Soy - ER+

Options

I'm sure this topic is out there somewhere, but does anyone have any advice about soy intake?  I see some studies that say it helps prevent breast cancer, and others that say it is particularly bad for those with ER+ breast cancers like mine.  I have someone recommending a protein shake to me that is made from Soy protein but it says it is "non-GMO soy, no isoflavones".   Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My onc said if you ate it before BC, continue, but if not, don't start.  From what I've read studies indicate that if you've been eating it since at least adolescence, continuing to eat it will lower risk of  reoccurrence.  However, if you haven't eaten it in the past, the advice seems to be not to start now.

The most recent research and what I was told at UCLA is that natural soy in moderation is good for us.  What isn't good is soy protein isolate, which is soy protein powder (non-GMO or not), and anything that contains it, like most energy bars.  That form of soy has basically been altered and concentrated and if used on a regular basis could possibly stimulate estrogen production.

GMOs and toxicity are whole different issues, and the reasons why some people choose not to eat soy products.  Things like soy oil and lecithin are basically made from what's left after other products are produced, so are said to contain a very high amount of herbicide and pesticide residue.  I've also heard people question the purity of non-GMO and organic soy due to cross-polination, overspraying, etc.

    Hope this helps.    Deanna
