I feel like I'm falling apart! I had a BMX and lots of nodes removed in December. I did chemo, exchange surgery and just finished radiation about 8 weeks ago. Starting on Saturday I noticed some numbness in my thumb. Later than night my arm started feeling tight and heavy - no swelling though. Yesterday I was diagnosed with a capsular contraction of my right implant, but now I'm wondering if all of these new symptoms might be early signs of LE. Which of my many doctors do I call? The BS? The MO? The RO?

I have a sleeve that I got for a vacation. Should I wear it until I can get into the doctor? Do you sleep in it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm freaking!!!

Aw, sundermom, I'm so sorry!Frown I sure do understand the panic, but want to reassure you this is all going to work out and you'll get your life back again.

Let's sort out the tight, heavy, and numb first. Sure could be the start of LE, but if so it's the very earliest start and that's great news -- when you seek treatment this early, gaining control is much easier, and with some awareness on-going you can expect it not to progress.Cool What you need is a prompt evaluation by a well-trained lymphedema therapist. Here's how to find one near you:
    http://www.stepup-speakout.org/Finding_a_Qualified_Lymphedema_Therapist.htm

And what you need for that is a referral from any doctor on your team. Doesn't matter which one -- whichever one is most likely to listen to you. None of them treat it themselves, some of them don't know squat about it, and most of them won't take any responsibility for it, but that's okay -- all you need is the referral. Smile, speak patiently, insist.

IF the sleeve is a really good fit, and IF you have a glove or gauntlet to wear with it, you can wear them until you get an appointment. NOT at night, though, as they can twist and constrict lymph flow. Here's information about how to judge a good fit for a sleeve and gauntlet or glove:
    http://www.stepup-speakout.org/proper_fitting_of_lymphedema_garments.htm

And here are some ideas of what to do for yourself until you get in to see a good therapist:
    http://www.stepup-speakout.org/How_You_Can_Cope_with_Lymphedema.htm#while%20waiting

If all that's too much information, just concentrate on getting a referral. Then you can go from there. One day at a time (hmmm, where have you heard THAT before!Tongue out)

    It's gonna be okay!

    Keep us posted. Gentle hugs,
    Binney

Thanks Binney! I'm going to call the MO today since his office returns my calls the fastest. I wore the sleeve for a couple of hours last night, took it off and then slept with my arm elevated. Things seem to be a tad better this morning, but I still plan on making the call. I'm supposed to have surgery next Tuesday to release the capsular contracture and I don't want any additional complications.
