Welcome, crazydaisy!  Glad you've found us!  You may have read it here or elsewhere already, but there seems to be a significant connection between exercise and bc risk reduction, and that's what motivated me to get started and keeps me going.  As someone once told us, "Every step is a step away from breast cancer."  And thanks for the info on nightshade veggies -- which I just read after a dinner that included potatoes and tomatoes!  Now that I know about that, I'll have to pay attention and see if I notice any increased pain.  And temps in the low 20s already?  You must live waaaay far north!

Survivor, lucky you, seeing a Bocelli concert!!!  I'm envious!

And Spring, I can't believe there isn't an Oncology ND in NC!  That's strange.  Is there maybe one in NJ or somewhere else you occasionally go?  I'll have to check that list to see how many there are in CA.  Maybe they're more rare than I realized.

Have a great weekend, everyone!    Deanna

Thanks for the welcome Survivourwoman and Deanna!

Speaking of appointment time of year......yea, my docs office actually called home twice this week! Bet you can guess what thats for!! Ahhhh, guess I better call back first thing after the weekend. Actually I am amazed they called, I was testing them out to see if they would to notify me it's that time of year! Yippee (not really) but at least that means they are doing thier job, I was putting of having to do it myself just to see if they were on the ball!

Well ladies, the most excerise I have gotten this summer is kayaking when I am at the cottage. Can't say it's a real workout since I'm sitting down but, it has been good for upper body and breathing. The winter months are what really drag me down so I need to find something to do!

Deanna, oh ya, really cold today and last nite, near frost overnite. LOL, way north is south central Ontario Canada so yes, from where you are in the sunny south I am way north! Time to hunt down the warmer jackets and sweaters, maybe even the flannel sheets!

    Have a great weekend ladies!

Hi CrazyDaisy--yep, it is cold here in NY, too. My tears were coming out yesterday when I was riding my bike to work. My makeup was all washed away. :)

My coworker is doing a two months workout program with Ray Cardiello (he is a celebrity trainer, but really down to earth guy). Anyway, his workout called the 4by4 workout b/c all you need is a tiny space seems really great. Here is the video :part 1 and 2. The girl who is a trainer herself is sweating half way through it. Talk later... I am running to work now.

Harley, well, sombody needs to be a size 2!! I'm 5'8"; if I was a size 2 I'd look sort of like Olive Oil!! ha! I can get into size 8 dress pants, and I think that's about the size I am supposed to be! :) I was always "tall" for my age, grew soon, it was a rough adolesence! I was my adult height in 7th grade. anyway!!!

Well today was something totally different for exercise I did the Ovarian Cancer Wellnes walk with other ladies from church to support a woman we know fighting it. It was a 2 mile walk. I felt it in my lower back! I think I am out of "walking shape". My lower back is used to being bent over a bike I guess?? I've never done a breast cancer walk -- maybe hits too close to home, and also, I've never found one I felt I could totally get behind. I don't support mammograms as I was faithful yearly and was totally failed, - had a clear mammo in may and was dx'd in July with a huge mass. I don't know all the politics in Ovarian, so it was easy to just be in the moment and focus on the support we were giving a friend. I guess that's what it's all about anyway.

    Spring,

    Well, I wear a size 4 jeans...

I understand about not wanting to get involved in all the politics surrounding breast cancer groups.

Last year, I did the American Cancer Society breast cancer walk, MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER.  My thought process was that by doing this walk, the money I raised STAYS in MY area....

Ovarian cancer scares me, because there are sometimes NO SYMPTOMS, til it's too late...  But I guess some breast cancer is like that, too.

I don't trust mammo grams either...  I found my lump, and previous mammogram DIDN'T...

Thanks for the videos Survivour!! Will try out when no one is home!

Spring, my friend walks in the Ovarian Cancer walk every year, her mum died from it, I think I will walk with her next time.

    Harley.....size 4??? Gee I haven't been size 4 since I was in 5th grade!

Had a sweet and sad weekend. The sweet part was visiting friends on the lake, it was so beautiful and so refreshing to soak up some sun by the water and go for a fantastic boat ride followed by dinner out on the deck while watching a spectacular sunset.

