THanks AnnaM! I made an appointment with Maurice Y. Nahabedian, plastic surgeon in Georgetown. Will see. Thanks again.

Hi Tatyana~
I had my DIEP with Dr. Nahabedian at Georgetown.
Pros: Nice guy. Comfortable to talk with.
Great reconstruction job. Looks good AND I have feeling in it...
My Cons: I was in the small percentage who get a hernia after the surgery.
required a second surgery to put mesh in...
I still have a sort of "protruding tummy" under my incision site.
I asked about a "Stage 2 procedure" that the ladies on this thread talk about and he said he does not do that.
I am hoping with time and exercise I can get back to the flat tummy I had before chemo...
Thinking of you~
-
Thank you Ang7 a lot for pros and cons. I will definitely ask him about "stage 2 procedure". I didn`t think about it, thought one PS must do everything. What you going to do? Find another PS?
-
Ang,
Dr. Nahabedian is certainly world reknown for DIEP. However, have you thought about getting a second opinion on the "stage 2"? If so, I'd really recommend talking with the plastic surgeons at Johns Hopkins. It really isn't that far away, and I have found them to be wonderful!
-
Thanks Taty and BrandonMom~
My husband says leave well enough alone but I think I will look into a second opinion on it.
If it makes me unhappy then I am going to look at other options.
-
I'm scheduled to have UMX and DIEP on March 4. Dr. Nahabedian is my PS. I was probably not at my best the day I met with him, but didn't get warm fuzzies. I'd love to hear more on the stage 2. He did talk about a follow up in 3 months and I thought that was when we evened up the breasts and tweaked and fixed but maybe I misunderstood? I know the nipple tattoo is then another 3 months or so after that in the office. Do I have this right? I didn't realize until later how much of a toll this is taking on my self image and would love to have a PS who will help me get to a place where I can feel as good as possible about how I look given that I'll be down a breast.

Hi afield~
I do not get warm fuzzies with Dr. Nahabedian. I just got the feeling after speaking with 2 other PS's that he knew his stuff. He is pretty straightforward. I had followup appts. after my surgery and he did fix a spot on my incision when he put the mesh inside for my hernia. I guess I am just sad because when my surgery was done my tummy was flat and now after chemo I look bloated. I am "blaming" this look on the chemo, not the DIEP...
I have not gotten the tattoo yet but it will be an office procedure.
I can try to answer any questions you might have...
-
hi everyone, my wife had her DIEP last fall with Dr. Venturi at Fairfax, we couldn't be happier with his work, his staff, or how helpful he has been with her. His web site is at http://www.venturimd.com/.
She will have stage 2 this spring, he plans on lifting her "good" breast and putting some fat on her DIEP breast that he will get via lipo. After that he'll do the nipple & tatoo in his office.
-
Thanks imatthew, I like Dr.Venturi website, very informative, but he is not in my insurance.
-
Hi Ang7,
thanks for the feedback. The hernia sounds like a frustrating situation. I'm glad you were able to get it fixed. So what is this 'Stage 2' concept that Nahabedian doesn't do? And did you decide to go second opinion? If I'm going to need a second opinion I'd better do it quick. I got a billion second opinions on breast surgeons, but by the time I got to checking out PSs I was just too beaten down I think. Since I knew that Nahabedian was so well known and respected, I figured that I'd go with him so long as I didn't hate him. Not sure this is the right way to handle it though. . .
I know insurance is supposed to cover work to match up the existing breast and the 'new' breast. Does insurance cover if you do the initial work with one PS and then additional with a second?
Anyhow, any insights would be great. Also, if you (or anyone) has any useful tidbits on the surgery process at Georgetown, I'd love to hear. I'm not really familiar with the hospital, itself, or the rooms or anything. Don't even really know what to pack. *sigh* And I'm trying to figure out whether/when it will be ok for my kids to come visit me (they are 6 and 9 so old enough to get freaked out but young enough to need extra guidance/management).

Hi afield/Sasha~
I am gathering from the ladies on this thread that a Stage 2 would be getting rid of extra skin, and maybe some lipo of fat pockets that are present after the surgery? I do have some spots that I asked them about but maybe I am just being vain? I just look a bit lumpy right by my incision.
I really loved the breast surgeon at Georgetown and when I heard Nahabedian was well known for DIEP I decided to go with the package deal.
Concerning the hospital and the kids etc. There is a super lady at Georgetown, Denise O'Neill? I will look up her name to be sure. She is like a Coordinator and she helped me with so many things relating to the hospital. I will look for her card...
Are you close to Fairfax? You can PM me if you want...

taty - they weren't in our plan either but accepted whatever our insurance company paid for out-of-network (plus deductible), they don't balance bill.
ang - my wife goes for stage 2 this spring, he will add some fat to the diep side via liposuction, and will lift the "good" breast to match. After that's done and she's recovered, she'll have nipple reconstruction and tattooing done. She only has one small area of her abdominal scar that requires any modification. She's about 4 months out now and the scar is still there, but it's smooth. She still says her abdomen around the scar and breast feel kind of numb, our plastic surgeon said it will take about a year for the nerves to complete regenerate. Overall she's very happy with the choice of DIEP, especially after talking with friends who have had problems with tissue expanders and TRAM flaps.

