Stormy.....I am so sorry this happened, but under NO circumstances beat yourself up!  We as cancer patients often don't realize the toll it takes on those who love us.  It happens.  Your daughter feels close enough to you to reach out and ask for help.  You did everything right hon.  Depression happens, and can be easily treated.  If she has had a lot of other ongoing issues and then worried about you, a bout of depression in not unheard of.  Hopefully she and the doctor can decide what will help the best.  I am glad she is going.  She will heal...she may be at a transitional point in her life and just need some help with everything.  Asking for help is the best thing to do!  You are entitled to your tears.  My heart goes out to you, but know you are doing all the right things and this too shall pass.

Big healing hugs to both you and your daughter!

    Janis

    MostlySew,

I'm having 28 regular sessions and 8 boosts, so 36.  Almost as many--it'll be just over seven weeks.

StephN I can confirm that Calendula and Aloe (99% for me) have helped a great deal.  I hate the Aquaphor too--just too gooey.  I started out pink (infection or lymphadema they said) and so now, after only 7 treatments I am quite red.  The tech told me to use a cold wet washcloth to draw off some of the heat and I have found it works great and is very soothing.

I had treatment number 15 today.  Almost halfway there.  My tech did notice that I am getting pretty pink.  So far the calendula is helping.  I have topical lidocaine, but boy it is just so greasy I don't use it too much.

I hope everyone is doing well today.  SAB the washcloth does sound lijke it would be really soothing.  Thanks for letting us know.

    Ladies;

I need to know if I should rub anything on before and after treatment. What about showers? What kind of shower sopa to use. The rads team has not answered any questions. Also wearing my prothesis or getting another bra. Thanks.

Revmama - My RO had me start using a moisturizing lotion before my first treatment, but requested that I come to my treatments with nothing on the skin or armpit before treatment.  I put on lotion afterwards. I am using Aquaphor.  I was not advised to use anything special in the way of soap.  I am using a moisturizing soap with almond oil.  I have had 6 treatments, and so far no problems.

Oh - and if your RO didn't tell you, antiperspirant is a no-no.  Nothing with aluminum in it.  You can use an aluminum free deoderant.  Whole Foods carries a large selection.  PM me if you need additional info.

revmama....  I use Dove soap.  As the others said, nothing before a treatment.  I use calendula gel for my skin and so far it works fine.  So not scrub your breast/armpit area.  I was told not to use a washcloth or a loofah, and to pat dry not rub.  Also lukewarm water only when you shower or bathe.  No hot water for awhile.  Good luck to you!

I just had my mapping done and will get my first treatment next Thursday.  I am doing this backwards, since chemo should come first.  My Pathology results were unexpected and I was not at all prepared for any chemo.  I thought it would just be radiation, but the tumor grew instead of shrink, like we thought it was doing (while I took Femara for 7 months) and it spread to two lymph nodes.  I've had trouble find a medical oncologist (long story) and then the one I finally decided on was called out of town for emergency for a few weeks, before I could even meet with her.  That's when I decided to go ahead with the Rads.  I got no info on lotions, deodorant or anything, so thank goodness for your advice!

jjjsjames, pretty sad people have to come here to find out what to do in preparartion for treatment.  We are so lucky to have this place to come for just for basic advice.  Some of what we need to know is just fundamental.  I learned a lot here too.  i am almost halfway through rads and this place has been such a valuable source of information.  Much luck to you!

I also was told not to shave under my arm on that side. :(  good thing I really dont need too.

The fatigue from rads is far worse than chemo fatigue for me.  I only have had 5 with 23 to go.

    To all,

Thanks for the support with my daughter! She seems a little better after a long talk last night and will go to the dr. tomorrow.

To address the concerns about lotions: My RO said not to use anything till he tells me. HA! I'm getting Miraderm this weekend and that Utterly Smooth Cream, if I can find them. Today was tx #5, tonight my breast feels like its burnt (its not, not even pink) and my chest muscles or breast tissue HURTS. I'm not having chest pain, I wouldn't say, but I guess I'd say that my lung hurts. I asked the techs today if they were hitting my lung and they said no. However, last week they took chest x-rays on Fri and said they would do that every Friday because I see the RO on Fridays. They took chest x-rays today (its only Wed), so that makes me wonder, ya know. I will definitely ask the RO about it this Friday. But has anyone else felt this?

This whole trip is....SUCH A TRIP....I want a refund or a "Do Over"

    Love you girls!

ks......your poor body has been through so much.  I think you are probably just feeling the cumulative effects of it all.  I did not have chemo and cannot relate to that.  I would just think that rads after chemo is tough.  Hang in there hon.  I hope it gets easier for you.

Stormy I am glad you and your daughter had a good talk.  I am sure she is worried for you and of course she will be.  I am so glad she sees the doctor tomorrow and I really help she gets some help.  Poor thing, cancer is hard on everyone.  Hoping she starts feeling much better very soon.

I had that AWFUL bout of real severe chest pain a week ago today.  There was never a diagnosis and I still feel real unsettled about the whole experience.  I still have some mild pain in my chest.  Thank goodness not severe.  My RO just blew me off, saying it was not related to treatment.  I see him again tomorrow to get the results of my thyroid ultrasound.  I also have an appointment tomorrow with my regular doc.  I had the results sent to him as well.  I see the RO tomorrow after rads..and an hour later see my regular doc.  I hope they come up with the same interpertation!

Hang in there everyone!  I carry you all in my heart.  You ladies have become so important to me.

    Take good care!

Stormy123 - I too have the breast tissue pain (#9 for me today). My nurse said it was normal. I am starting to think that breast density may be a factor. I have VERY dense breasts and I have the pain. It is not severe, but it does ache. I have a long way to go, so I'm hoping that it stays the same and doesn't keep getting worse (it might even get better...fingers crossed). In any case, we'll get through this together. Hugs.