The sad part, On our way to the lake I recieved and e-mail from a dear friend who's 27yr old daughter has just been diagnosed with cervical cancer. Her exact stage has not yet been confirmed but they are putting her at a stage 3. This has all come up so fast! The poor girl has been losing tremendous amounts of bllod and has recieved 3 blood transfushions between last thursday to friday pm. They plan to start her on aggressive chemo and radiation this tuesday. She has told her mom and dad that if it is not Gods will for her to live that she will live with him. I just can't imagine what this family is going thru right now fighting for thier daughters life who also has a 4 yr old son. It broke my heart, I could hardly read it. Please say a prayer for this young woman Amanda and her family.

Survivorwoman, I'm assuming the trial allows for crossover to another arm if your arm of the trial is closed early?

Not the news you needed, Survivor, but thank goodness they found out and are doing something about it.  There must have been some real promise to the drug, so hopefully, you've gotten some good benefit from it, in spite of this decision.

I know you'll keep us posted. Maybe it will all turn out for the best -- like maybe you'll now get Herceptin on top of the Tykerb, and maybe the combination in that order will prove to be extraordinarily effective.

    Survivor,

I agree with Deanna.  Sorry you will have to stop taking the Tykerb.  These studies usually find that even if the drug doesn't help EVERYONE, there are some women who they DO help!

Maybe Herceptin will work just as well, if not BETTER than Tykerb alone...

    Survivor, I am sorry. Breathe.

Viv, I can't even imagine! I know my husband's sister was dx'd with breast cancer at 27 and passed at 35. It is a hard thing for a family to go through. That was almost 20 years ago and there is still "stuff", esp. for his parents.

Cycled today! Perfect weather. Started out a bit chilly, but we got warmed up after about 10 minutes.

Onc appt went really well. My white count went back down below normal though! ahhhck! 3.7 after being nearly 6 in May -- they think that one was an anomoly. But, She said everything else was good, look good, feel good, etc. She said I'll go to every 6 months when I hit the 4 year mark. That'll be next summer.

Celebrated by eating out Mexican! I'll have to make up for that...

Hi there...I'm new.  Going through reconstruction.  Had an infection in right TE, had it removed.  Left TE has 5 more fills and it's done.  Going back for surgery to get right TE put back in just after Thanksgiving.  Soooo glad I found this topic.  I'm a fitness freak, and with the surgeries and TE complications, exercise has been taken.  It's my stress reliever and makes me feel so good. But I'm not letting it get the best of me.  I had some fluid buildup on the good (left TE) side, and my PS said to stop the jogging and step classes (bummer!).  So I did, got the fluid drained, no infection, laid off the impact exercising.  All good.  So I slowly am putting some light jogging back into my daily routine (I hope that's OK!), because I feel good.  Going back to spin classes tomorrow too.  Is it OK to do sit ups?  Any thoughts on that?  I've been doing reverse crunches, but it's not cutting it LOL.  Also, anyone do P90X?  Is it OK for me to do that while going through this whole reconstruction thing, or should I just lay low?  Looking forward to chatting with you ladies.

Hi Momo - welcome to our group! It is nice to have you here. I was amazed reading how much excising you do considering that you are still healing from surgery. As to what I would do . Well, it hasn't been that long since I had my TE on my chest. I remember I was in pain when I had my fills, so I did yoga to build back whatever muscles I had left after my mx. Yoga helped to build back my strength not only in my upper body and back, but in my stomach, too. So instead of doing crunches I do yoga. And that also makes me sweat, which is good to get rid of the toxins in the body. Spinning sounds good, though, I might try that at the gym one of these days.

I have been wanting to do Yoga, but afraid of the upper body strain.  It's OK?  I have a really good friend who runs a Yoga Studio, who is also a BC survivor.  That would be awesome!  I've just been laying off of anything upper-body.  Thanks!!

I would ask my doctor first what to do. How long ago was your surgery? I started doing gentle and restorative yoga three-four months after my mx/TE surgery. Momo, please get clearance from your doctor first before you do any excersizing. Later on, once you are fully healed, you will have lots of time to catch up. Give you body time to heal.

