Insurance question
So, even though I live in IL right now, I hate this state and am planning on moving.... at some point. Not sure when. Could be soon, could be in a couple of years. But what I wonder is this - I'm self-employed, so I pay for my own insurance with BCBS of IL. If/when I move to another state, is it like I'm starting from scratch and with a pre-existing condition, so my insurance (if I can get it) will be insanely expensive? I know some new stuff goes into effect with the new health care reform law, but I don't know if that just says that insurance companies now have to offer insurance to those with pre-existing conditions, but doesn't do anything about the cost of it?
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
Tasha

hmmm good question! I don't know because I've never relocated or had my own insurance like that. I have experience with COBRA and having to pay that until being able to get on a new insurance...why does it have to change just because you're moving? I mean I figure it would but when you're paying your own that sucks

I know, and it worries me. SO fucking ridiculous that we have to worry about this shit on top of everything else! :-(

Hmm....we just switched from Anthem Blue Cross (California) to BCBS of Texas but we live in California (its through DHs work). I wonder if you could continue BCBS of IL even if you moved to a different state? For us, same pre existing clause applies: as long as there was no lapse in coverage, they will cover me (doesnt matter that we changed from CA insurance to TX insurance).

Heather, good points. I'd think though that BCBS of IL would only cover IL doctors? I'll have to look into that. And Ill look into the pre-existing thing too -I know that works for insurance through employes, but i don't know what if any rules apply when you're self-employed....

I say call Kaiser and ask them rates and all that information. I LOVE them. 800-245-3181, they also have a live chat if you don't want to talk
I understand too that Kaiser was chosen as a Health Care Reform model. Oh, yeah, and I LOVE my doctors.

Kaiser! Thanks Kiim - I was trying to remember the name of your hospital........

Now if you have your insurance through your business, group of one, pre-existing doesn't apply! Might be worth looking into this, vs, insurance as an individual. When I moved to Colo from Maine, I could stick with BC/BC, but it at that time, it was riduclouslyy expensive. If you stay with BC/BS , even in another state, pre-existing will not apply! Hope this helps... xo Bany

MissCurmudgeonly, there's a forum here on BCO called Insurance and Other Financial Issues where you'll find others' questions and answers about this subject. Also, on the main Breastcancer.org site, the Paying for Your Care section has additional info that may help you.