Dear all,
As a researcher, former cancer patient, and a participant at the bc discussion boards, I have become interested in learning more about patients' reactions to the information they receive as they are diagnosed and presented with treatment plans that involve chemotherapy.
This interest has led to the development of a survey that asks about experiences with patient education materials provided at oncology centers across the nation. This is a formal study, and the research protocol has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Brown University, where I am on the faculty of the Division of Biology and Medicine.
The survey is anonymous and brief. It will take you about 15 minutes to complete the survey.
To participate in this research, here is the link:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PatientEducationMaterial
Your participation will add to the body of information on this topic and is intended to contribute valuable data regarding patient education materials for oncology patients. -
Hi All! I went today to Georgetown, met Dr.Nahabedian. On March 9 I have to meet breast surgeon Dr.Elizabeth Feldman. Anybody know her? I need to remove ovaries(my mom died from ovarian cancer 2 years ago). Just think to do it with DIEP.
-
Hi Taty~
We have a friend who saw Dr. Feldman. She has only good things to say about her...
The one I had, Dr. Cochilovo, has left Georgetown.
-
Thank you Ang7! Sounds very good for me. My DIEP planing to be in May, plenty of time, but Im already nervous.
-
Hi Ladies, I don't live in No. Va but somehow stumbled on this thread and was so excited to see that some of you are seeing Dr. Nahabedian. My DIEP was scheduled for 3/10 but I switched it to 3/31 because I want a bit more time to recover from treatments. I had a bmx at Hopkins and was going to do my recon. there, but after going to Dr. Nahabedian, who came with the highest recommendations, I decided to switch. I look forward to reading through previous pages here and getting tips, etc. I know I'll be in good hands with him and feel confident I made a good decision. Hope everyone is having a good Sunday! ~ Daiva

I have heard only good things about him. Good luck, Tatyana!

Hello NOVA ladies
I just finished round 2 DD AC, must say, it was another miserable round for me. Does anyone here know of a psychologist who specializes in talking to ladies with BRCA? I have been told I need counseling or therapy, so okay, but so far any I have called on my Tricare list haven't returned my calls. So how do I find this therapist??? Heck, love being told I need therapy. Also love being asked, for the 4th time, if I have gone to "Look Good, Feel Better", clearly they don't think I learned anything when I went!!!! Maybe I need a refresher course. I would love to know if anyone has a recommendation for a therapist.
Thanks!!
-
Linda Hi so sorry for what you are going through. I believe there is a counsler at Virginia Hospital center that is where i had my surgeries named Kerstin Perini she is a counselor that specializes in BC. I do see a therapist for PTSD, I see someone in Woodbridge as that is closer to where i live. Hope that helps, please let me know if i can do anything else. Just PM me
.. best wishes

Hello all.
Think I am late to the group but am so glad to see some of my neighbors here.. I am in Centreville, VA (Fairfax County) and was diagnosed the end of June. Getting ready to kick breast cancer butt next week when I have my BMX with TE surgery on 09/13... Have been reading the boards and note this looks to be quite a journey I have in store but it sure helps to have such wonderful people to share the joys & trials with.

odie - my wife finished chemo in march and will finish Herceptin at the end of the year, please private message us if we can be of any assistance. We've been fortunate to get wonderful care from Virgina Cancer Specialists.

Odie I wish you the best. I live in woodbridge. May I ask where you are having your surgery? I had mine at Virginia Hospital center. I also like Mathews wife go to Virgina Cancer Specialists. They are wonderful there. Please pm if there is anything I can do for you. I also had a biltarel masect with DIEP reconstruction. I just had my 4th and final surgery last month.
Mathew I hope your wife is doing well!
-
Thank you Tinkertude & Matthew for the warm welcome.
Funny thing about the surgery
... I am having it at Fauquier Hospital (Prince William & Fairoaks were booked too far out ) My BS is Cynthia Dougherty, love her!, and my PS is David Allison. All my treatment will be at the Lake Manassas Cancer Center in Gainesville which is a straight shot for me 8 miles west... Feel blessed to really like both my docs.
Hope you & Ms. Matthew are healing well.
-
Thanks Odie.. I wish you all the best!!! im here if you need anything
I agree liking and feeling comfortable with our docs is so important. My PS is in DC Steven Davison. I had no idea he would be the doc I would be seeing the most lol.. but he is great as well !

my wife had her surgery at Fairfax with Dr. Edmiston (BS) and Dr. Venturi (PS) and is having her chemo/herceptin treatments at the Lake Manassas center in Gainesville. We've been very happy with that location, plus it's near a Wegmans so I was able to run over get her lunch while she had her longer treatments (Herceptin takes less than an hour now). The nurses/staff there have been wonderful.
