Dogeyed, welcome to September rads! I started in August so I still post a bit over there. Hopefully rads will be gentle to you. Tomorrow I go for #14 out of 33. So far I have been fine as far as skin goes. A little irritation but nothing serious. I did have that strange bout of incredible chest/rib pain that sent me to the ER. That is where the CT scan found my two thyroid nodules. I am waiting for the results of my ultrasound. Should hear later this week. Anyway, welcome to the club!
vickilf, sorry you have to go through all of this with two different cancers! Do you mind if I ask what else you are dealing with? Sending lots of healing hugs to you.
-
dogeyed - Can I join you in the Bahamas when we're all done with this BC business? ;-)
bedo - Too funny! Thanks for the laugh this morning.

Good Morning ladies, I start Rads on Tuesday. A little nervous and anxious at the same time. I am pretty bummbed that I wount be getting the Herceptin but, they know what they are doing, right? I just want to get this all over with. I hope you all have a wonderful day wherever you are. I am going to enjoy the Northern California fog for now and the sunshine when it decides to make an appearance.

ashleere - Why would you be bummed about not getting the Herceptin? Did you have microinvasions with your DCIS? I asked my MO and she said no need with DCIS, even with the microinvasions. I wondered a little too but very happy not to have to take it. You will feel better about the rads once you start and get into the routine. I have only 9 to go of 33 and it really has flown by with mininal skin issues and some fatigue. Nothing that has been awful.
janis - Thinking positive for you on you results on your thyroid this week.

Hi dogeyed,
I start my radiation wed 9/14 also and " dry run" the day before. So, we're on the same schedule and can compare. I, fortunately, didn't have to do chemo for which I'm so thankful. All you gals that have been thru that too are my heroes. I don't know the exact number of sessions I'll have, but know it involves whole breast radiation and some number of boosts and will probably take 6 1/2 weeks.
I am so glad to get this part started. For me, it's always seemed like the light at the end of the tunnel. Silly me, I was even marginally looking forward to my tats, kinda like a badge of courage. Well, they just plain don't show. I can only find the one under my arm. A friend suggests I get a "real" one after I'm all done, but I think that's going too far.
I think my only concern right now is this sport bra business. I'm quite large breasted, and sport bras do nothing except squish my boobs onto my chest, and I don't think that's quite the idea. I'm quite happy not wearing a bra, but them I've got even more skin to skin contact. Guess I'll just buy stock in cornstarch and hope for the best. Anyone else got Amy ideas about that one?
Peggy ( lumpectomy 7/7 , re-excision for non-healing tissue 8/15, radiation start 9/14). -
Clelia, hi neighbor. I'm sitting here in Sebastopol waiting for my rads to start Wednesday and also enjoying the fog. Are you, by chance having your radiation in Petaluma? That's where I'll be going daily, to the Lynch creek offices. Perhaps I'll see you there.
Janis, I'm glad your rib pain has resolved itself. That stuffs no fun. Let us know about your thyroid ultra sound, sending positive thoughts.
Peggy -
Rads got postponed because I'm not healed up enough from surgery. Now I have my set up appointment on Sept. 19th and will start sometime after that. I really just want to get this show on the road!
For anyone doing chemo after, did your doctor say how long between radiation and start of chemo? I am going to ask my doctor to give me about 3 weeks so that I can have Thanksgiving with family before starting more chemo.
-
Julianna, the onc said that with just 2 rounds of Herceptin the chance of reoccurance is cut in 1/2. i thought those were amazing odds.
Peggy, hi neighbor! Looks like we may be on the same schedule except I am going to the Cancer Center in Rohnert Park ( I have Kaiser). You must be with Dr. Stanton's group? They are very nice there. They took care of my sister. Too bad Helen left, she is an amazing nurse and such a caring person. Good luck.
Janis good luck with the ultrasound.
Have a great afternoon everyone.

justmejanis - Thank you very much for your encouraging words. Much appreciated.
-
dogeyed - welcome!
vickilf - hang in there! I go for #4 on Monday, too. I have a 1 hr round trip every day which I find annoying. I can't imagine a 3 hr trip!
-
ashleere - welcome! You are not too far behind some of us.
blondelawyer - I did chemo before rads and they suggested 3 weeks between to give the system a chance to process the final chemo dose. I would think you could roll over from rads to chemo in about the same time.
-
Ceezthe day, you are most welcome! Everyone responds differently to the same treatment. I just hope you will breeze through it with very few problems. Stay positive and hopefully you will breeze right through it!
Julianna, MostlySew, Ashleere...thanks so much for the support regarding my ultrasound. I should know the results by Thursday and of course will update everyone. Thinking it is nothiing at all.
Everyone have a nice relaxing day. Hugs to all you brave ladies!
-
justmejanis - believing with you that it is nothing!
-
Welcome new comers! More support is always nice. I'm very thankful for all the ladies on here, for listening to me and giving advice.
Janis, I'll be thinking about you this week and praying for nothing on the results. I've had to change my prayer list at night because I can't finish all the names before falling asleep. However, I do refer to all of you here as my BC sisters, so the prayers are still going!
-
Stormy,
That is what we are here for, to help each other get though all of this. I so appreciate all the advice and support I have received here. This is a great group. We can always find some good old fashioned cheer here when we need a little jump start. We are the BC sisters indeed!
Neecee, no worries here at all. Just have a good feeling about this! Thanks for the warm thoughts.
I hope everyone is doing well tonight and you had a great day.

