup, permanent tattoos.  I think I am going to negotiate for a sharpie and tape... I have visions of about 20 tatts with all the areas he wants to blast.  If I agree to all this, he can be flexible...LOL!!!

    Lauriek, that picture is scarey!   I have never seen lightning damage like that before.  Hope things are all fixed now.

    Had a rads simulation on Monday.  They gave me 5 tattoos.  They told me it would look like a freckle, but it's black.  Who ever heard of a black freckle?  Looks more like a black head.  They are doing another simulation in 2 weeks and going to put a few more tattoos on they said.  I probably should have asked for sharpie and tape too.

    Had flounder for dinner tonight with some broccoli and a spinach and tomato salad.  Was supposed to try some mashed turnips, but they weren't cooked and had to go to back to school night, so had to throw them away.  Disappointed about that.  Was really looking forward to trying them.  Oh, well, still have a few more to try tomorrow.

    We have an apple orchard near our house too that sells really delicious pies. Our favorite is apple caramel walnut.  Really good.   So many varieties of apples to choose from too.  Right now my favorite is the pink ladies.

    Michelle- 20?  Holy Moly.  My Mom had rads a few times and I remember her tattoos, that they were the size of a pin head- very small.  But that was also, a few years ago and allof hers were on her trunk where they really, would never be exposed.  Although now that I am thinking about it, she had WBR and I don't even remember those tats. Thankfully he's flexable- but still wow.

    Oh I don't know how flexible he is.  But I may say, use a Sharpie or I'm outta here, he may become flexible...LOL!  There is no reason for tattoos.  Many places use a Sharpie, so ya know it works!

    Got my tattoos a year ago in July - 5 of them.  Four have faded out, the only one I can find is the lowest, looks like a blue-gray pinprick.

    Michelle  I also have tattoos  3 of them  the one in the middle of my chest is so small that i cant even find it  then I have them on ea side under my arms and they are low under bra line or bathing suit,  no one notices them as they are tiny pin point marks.  i do know they can use the perm markers though and put a peice of duo derm over them so you can shower.  Good luck through this process, lots easier than chemo, just busier, as I had to go every day for 5 weeks.

    That apple pie recipe sounds amazing.  what is the recommended apple to use that will hold up and keep its shape and not turn to applesauce?

    Carrie - he's talking about 7 weeks, and with 4 separate areas to target including my supra-clavicle area so there would be some on my neck, I am estimating the number of tattoos.  Yea, I realize I'm the only one that would notice...it's just that it's not necessary and I sure as heck don't need another permanent reminder.  I guess it's the little things...

    My favorite apple for cooking is definitely a Granny Smith.  Just the right tart/sweet and the ability to hold its shape.  Cortlands are good but are not always available.  The MacIntosh/Macoun varieties are better for applesauce.
