Laurie - yes, I certainly do make gorton!!!  And pork pie or tortiere!  I had to come up with a recipe that my kids could recreate - my mom and Memere never used exact amounts to make it.  My daughter said she needed a "repeatable" recipe...lol.  So I figured one out for 5 pounds of ground pork butts.  That's enough for a pie and then a few containers to spread on toast or crackers.  Another month and it will be time to make it...I always think of it as a fall/winter thing.  Funny about your DH and two boys...do you have a female pet?  LOL!

OK, here's my take on gorton:

5 pounds ground pork butt, double ground if you can get a butcher to do that for you

2 large onions, peeled and chopped

    1 tablespoon salt

    1 teaspoon cinnamon

    1/2 teaspoon cloves

Put it all in a big pot and cook it slowly for about 4 hours.  Don't brown the meat, you are really simmering it.  If you want to use some to make pork pie, take out about a quart after a couple of hours.  Once it is cooked down, remove from heat and then beat it for a few minutes.  That will help it have a nice smooth consistency for spreading on toast.

We had a great night with Joycek and her DH. We are trying to figure out how our paths didn't cross sooner, as we have so much in common and we went to so many of the same places.

Tomorrow the kids are coming, the weather is supposed to be good, and it should be a fun lake day. I am a little tired, so we'll be keeping things simple.

Michelle- My recipe is similar.  Like you said there is no real recipe and I don't make the pork pie but when I do Gorton I make big batches and freeze small containers.  I do usually 4-5 pounds, add the onion and I don't do cinnamon, just lots of cloves, usually 2 heavy teaspoons.  I also do a pork stuffing at Thanksgiving which is basically hot gorton in a different consistency.  It is a once a year thing and I make a ton of it and there is never any left, which makes me happy.  I was never given a recipe but figured it out after two years of trying and am now told by my father and brother that it rivals my grandmothers and mothers stuffing :D

Hope you have fun with Joyce and your lake day tomorrow.  I haven't seen a weather report but I'm taking your word that it sould be nice!

Laurie - I have made pork stuffing, too.  Do you add bread to it or potatoes?  I haven't made it in a long time.  I seem to remember that it was essentially pork pie without the crust stuffed into the turkey.  I suspected your recipe was similar to mine because you spelled it the same way.  Some French Canadians spell it "cretons".  The different regional interpretations are so interesting!

Zumbagirl - your dinner sounds yummy.  I am very much into anything blueberries right at the moment.  And I love homemade cornbread.  It will soon be time for chili and cornbread!

Sometime this week I am going to make salted herbs:

    • 1 cup chopped fresh chives
    • 1 cup chopped fresh savoury
    • 1 cup chopped fresh parsley
    • 1 cup chopped fresh chervil
    • 1 cup grated carrots
    • 1 cup chopped celery leaves
    • 1 cup chopped green onions
    • 1/4 to 1/2 cup coarse salt

Preparation:In a large bowl, combine chives, savoury, parsley, chervil, carrots, celery leaves, and green onions. Layer 1 inch of herb mixture in the bottom of a crock or glass bowl and sprinkle with some of the salt. Repeat layers until all of the herb mixture and salt is used. Cover and refrigerate for 2 weeks. Drain off accumulated liquid and pack herb mixture into sterilized jars.

    Refrigerate until ready to use.

    Yield: 5 to 6 cups

Author's note: Herbs preserved with vegetables and salt make a lively seasoning for soups

My Memere would make these and ship them to us in Texas when I was a little girl.  I've always remembered it becaues I really like salty things, and I would go sneak a spoonful out of the jar and eat it plain.  Pretty sure I wouldn't do that now, but I look forward to adding it to beef stew and chicken soup!

Joyce, so glad you have tomorrow off for the holiday weekend.  All day I kept forgetting and remembering that my husband has it off as well.  I'm happy to have him home the extra day.  You are so right that if all three of us know what gorton is, we are a bunch of French Canadian girls!  When I met my husband and introduced him to gorton he informed me it looks like cat food.  Then he ate it :)  Like anyone, he loved it and reminds me when he takes the last container from the freezer.  So I know I need to make more.

It was so hot and muggy today I broke down and put the air conditioners on around lunch time and it is cool and comfy in here now.  Last night my husband went to pull steak tips out for dinner and pulled burger his first try- so I Had to some up with dinner using hamburger.  Since it is so cool in the house I just popped a batch of meatballs in the oven, and we are having spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, at the request of my son :)

    Enjoy the lake Michelle!