MoMo, are you doing the elliptical? Is that the P90X? No impact and great cardio! Also bicycling is very low impact, except if you hit a bump, but you can steer around! You don't want to get an infection in the TE area, I'd be careful and go for high intensity but low impact. Ha, this is what I do anyway with my old body!!!

Had my eyes dilated today and it gave me such an eye-ache I skipped yoga!! (You know it's bad when I skip yoga...) BUT I do NOT have Glaucoma, not even early! The puff test was way off. I went to an eye center to be sure. I LOVE hearing there is "nothing wrong with your eyes, they are perfectly healthy". YAY!!! Worth the eye-ache I guess....

    Spring,

Glad your eyes are healthy!  YAY!  Oh, my eye doctor won't do that puff test.  She even gave me an HRT test and a visual fields test.  I have to go back next month, as it's been 2 years since my last exam, but my insurance will only pay once every 2 years...  I will check and see if they will do annual exams, while I am still on Tamoxifen...

    Welcome momof3

I'm thinking of joining Curves this fall. It's mostly circut training but they also have Zumba classes. Anyone ever tried Zumba?

Spring, yay for good appointments! My last eye apointment a couple months ago they told me i could go for catarac surgery anytime. I have had one on my left eye for years but it really has not changed all that much. Because of this I am eligible for eye exams yearly. Think I'll wait a bit on that tho as it does not bother me very much. I thought cataracs was an age thing??? Mine showed up at 40!

My TE replacement surgery was in May, so I'm healed up.  My PS knows I'm pretty active, she just told me to take it easy for a while.  That was about a month, maybe 5 weeks ago when the fluid was drained off (and turned out to be just fluid - no infection).  I'm going back to spin class today.  I agree - stay away from the impact exercising.  I'll try the elliptical machine - good idea.  I'm in FL so I do like to get outside as much as possible.  Good for the mind, body and soul.  Have a great day!

Momo, you could try gentle yoga and see how you do. The serenity is nice and the stretching is awesome. :)

Crazy, I've never tried Zumba, but it looks SO FUN!! It's on my list.

Yes, thanks all, my eyes are "normal" and I am not going blind!! I love having medical check ups that are "normal" -- we take nothing for granted anymore, do we??

Tonight is the Pink Ribbon Yoga pot luck for the committee members. Maybe I will see Joy there!!

I had a great work out this morning on the elliptical. 40 minutes of sweating. Plus biking back and forth  to the gym. That is an additional 30 minutes. Plus, I had a healthy vegetarian turkey sandwich from the health food store, afterwards some raspberries/yogurt and a  scoop of caramel gelato. I just couldn't resist it. Besides, tomorrow is my dreaded appointment with my onc.I am trying to be really good to myself.

Crazy - zumba is fun. I tried it and will continue doing it when I can catch a class.

Spring - enjoy your yoga pot luck! Sounds good!

I am heading out for another bike ride while it is still nice wheather. Hugs to everyone!

It's kind of funny - I have an appt. with my Onc on Sept 30th! My birthday of all days-what was I thinking - I've been walking almost everyday -at least 2 miles sometimes up to 4. It feels so important to my well being- the first about 10 minutes suck - my legs hurt and ache- but once I get past all that I am good to go! There is a good article in First Magazine this month about walking and it's benefits - I have to go back and read more post's -you ladies have been prolific!Cool

Survivor - thinking of you today (your onc appt).  How did it go?

Welcome Momo!!  You motivate me already!

I've been crazy busy!!  But, I've walked each day at lunch, been 100 degrees here everyday - UGH so did 30 min brisk walks in the mall each day.  Have only done gentle yoga once though.  Have to get back on track!

Crazy-my daughter is 27 and had cataract surgery (caused from prior eye surgeries and steroids in her eye)...hugs

If you go to a zumba class, my advice is don't go to a really crowded one...I did not enjoy that one!

Springie, what's up with the lower white count?  UGH!

Ellie, the best birthday present will be leaving your onc appt and feeling good at great you are doing!

    Spring, did you see Joy?

Ladies-- good news! My appointment with the onc went well. I am going to get Herceptin starting next week after I do my muga scan. Until then I continue to take the clinical trial drug and the night before I start Herceptin I will stop Tykerb. So all is well....so to say. I am so relieved. What a day!
