Taking a break from Femara

Hi, everybody! I previously was on this board, but I couldn't remember my user name or password, so I signed up again today under a new name. I was diagnosed in October 2009 with stage IB Invasive lobular and ductal cancer. No lymph node involvement. First lumpectomy didn't get clear margins. Had cellulitis at time of second lumpectomy, so surgeon cancelled that surgery. Then decided on bilateral mastectomies, which turned out to be a wonderful blessing, because pathology report showed more cancer that MRI had not detected. Also had free-TRAM reconstruction at that time.

I had hysterectomy/oophorectomy in April 2010; then I started on Femara.

I've had so many SEs from the Femara. My joints hurt terribly; it's hard to go up and down stairs now; sometimes I lose my grip on a pencil because joints in hand hurt so much. Was diagnosed a couple of months ago with rheumatoid arthritis by a rheumatologist; my rheumatoid factor was high, and he says the rheumatoid arthritis was caused by all the trauma to my body (5 surgeries in all).

Also was hospitalized 4 times this past summer: first for sepsis, then fever, then abdominal abscess, then a blood clot caused by my pic line.

I asked my oncologist if I could take a break from Femara, because I'm not totally convinced that I have rheumatoid arthritis. I know some of the pain is from the Femara. I'm not sure, though, if Femara could cause my increased rheumatoid factor. Doc said I could take a 6-week break, so last Thursday I started NOT taking the Femara.

Since I've been off the Femara, I've had HORRIBLE hot flashes, like I did right after my hysterectomy. Has anyone else experienced problems coming off Femara? I've never heard of this, but the hot flashes are definitely worse since stopping Femara. I'm hoping this stops in a few days. My joints are already feeling a little better. My husband and I are taking a trip out west in a few weeks, and I really want to feel well during our trip.

Thanks for any info you all have! Smile

Has nobody else taken a break from Femara?

After 5 nights of not taking it, I'm really starting to feel much better. I want to enjoy the next 5 weeks and 2 days! :)

I've been on Femara for 3.5 years, and taken 2 different one-month-long breaks with my onc's permission when the s/es got too bad.  Within a week the s/e I was experiencing (hot flashes, fatigue, severe joint and muscle aches) began to diminish and were almost completely gone after about 10 days.  Additionally, my chemo pounds began to drop off even though I hadn't changed my diet and exercise program.

The nice thing is that even when I went back on Femara, it took the s/e several weeks to get bad again.  So for me, the bad s/e disappeared quickly once I was off of it, and took a long time to come back even when I went back on.

We're planning a trip to St. Kitt's in the Caribbean in February - I plan to negotiate with my onc for another break from Femara so I can enjoy that trip fully.  I hope you enjoy your trip as well!

Have fun on your trip to St. Kitt's! My husband and I are going on a trip to the Southwest in early October, and I'll still be on my Femara break, so I'm real excited about that!

It's good to know that other people take Femara breaks.

I've been on Femara for 2 years now.  The first 6 months were bad with joint pain.  I could not move quickly or get up easily.  I felt and moved like an old lady.  I took a few weeks break for travel and promised to get back on it when I returned.  I've been on it for almost 2 years now.  After the 6 months, I don't notice the s/e so much anymore and have minimum of joint pain.  I do take glucosamine & chondrotin daily.  Breaks are good as long as you get back on something that may be keeping you stable.

I'm stage IV with bone mets & have been stable for 18 months so far.  Have fun on your trip.

    Terri