Apple- I've never made tamales either?

It was a beautiful day at the lake today, but now I am planted on the couch!  I had a few things ready before everyone got here - just some cut up veggies, a tomato-basil salad, and some cut up apples for the kids.  The only thing that required cooking was the corn and the chicken - easy-peasy!  Everyone had a good time and the last of the gang just left a couple minutes ago.  I'm probably not going to move off the couch until I go up to get my PJ's on!

Tomorrow we are heading to the casino, my two daughters and me.  It will be a fun time even if we come home with empty pockets.

Joyce - yes, we make the stuffing with potatoes, too.  My first MIL made hers with bread, which I thought was strange after growing up with the potato version.  Like everything else, there are so many regional differences!  My Memere was born in one of the "Ste" towns in Quebec, near Ste Anne de Beaupre, I think. I need to ask my aunt about this - she will know as her mind is as sharp as a tack.

Zumbagirl - for snacks, I like the new crispy Wheat Thins with a little cheddar cheese spread, or good old chips and dip.  I eat lots of fruit, especially during those nasty taste days.  To me, it seems the more liquid I take in, the sooner the nasty taste is gone.  So grapes, cherries, watermelon, blueberries, strawberries - they all work for me. And of course, apples are now in season so I'll be eating lots of apples with good cheddar.

I hope you had some sliced motz cheese and balsamic vinegar with a drizzle of EVO on that Tomato Basil salad.  I had a lot of basil this year but my tomato plants got the blight.

Hi Ladies, I've been reading your yummy recipes for a few weeks and thought I'd chime in. I have a bumper crop of yellow pear and sweet 100 cherry tomatoes as well as basil (all grown on my tiny patio). This recipe just screams summer:

Yellow and red cherry or pear tomatoes, halved if they are on the larger side

Handful of basil julienned or torn in to small pieces

    Fresh mozzarella, cubed

    Salt and pepper

Good quality extra virgin olive oil

    Balsamic vinegar( just a splash)

Mix all ingredients together and marinate for at least 1hour before serving. If you have leftover French or Italian bread, rub with garlic and olive oil, cube it and toast it in the oven before tossing with the rest of the salad. -Caryn

I spent the last 3 hours trying to catch up on all your posts with some interruptions from hubby, I really enjoyed reading about all your adventures getting through the storms and how you all handled it so well. I couldnt get on this site while i was gone (cell phone limited) So really worred about you all.

We got back around 4 pm today, we were to tired to drive back last night and didnt want to drive the 2 hours home, so we spent the night at the airport hotel. I feel like i can sleep for a week, I need a vacation from my vacation.  Last Saturday when we arrived in ky all our friends were at the pound (friends restaurant) waiting for us, it was very emotional,.last time i saw them i had no hair, now it is to my shoulders, Sunday we all had a pool party, about 40 people, went out on freinds boat monday, tuesday was girls night out, about 15 of us, we all laughed till we cryed, Wednesday, went to evansville, Indiana with friends to the casino spent the night, had a great time but didnt win any money!! Thursday went to several winerys on the way back. Had a party at another friends house thursday night, then Friday had a going away party at the pound- lot of tears and laughter, I got so many parting gifts from friends i had to go buy another small suitcase LOL! We drank and ate so much i feel sorry for my poor body, it just anint used to this kind of behavior!  Somehow hubby got in his golf while there and he also bought a new set of golf clubs. All i can say is it was fun but soooo glad to be back, felt like i was gone for a month, I know im leaving so much out but my brain cells are dead at the monemt LOL! the weather was hot about 100 everyday- Nice to be back in cooler weather!

When i was at the casino in evansville i was sitting in a 2 seat machine, a lady sat next to me, somehow we started talking and the subject of breast cancer came up, she is stage 4 with bone cancer, she had never heard of bco.org told her about the support she can get here and how wonderful everyone is, she was happy to hear about it and said she would check it out, i hope she does she was a sweet lady, and in need of some support and comfort- Funny how you run into people that are more than coincedences,

exbroxgirl- Your salad sounds yummy- I was born in san jose, califronia but havnt been there for years.

Have a safe and fun labor day!!

Deborye - oh yes, EVOO, balsamic, mozarella, salt and fresh ground pepper along with the tomatoes and basil.