Question - Ok, so I have read some where that you shouldn't take vitamins while going through Rads. I take a multivitamin and D3 with calcium. I asked the techs if I should stop and they told me its fine. Now I just read it again. Anyone else been told not to take vitamins?
-
Stormy good question and I am not sure. I have a BC book that says not to take Vitamin D supplements during radiation. I believe that is the only vitamin it says to avoid. I think you should ask your RO to be sure. I am not sure the techs are the best source of information. It is confusing, there is a lot of conflicting information out there.
-
Vickilf - I have only a one hour round trip added to my work day. I teach all day, then drive south half hour to rads, then do the hour north home. I thought of your 3 hrs., and wish you well.
Clelia and Peggy - we're sort of neighbors, as I pass thru your area on my way to see my kids in Emeryville, from home north in Willits. Have cousins and my last living aunt in Petaluma, so I'm there at times, too. You two are enjoying cooler weather than we are, tho, as usual. Hang in there with the bc path we're all on. I finished chemo end July,, and tomorrow is #5 rad. Chugging along. -
I was told that you shouldn't take large doses of antioxidants during rads, but that other vitamins are okay. I have a high dose of Vit. D on my med list and my RO didn't say to stop taking it. I'll double check though.
-
Hi everyone. As some of you know from the August Rads board I was delayed several times into September. Going to #5 tomorrow. Hope you don't mind if I pop in from time to time to wish you well and enjoy the company
-
SAB...good to see you! I started rads in August and finish the first week of October. I am all over the place! I hope sll is going well with you. I go for # 14 today. So far so good!
blondelawyer...my MO told me prior to rads that my Vitamin D level is low, but he did not tell me how much to take or when. I am going to have to ask my RO when I see him Thursday. I won't see my MO until October.
-
Stormy - I did ask my RO about this since I read the same thing, and was worried I should stop taking my calcium w/ vit D. He said the issue is to not take mega doses of any antioxidants. He said no megadose of A,B,C,D or E, and no mega multivitamin. He said no problem to take a regular multivitamin daily and the D found in most calcium supplements.
-
Thank you all for the responses on the Vit. question. I guess Im safe as I'm not taking mega doses. I will still ask my RO this coming Friday.
-
#7 for me today (of 35 scheduled). Monday is supposed to be "doctor day", but he didn't bother to come in and sent the nurse. I asked her if soreness (inside the breast, not on the skin) was normal so early in the treatments. She said that it is normal the first week because it is "something new" for your body. Does that sound right? Have any of you heard anything like that. Any info greatly appreciated.
-
I have 7 treatments left, 3 regular and 4 boosts. I am still feeling fairly good. I am just a tad bit sore and itchy, but not bad at all. I can see the finish line yeah!
-
I had #3 of 28 today! So far so good!
-
Ceeztheday,
I have only had 3 treatments and had that pain after the first one, it has gotten more frequent now. When I asked about it, I was told it was the nerve endings healing after my surgery. I thought it was odd timing but excepted it. My surgery was 5 weeks ago. Now that I am hearing more say the same thing I think it has more to do with the radiation. Either way, it is what it is, we will get past all of this.
I had today off because my radiology place was getting new computers today. Tomorrow its back on the schedule. I must say I've enjoyed the normal day of work and then home, even had time to make dinner.
Keep your
on!
-
Ceezetheday I think that "inner" pain you are experiencing is very normal. I had a little in the beginning and have some still from time to time. I had rad #14 today. I am almost halfway there! Yippee!
My 18 year old niece did the most amazing thing for me today. Check this out:
-
Stormy123-my RO actually sent me for bloodtests specifiaclly for my Vit D level. Also some sort of estriogen test and a few other things I had not been tested for before. He said definitely continue taking vitamins and supplements-I am not taking anything out of the ordinary. He is expecting my Vit D to be way low and we will be discussing it when I get started. I am still in limbo til my BS releases me. He is into holistic and integrative therapies. Also an accupuncturist. He has creds from major universities in these things and is very interesting guy. I wish I had met him earlier in my treatment.
I will post whatever he ends up telling me to take.
-
Justme, that is beautiful.
jack--hi, do you have Rads in Santa Rosa? You peggy and I should get together forf coffee . we could meet somewhere in the middle.
My first tx was scheduled for tomorrow but it got cxld. machine down. They want me to come in at 7am on Wednesday. I barely get any sleep as it is and work sometimes 10 -12 hours a day, and they want me there that early. What am I supposed to do after? I guess go to Starbucks and work 1 hour early. Good time to catch up on paperwork.
I hope everyone has a good night. .
