Hello everyone. I'm new here and posted in the worried forum but thought I would post here too. I'm scared I might have IBC. For the past month, I have had a burning sensation in my left breast that has progressed to include pain in a certain spot when touched. I've had a breast infection before and I don't think that is what this is. I have a diagnostic mammogram scheduled for Thursday, but the waiting is killing me. I know I shouldn't have waited so long to seek help, but I don't have insurance and really thought it was nothing until I started researching and learned about IBC. Did anyone here with IBC start out with these symptoms? Thanks for reading.

Well, I went to an OB/GYN today for a second opinion. He said that I didn't have a breast infection (which I already knew) and did a breast exam. When he started poking and prodding on my left breast, I cried out in pain! But, he said that the pain is not only in my breast but in my chest wall and that I didn't "feel like I had" IBC. He said that I probably pulled something or slept on it funny!?! (Even though I've had symptoms for a month!) But, he wants me to go ahead with the mammogram and see what it says. So, now I'm waiting some more and don't know what to do. Most of the time IBC isn't detected by a mammogram, right? Now what??

Songbird, you might want to go to a breast clinic or a breast specialist. Your ob/gyn is not the one who would know about this.

    Best of luck.

sonbird: the waiting is the worst part. I really feel for you. Hopefully someone who was diagnosed with IBC will be along to give you some advice.

You need to see a breast specialist/surgeon ASAP, they are the ones who will know.

I would think a mammogram would be painful with how you have described the pain,

Correct, mammo does not always pick up IBC. Mine was found only on an MRI after my mammo was clear.

YOu may want to see a breast specialist after you see your OB/GYN. Skin/punch biopsy in several parts of the breast is usually used to detect IBC.

    Best to you,

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I do want to go see a breast specialist (the closest one is an hour away), but my family wants me to wait until after I find out what the mammogram says. And since I have no health insurance, and they are the ones paying for part of my medical bills, I'm kind of stuck. All I know is I grow more concerned every day because the pain and burning just keeps getting worse and last night it even woke me up. I really just want some relief and some answers, you know?

    Hi Michelle,

Oh, my goodness, please don't feel like you are stuck not being able to make your own health decisions because your family is paying part of your bills!  After all, they love & care about you, which is one of the reasons they are paying for your health coverage.

Of course, I don't know for certain, if it is available in your state, but try Google: Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program (BCCTP); include the name of the state you currently live in in the key words.  I think this program is nationwide.  That is, assuming you are in the U.S.

    HTH.

    Songbird123,

If you can, tell the technician who does the mammo that you want him to do a diagnostic mammo which specifically looks for the "sheeting or nesting" of tumors, not a solid lump. Mention that you have several signs and symptoms of IBC. If you can, print out a brochure on the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Foundation website (www.eraseibc.com).  I sincerely hope you can get a proper diagnosis before long. You may also find links on the above website to sites that will help with some of the financial problems you face without insurance.

Those who have told you that a mammogram won't detect IBC are correct.  I had a mammogram that was 'normal' while I had IBC.  Even if the mammo shows normal, don't trust it if you still have symptoms.

    Michelle,

Have you found out anything yet?

No, not yet. They said I should hear from the doctor the mammogram results today or tomorrow. *sigh* I hate waiting!!

OK, just found out that the mammogram came back "normal," which I figured it would since I don't have a lump. But I'm not giving up until I find out what's wrong with me! I have a call in now to a nurse at the UAB Kirklin Clinic's Breast Health Clinic. The University of Alabama-Birmingham has an excellent cancer center and the Kirklin Clinic is supposed to have a program to help people like myself with no health insurance. I hate this...you shouldn't have to fight to find out what's wrong with you!

Songbird, if it's any help, I have IBC, and my initial symptoms were not pain.  Rather I noticed the whole end of my boob felt very hard, and that's when I noticed it was darker than the other one and very swollen.  It was weeks later that I felt a little shooting pain, and then finally I got a reddish smudge mark on my skin.  It was a clnical diagnosis with a cancer surgeon for IBC.  So, after months of chemo and FINALLY surgery, the lab report said I indeed had IBC.

So, COULD BE the pain you feel is from something else besides IBC, is my guess.  AND since mammo showed no growths, then could very well be you have mastitis, I think it's called, where you get a dreadful infection in your boob, like you had before.  It just could be this one is worse than that one was, and since you have had one, it makes the most sense you have it again.  They should also listen to your lungs when you breathe, it can hurt a lot in a similar area, too, as well as your heart, and they should feel every one of your ribs (to avoid an expensive scan, even tho the Kirklin Clinic has a program to help those uninsured).  Keep us posted!  GG

I was finally able to get to see my usual nurse-practitioner this morning, and when she did a breast exam, she discovered that the place where most of my pain is that there is a thickening of the skin. :( Not good news. But, she actually knows about IBC, and agrees that I should have a biopsy performed. However, she wants me to have it done at UAB's Kirklin Clinic, because she's afraid none of the doctors in this small town would know what to look for. Also, she said that if it is cancer, she would rather that I be treated at UAB Hospital. Which I can't argue with. So, now I'm waiting again. I've started the process for the Charity Care program at Kirklin Clinic, and I am in contact with a nurse at one of the breast doctor's down there, so between my np's referral, and the nurse at the Kirklin Clinic, I am hoping I can be seen soon

    Songbird,

Glad you are able to get the biopsy done.  Let us know how you're doing.

SONGBIRD, I am sorry to hear of your nurse's findings.  If the biopsy comes up clear, insist they make SURE what it is, becuz I recall one lady on our website here that it took a bunch of tests, all clear, so in the process of figuring out WHAT she had, finally a second one of the tests finally diagnosed her with IBC.  GG

GREAT NEWS! The breast  specialist/oncologist I saw today, Dr. Bland, is also a breast expert and has written several books on breast cancer. I'm telling you this to say that I
believe he knows what he's talking about. With that being said, he told me
that  he fully believes that I do NOT have IBC!! He thinks that it's the
amount of Premarin that I take that is causing my problems. (I had a full
hysterectomy  when I was 27.) I still go back on Oct 18 for the mammogram and
ultrasound and  after that they're going to figure out what to do about my
medicine, but I am  soooo relieved. It's taken me a while for it to fully sink
in, because I was  prepared for the worst. Thanks for all the supportive messages and info that I've gotten! YAY!!!

    Hi songbird 123:

You are absolutely correct. If you don't have a lump, chances are high that a Mammogram would not detect it. An ultrasound may help, if it shows certain pooling of the blood. As you know, because it grows in sheaths.....it is extremely difficult to detect.

Sorry, I think your Dr. is off.....if you had it for a month it wouldn't be because you slept in an unusual position!! If it was me, I would definitely opt for an MRI......I feel this is the best (but doesn't always find it either.)

As we are all different so are our symptoms. Mine was swollen, hurt off and on (but no big issue) and then became itchy as well. They definitely thought it was an infection and I was put on anti-biotics which, of course, didn't help. Mine was extremely strange as it would come and go.......at times it felt and looked completely normal. I was out of the Country for some time and to make a long story short; it could have been found at least a half year sooner (which is a long time for IBC). I truly believe had it been so, it would not have gone to the lymph nodes as it did.

I urge you, please look after it ASAP...... they could do a core biopsy....which I would opt for. I've learned a lot and blame myself a lot, you must be your own ADVOCATE..be firm and don't let them string you along and such valuable time passes.

I sincerely hope yours isn't IBC, and probably isn't..........but away you go, ASAP to have it looked after. Today I would do everything different!!

    Good Luck

    Erika