Debbie - sounds like you had an absolutely wonderful trip!  You can rest for a couple of days and you'll be good as new!  Funny about your DH buying new golf clubs, what is with these guys?  Golf clubs are not cheap, and they seem to think they need new ones every couple of years.

I went to bed before 10 last night, I was really tired.  Up and at 'em this morning, though.  We girls are going to Foxwoods and we will have a good time.  I just ate my Greek yogurt with blackberries and blueberries.  That's get me started off the right way.  Too bad I'm off even a single drink for the next few weeks...I'll have to go "virgin" so I can carry around something other than a glass of water.

Hope everyone has a great Labor Day!

michelle and laurie  i have never heard of the groton you  are talking about.  so interesting, not sure if i could sell it in this house.  I love the herb recipe though and gonna make some, there is nothing worse than trying to put together a soup or stew and not having the right seasonings on hand.

Michelle  My Dh and I are heading to Foxwoods tomorrow for a convention for our business.  He has gone every year and I have always had to work, so this is my year to go along.  We willl be there tues through Thurs.

Went to an house warming picnic at my brothers yesterday and all the food was soo good, maybe just because he did all the cooking and it was a break from me doing it.  My sister-in-law has not seen me since visiting me in the hosp after my surgery and she started crying when talking about that day...ha ha must be I looked pretty bad!

Debbie sounds like you had a blast of a vacation! We had a lot of labor day parties as well and last night we just crashed and put in the movie Toy story 3 and was asleep by 9.

Lynn18 - i do not have a good recipe (that i want to use) for tamales.  I did actually go and help make them for a New Year's celebration in MEXICO.. yes, Mexico.  My cousin in laws live in El Paso.. Three wonderful women who married my nephews who settle there.  One of their mothers was busy making tamales while everyone else partied at a casino thing.  I offered to go help the mother (I can't even remember her name altho it was something like Esmerelda..

I got to her house a two story, almost Victorian thing of past grandeur in Juarez and went in and the kitchen was a mess.  It is such a huge process.  one has to blend (by hand the lard with the cornmeal, and cook the meat and shred it.  'Momita' was using a mixer to blend the lard and cornmeal and the safety pin on her pants broke and her pants fell down.  i helped her pull up her pants, but we were both laughing so hard we almost died of crying.  .. and of course there was a language barrier that prevented us from sharing details.

We then had to smear the cornmeal mixture on the corn husks, drop the spicy meat mixture upon it and roll it up and put it in the huge steamer.. tons of work. but they were omg delicious.

I wouldn't want to use so much lard in my recipe and am thinking of making a type of cornmeal polenta casserole with cheese on top and served with a green chili salsa.  with less lard.. i don't know if i could make a steamer large enough to steam all i want to make if I wrapped them.

I used to know of a church that i played at that would assemble the ladies who would make 1000s and sell them... i could not wait for 'tamale days'.

They are good for a reason and the reason is all the fat they put in them.

Debbie, welcome back! Sounds like the partying is still continuing. So glad you had such a nice time.

I am back from a couple of days down the jersey shore. Had a great time. Went out to eat every night. Had pizza twice, but countered that with broiled salmon and broiled flounder on the other nights, so all is well, right? And only had one ice cream cone on the boardwalk. Did over indulge in the pound of fudge we brought home though. Think I'll bring the other pound to the chemo nurses at my Herceptin on Wednesday. My DD wants to keep it, but I'll probably eat most of it if I do. And I think the chemo nurses would enjoy it. Enjoy labor day everyone.

OMG, Debbie!  I read this recipe and my blood sugar just broke through the ozone layer...LOL!  And funny response from DH on the golf clubs!  When we used to bowl, it seemed the guys were always buying new bowling balls.  When I asked why, the answer was "I rolled all the strikes out of my old one!"  My bowling ball was so old it still had my initials from my first marriage, and I had been remarried for 20 years...LOL!!!

We are home from Foxwoods with a little less cash but a few more good memories!  And my daughter (age 30) ran in to one of her professors, who has pretty much guaranteed her a job when she graduates in December (accounting major).  He asked her if she would be interested in working for a non-profit in Washington, DC, and he also said he is working on a job for her at a CPA firm in Concord, NH.  So SHE was the big winner!  And then we ran in to him again in the parking garage, so the fates were with her today.  She will see him at the school's job fair on Friday.  Being an older student with 4.0 GPA and graduating in December instead of May looks like it's going to work out very well for her.  She wasn't going to go with us today because she is really short on cash, but Mom took care of her.  Looks like it was a very good investment!!!

