    We are. Grouper, Brussel sprouts and wild rice

    for dinner last night. Green tea and fruit for lunch today.

    This seems like a good place to ask a food question.  I just discovered sugar peas as a snack.  Has anyone heard anything bad about Pam butter flavored spray.  OMG if you put sugar peas in the microwave and steam them for a few minutes than spray with Pam butter flavor and sprinkle some sea salt on them they are delicious and basically no calories.

    Since they are so good I was curious if anyone knew if it was bad to be spraying them with Pam.

    What kind of oil is in the Pam spray?  I know that Pam makes an Olive Oil spray that might be better to use than say, corn oil.

    SAB; simple great recipe for beets:

    roast, peel off skins, slice.

    Put in a bowl with walnuts and crumbled goat cheese. Splash of balsamic and a couple cranks of black pepper.

    Delish!

    It is the sam Pam can as the one like olive oil but is butter flavored.  It takes like real butter but has zero calories and zero fat.  It really taste like butter and makes blah food (healthy stuff) taste great.

    I am just a little skeptical that something that taste this good must have a down side.  I am actually carrying a can in my purse.  Order steamed veggies at a restaurant and discretely take out the can and add some flavor.

    Hi everyone! I just found this thread....I've been trying to go at this alone.....I changed to a vegan diet after consulting with the nutritionist at the oncologist's clinic.

    ~Livinglarge I've never tried Pam spray, but I sooo miss the velvet butter taste dancing in my mouth!

    Today for lunch I had chopped up bell pepper stuffed in a portabella, with spinach salad with grapefruit and avocado.

    I will say this - many years ago I had a friend who was an engineer. He worked at the company that made Butter Flavored Crisco. He said that seeing what was involved in that butter flavor, he would NEVER EVER eat that product.  I never forgot that.

    I bet if you tried the olive oil spray you might like it. I am just very suspicious of those artificial flavors.

    You know what also makes healthy food taste great?  More healthy food.  Seriously.  Don't use the Pam or any oil (except olive oil) for 1 week.  Your tastebuds will change and you won't miss it.

    Changing my diet, I don't crave red meat or pork at all any more. I want veggies and fruits.  Smoothies are even better.  I feel guilty when I eat sweets or white foods...which helps the next time around to *not* eat it.  Or at least say "I had mashed potatoes this week...I shouldn't have that again for at least a month"...

    Oh...and if you are looking to add flavor--exchange the can of Pam in your purse for a shaker of tumeric.  Lots of flavor and the a powerful anti-inflammatory food.

    Tumeric = yum. Never thought to sprinkle it on food. Will definitely do so!

    I will give it a try.  I just discovered the Pam a week ago.  I eat veggies all the time and fruits basically my only snack.  I workout all the time and I am a very picky eater.  I think the Pam just gave me a new flavor.  Every once in awhile it is a nice break to introduce something new.

    Thanks and will post back once I have a chance to try the Tumeric.

    livinglarge-I just don't know.  Read the ingredients carefully.  What do they use as a propellent?  How many artificial things are in it?  Rule of thumb: Reduce corn, soy and sunflower oils, anything hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated. Corinne is right, you do lose your taste for artificial or refined foods after a bit, but I sure do miss my sugar!  Sigh.

    Just found this thread. I have traded in commerical salad dressing (I used to use Paul Newman's Family Italian). We have salad & raw veggies & berries with dinner every night — so now I only use fresh lemon juice, a little salt and fresh cracked pepper. It's delish. And I don't miss the oil! Gotta say a sprinkle of salt is KEY.

    Rennasus, I held the line up at Fresh Choice today reading all the dressing ingredients--my good choice today was a balsamic made with olive oil on a big salad, 2 slices of sourdough baguette (Servan-Schreiber approves of limited amounts) with roasted garlic, a baked yam with nothing on it, and honeydew melon for dessert. Phew, made it out of there without ice cream or brownies!

    Amyis strong, make sure you use black pepper when you use turmeric, it aids in absorbtion of the curcumin.  I now keep a shaker of half turmeric/half pepper on the table after reading the idea in (this?) a thread.

    I stayed at a lighthouse overnight with friends so they brought good food last night  :)  My kitchen is the size of a closet (really) so I make a lot of things in the crockpot.  Tomorrow for daughter and myself barley and mushroom soup with sherry in crockpot, caesar salad, fresh bread.