I was told not to shave on that side, too.  The long hair makes me laugh.   They told me cornstarch is okay to use before treatment and it helps keep the underarm area dry.  For deodorant, I use Tom's of Maine as soon as the treatment is over but they also said that the crystal kind is okay, too.  I found mine at a Whole Foods store.

I had my third treatment today.  I thought it was going to be a breeze at first, but I'm having some anxiety while I lie there.  Being so still while that huge machine goes around me, knowing what it's doing is really hard, even though I know the ultimate result is good. Anyway.

    Only 33 to go...

#1 of 33 plus 5 today. Took an hour as they had an emergency or something. I had my knitting with me so the delay was fine with me. A little pink already tonight but the cool washcloth helped calm the heat down.

MOSTLYSEW, I also had my first real rads treatment yesterday.  It went very quickly, they zapped me in three diff areas.  Directly afterwards, before I even left the hospital, I felt a wave of sleepiness and some warmth in my chest and neck.  Then it went away by the time I left.

I keep worrying about how in the world am I going to clean up my house, it's been dirty for so long, but next week will do a couple hours for three days, I have a little list, should be done in two or three weeks that way, in the mornings before I go to rads at 1:00.  Rugs need cleaning, think I'll get a washing type vacuum instead of paying someone to do it, and husband volunteered to do it and anything else I need him to do to finish up cleaning.  It's been a HUGE obstacle for me to feel free, and I want it all done before rads are done, becuz that's the end of treatment.  I know, I shouldn't push myself and worry so, but I trust once I get into cleaning, I'll stick to it until.  It's picking up that first piece of laundry, dusting that first dresser, facing the music.  Sorry, with everyone else's big problems, leave it to me to create one. GG

Dog, here in our community, there are people who will come and clean your house if you are undergoing breast cancer treatment. I have some friends who took advantage of that while they were undergoing chemo and recovering from mastectomies. You should look into that, see if there is anything similar in your area! Do you have a breast cancer center where you live? Is there a social worker or coordinating nurse or something at your hospital? Is there a Gilda's Club? Those are some ideas for who to call and ask about these kinds of services.

Dogeyed don't beat yourself up!  Do what you can, when you can and don't sweat the small stuff.  If it is really bothering you then your approach seems good.  Make a list, baby steps.  Don't try to do it all in a short time frame.  Just do a little bit at a time and celebrate the small victories!

Yeah, but I'd have to clean the house to even let a cleaner in here, LOL.....I like the do a bit at a time way, and then I count it as my exercise for the day! Works for me. Off to #2, my boob is definitely pink, which is way too early for that business. Perhaps it's the aquaphor.

I totally clean our house before the house cleaner comes by! My partner is cluttery and I just don't see how they can clean if there's all that clutter and mess.

Dogeyed, I agree with everyone else, do the cleaning in small bouts. I was doing ok with not being too tired, but its lunch time and I'm ready for bed! WTH! I have a feeling its going to be fenfer dinner tonight...AKA Fend for yourself, lol  We seem to be having more and more of those.

Ceeztheday, Keep me posted on your breast pain and I will do the same.

Janis, I hope you are on here tonight. I've been thinking of you all day, wondering how your appts are going.

Natters, OMG you clean before someone comes over to clean?! I so would do the same thing!!!! Too funny, glad to hear I'm not the only OCD cleaning person!

I am getting my last full radiation treatment today, and then I will have 4 boosts. I can see the finish line yeah. I am a little itchy, and my RO prescribed 25 mg of Benadryl which I take at night. It works like a charm. I have done very well with Miaderm and Udderly Smooth body cream. Patty I agree with you the waiting room for radiation depresses me, because there are a lot of very old sick people, that I feel sorry for.

I know what you mean about the waiting room for rads being a sad place.  I expected to see very sick people during my chemo, but my chemo buddies were a healthy looking group.  I saw some very ill people during rads.  It made me count my blessings.

    Congrats Katehudson25!

Justmejanis-I had chest pain today about an hour after my treatment. Lasted about an hour, but the area still feels tender. I was so close to calling my RO, but then it got better. I will def bring it up tomorrow.

Day 12 for me and the skin issues have started. The area under the breast is pink/ red and there are two small blisters. It is also getting itchy. I still have 21 more treatments...yikes!

Fatigue is also begin to sink in. I thought it was just being back at work, but the last couple of days it's gotten worse. I think someone else mentioned feeling like you took benadryl and that's a perfect description. Of course my sister (same one that compares her boob job pain to breast cancer surgery), told me that she heard that rear h shows radiation doesn't actually cause fatigue. It's just the added routine to your day. Seriously, that's the support I get!!

I'm the first one at my center, so I only see one other woman and an older gentlemen waiting. The woman is very bitter. One day we had to wait and she was not thrilled about the 15 minute delay. Then she sort of snapped at me asking, "what are you doing here? Your too young for this!". She was surprised to hear I was in my 40's. She just seemed so negative-I felt really sad for her.

Anyway, so happy that tomorrow is Friday and then we have the weekend off.

Leighsa, (btw, love the way you spell your name), sorry your sister is not much emotional support for you.  There are those of us who definitely become fatigued by the rads, and it's not the routine of the rads, it's the treatment that affecting the body.  The rad technician ladies at the center where I go are very personable, but I still hate going.  However, tomorrow will mark the 'over half way done' point, so am happy about that.

Thank you, ladies, all of you who contribute to this thread.  I didn't think the rads would wear me out like it's doing, and I appreciate the comments and insight you all add to this part of the process.