That is so wonderful for your daughter Michelle! I think it is a pretty tough market out there, so that makes it even more impressive. I am an accountant too, I hope your daughter will like the profession. It is quite a difference to choose between a CPA firm and working for a non profit, not to mention the different locations, so your daughter will have quite a choice to make.

Debbie, that is funny. I guess it's a good thing you found out before you tried the recipe.

Last night, I went to Fridays in NJ and met a few women from the website for dinner. It was a lot of fun. One of them, ChrissyB came all the way from Australia. They have a nice 3 course meal for ?16.99. I had a salad, salmon, and Oreo ice cream. I am almost to the point of liking salmon. LOL. It was actually very good, but the conversation was better.

Kay - I have been following the ChrissyB thread...what an adventure for her!  And it is so cool that she will meet lots of BCO gals along her journey.  I like salmon but DH won't go near it, so I never cook it.    I am guessing that my daughter would choose the CPA firm because she was explaining that there are some impending rule changes for getting your CPA and she wants to be "grandfathered" into the old rules.  She worked in accounting for a small company in Kansas before deciding to go get her degree, so she definitely knows what she wants.  But there would be a sense of adventure in going to DC, so we'll see.  I'm betting that the CPA firm would be her choice because she wouldn't want to be that far away.  She might change her mind if things continue to go OK for me.  I'd love her to spread her wings and choose a little adventure.  We'll see...the pay will have to be right and non profits don't usually pay that well.

It's going to be raining most of the week, which means I'm going to try and do not much of anything except a little cleaning.  My grandson's 8th birthday party was supposed to be held the weekend Irene made her appearance.  So it's rescheduled for here on Saturday.  The long-range forecast looks perfect - sunny and 77.

I am home alone today...DH went to play in some golf tournament event that will consume the whole day and includes dinner tonight. He hunted down his rain suit because it's not supposed to be nice at all. I will have the whole day to do as little as I want. So my day will be R&R. I need to make one 15 minute trip to get some generic Prilosec as I took my last one yesterday. Otherwise, I'm gonna be a sluggo!

Carrie - good luck at the casino!   Will you be there for 3 days?  If so, be a winner!!!

Guess who came home about an hour after he left?  Yup,  the "not going to be canceled" golf tournament was canceled!   He made me hot dogs for lunch...lol.  Luckily there were some cukes and peppers left over from Saturday that I also ate.  Thinking about apple pie right now, not sure if I'll do it now or save it for after dinner.  Hmmm, speaking of dinner....wasn't planning on him for dinner.  I don't think he'll want Greek yogurt with berries even if it is followed by apple pie.  Should be interesting to see what he comes up with!

My new Kindle arrived today.  No sun to give it a good test outside, though. It is a tiny, lightweight little thing.  I really am a techno-junkie and really disappointed that I could find no good use for the Android tablet that DH got me for Christmas.  He was about 6 months too early and the thing won't play a movie and has crappy battery life.  Such an unfortunate purchase.  Oh well...going to relax and finish a book I started on my netbook, now on my Kindle.

was going stir crazy being home for 6 days, so yesterday around 2pm I drove 30 min, to visit my aunt, and walk around her town, I had a major sweet tooth, and had a litlle piece of gourmet carrot cake, a little piece of fudge, two pieces of sea foam candy, ( for those of you that don't know what that is, its amazing. Whipped honey comb dipped in chocolate :O) and for dinner later, I had a halibut fish burger and amazing fries, so it wasn't my normal eat healthy day, but my taste is down, and I wanted some yummy stuff that I could actually taste Tongue out

Debbie - ROFLMAO!!!  I'm going to assume you were serious when you asked...a Kindle is an eReader - a way to carry around a whole library of books in a little 6 x 9 device that you can actually use in the sun while sitting by a pool.  Kindle is Amazon's version, there are thousands of free or very inexpensive books, plus you can read newspapers, magazines, whatever else on it.  The battery lasts for weeks.

    Kindle Video

It comes with built-in wifi and 3-G signal so you can download a book in just a few seconds anywhere that has cell service or anywhere that has wifi.

Zumbagirl - I know what you mean about eating things that taste good!   All things in moderation, right?

    Michelle