    I started the day at the big farmers market in the middle of my big city.  I've joined a community supported agriculture program with a local farmer - love her and her veggies - my $10 bag had green and golden zucchini, squash, shallots, tomatoes, onion....and I bought my pound of fresh mushrooms, and my new favorite aquaponic lettuce....it's so tender.....I grabbed a bag of spinach too - so I prepaid my CSA so $10 plus $5 for mushrooms (vitamin D i had no idea), $3 for spinach, and $4 for lettuce, not to bad for $22, opps and my okra, purple and green (baby size which microwaves beautifully) for $3 more.

    for a light dinner tonight I had two pieces of whole wheat bread with avocado and tomato (my DH calls it my summer sandwich..)

    They sell sunflower sprouts, purslane, and lambs quarter there too.  Looking for ideas for those other than put on salad.

    If necessity is the key to invention then who ever invented "smoked paprika" was a vegan looking for a meaty flavor!!!

    So jealous of you ladies that live in warm weather areas.   I am in the Midwest and our farmers markets wrap up in October.   I am doing a CSA next year though for May-Oct.  Love the idea of having all of that fresh produce from the farm.

    Good food choice today was scrambled organic eggs with shiitake mushrooms, pressed garlic and diced home grown tomato (the last of the 3 that I have), sprinkled with a little tumeric and a few cranks of black pepper.  Also had a handful of purple organic grapes and 2 slices of Ezekiel bread.  Yum!

    Sagina, that all sounds sooo good!

    My good food choice last night was a whole wheat tortilla filled with omega 3 egg whites, black beans, brown rice, avocado and home made salsa.  OK, I cheated and put a little white cheddar in in too Smile... 

    For today, whole wheat pasta with sauteed tomatoes, garlic and fresh basil.

    breakfast is the hardest on a vegan diet - I just can't get into the fake sausages etc and I need help with making oatmeal better - trying no sugar and I really don't like suger subs.....so I guess it's gonna be corn tortilla, beans, and avocado...

    I can see breakfast being the toughest.  There is only so much oatmeal and toast one can eat.  What about smoothies in the morning?  They are really filling?  Strawberry/banana or 3 berry smoothie and a couple pcs of Ezikiel bread?

    Good choices last night were whole wheat pasta with tomato/basil sauce and quorn brand meatless meatballs.  I thought they were okay.  The kids didn't dig these at all.

    Good choice this morning was a banana&mango smoothie.  Lunch will be stir fried veggies and brown rice.

    Had chicken last night.  Tummy didn't like it so much any more.

    Breakfast is very tough...how about a whole grain flatbread or crackerbread (I use WASA) with peanut butter and bananas (or other fruit) and a nice cup of green tea?

    both great suggestions! I like the wasa cracker thingys, and peanut butter is a good protein and fat for me.  Ever since Rads sleep is not as good....so mornings are limited to get ready and get out door - if it wasn't for work, I'd probably be a night owl and sleep from exhaustion during the day. falling asleep is easy, it's the ouch and ouch from moving at night, rolling on the radiated area etc. 

    I have been juicing, and tried that for breakfast, but really leaves me hungry, so maybe I can supplement the peanut butter and cracker with that.

    Oh Sagina, fogot to say...if you don't like to put fruit in your oatmeal try (instead of sugar) to put a drop of vanilla or other extract to flavor it. Sometimes I use a drop of evaporated milk, but I'm not vegan.

    How about a pan toasted almond butter sandwich made with Ezekiel bread, served with a side of fried banana slices browned in grapeseed oil. An extra cup of green tea with this one is good as the sandwich is dry until you pile a little bite of banana on it right before taking a bite.

    Ooooooooo, sounds yummy, I do use unsweetened almond milk - it never occurred to me to put in it in my oatmeal - duh! I haven't ever had a fried banana - and grapeseed oil is that a regular grocery item or whole foods kind of thing?

    I'm going to whole foods today to pick up stuff to make lunches here at work.  Do you all know of any other "I didn't think of that" protein? I'm all black beaned out....I try to add some kind of legume to my salads, and I just can't get around the textures of the "soy" meats.

    Try the meatless/soyless Quorn brand items.  They are frozen, but you could grill up and slice up one of the "chicken" cuts for your salads.

    Hooray, Costco has started carrying organics!  Maybe it will start a wave of lower organic prices (OK, I'm an optimist.)  Anyway, they did have grapeseed oil, organic olive oil, quinoa and lovely organic berries. 

    Proteins are so tough.  Do you eat soy yogurt?  Quinoa?  I make a quinoa pilaf and then use it to stuff peppers sometimes.  You can pop some edamame or nuts in there to boost the protein.
