Ruth, nice saying, and Stormy, I haven't started yet because there is no electricity because of the storm on the east coast.  I think I've resigned myself.  It probably won't be the hardest thing I've ever done. Hoping. Knowing.  Let's go over to the  Sept rads section, K?

I am finishing my second week of radiation treatment.  So far so good although it is still early in the treatment.  I apply pure aloe gel on the entire breast twice a day.  I also apply powder under the breast in the morning before my treatment.  I am hoping not to have any nasty side effects.  I wish you well on your journey to health.

It hurts after 2 sessions.  It feels warm to the touch and tender even when I'm sitting here.  I thought this wasn't supposed to happen.  I already feels like a bad sunburn but this skin is ok. I don't want to scare anyone, but has this happened to anyone else?  I'm fair.  I hate the sun and always wear 30 sunblock and have for years.

Hi Bedo, glad to hear you started.  I have very fair skin too!!  I thank my Irish decent.  Anyway, I had the warm feeling throughout treatment.  Toward the end of treatment I was given a cream called silvadene (sp?)  It was a prescription cream, very expensive.  When the skin became pretty tender, this cream cleared the issue within days.  Be careful though, it stains everything.  An all cotton white tee-shirt vs. bra really helped too.  If you look at some of the rads threads, they can offer all kinds of advice to get through the next couple of weeks.  You're doing great!!  Get some rest and enjoy your long weekend.  I'm with you every step of the way.

I got a bunch of fans of all sizes. I had a little lap fan and when I was sitting around watching TV, I would have it blowing under my shirt right on my boob. At night, I would sleep with a large fan trained right on that area.

    Thanks Ruth!

Now I have a really hard question!

I have been vegetarian since age 16, a loooong time ago.  I am to eat 70-80- gms of protein a day during radiation?! The thought of eating well, animals makes  me sick. Sorry guys, the rest of the family eats meat and I totally understand.  I have lost 12 pounds in about 2 months and the thought of anything but hard boiled eggs, ice cream and ginger ale makes me sick. Maybe from the AI?  Who knows, maybe stress.  How can I get that much protien? I can't cak down the "Boost" that my daugher bought me even holding my nose. Peanut butter is Ok, I guess. Any other protein drinks that are not icky?  Thanks for your advice!

I found this information on protein. I don't know if you eat fish, but included information on it. Hope some things will sound tasty!

    Fish

    • Most fish fillets or steaks are about 22 grams of protein for 3 ½ oz (100 grams) of cooked fish, or 6 grams per ounce
    • Tuna, 6 oz can - 40 grams of protein

    Eggs and Dairy

    • Egg, large - 6 grams protein
    • Milk, 1 cup - 8 grams
    • Cottage cheese, ½ cup - 15 grams
    • Yogurt, 1 cup - usually 8-12 grams, check label
    • Soft cheeses (Mozzarella, Brie, Camembert) - 6 grams per oz
    • Medium cheeses (Cheddar, Swiss) - 7 or 8 grams per oz
    • Hard cheeses (Parmesan) - 10 grams per oz

    Beans

    • Most beans (black, pinto, lentils, etc) about 7-10 grams protein per half cup of cooked beans
    • Soy beans, ½ cup cooked - 14 grams protein
    • Split peas, ½ cup cooked - 8 grams

    Nuts and Seeds

    • Peanut butter, 2 Tablespoons - 8 grams protein
    • Almonds, ¼ cup - 8 grams
    • Peanuts, ¼ cup - 9 grams
    • Cashews, ¼ cup - 5 grams
    • Pecans, ¼ cup - 2.5 grams
    • Sunflower seeds, ¼ cup - 6 grams
    • Pumpkin seeds, ¼ cup - 8 grams

Thank you soooo much.  I will be the cottage cheese poster girl.  Maybe make a mustache out of it... or not. There are lots of farms around here that treat their animals  well..  :) I know, I'm a big weirdo and I don't judge others who have different ideas than I do.  Others help in so many ways that I don't.

If you could force yourself to choke down some tuna fish along with that cottage cheese, you would have it made Undecided.

I hate tofu, but I sometimes put it in other foods. It can go into scrambled eggs, smoothies, and in sauces. I've even baked it into cookies and waffles.

A lot of the meat analogs are made from tofu, and some of them are pretty good. I don't eat a lot of meat analogs, but I believe some of them contain as much protein as actual meat does.

Is it OK to eat tofu?  Is is estrogen-like?  When I asked my surgeon, she asked if I ate it and I said, "No.",she said, "good." but I've gotten so many conflicting answers from every one on my team I don't know what to do!  D"oh!

    Thanks!

PS, I choked down a fillet of fish at Mcdonalds today!  I was hungry and I thought it would taste good. I've lost 14 pounds now in about 2 months. Not a big girl, not a little one, about 5'6 1/2 now and 142. I think it's been a year since I ate fish.  Now I have truely turned into Sybil I will try all your suggestions.  My friend, Julie is helping me. Thank you again for all your help.  I don't want to hog the board. Could the AI be making me feel nauseaus?

I wouldn't eat extra tofu. The jury is still out on it, and it is better to err on the side of caution. Sometimes I mix up tuna with some lite mayo, Dijon mustard, slivered almonds and cranberries, and eat in on a spinach salad.

Probably all the stress is what's making you nauseous. Here is my suggestion: this weekend decide NOt to focus on all of it; eat what you want, go and do things you enjoy.....go out to lunch with friends, get a massage, go buy some new clothes or jewelry or a purse, volunteer at the Humane Society, take a long walk, whatever would be fun and distracting. Focus on other things for a few days and give yourself a little break.

Bedo, I am fair also and did not burn at all. I used emu oil 2-3 times a day. Maybe you could try that.

Someone used this expression, "You don't have to be brave, you just have to show up."

I think it was Bon, she went through the works last summer.  I keep that saying in mind when the going gets tough.

Hang in there, the end is in sight!

I had to drive 100 miles one way for mine! THAT was the tiring part of it. Luckily all my friends volunteered to take turns driving me, and I got many free lunches out of the whole thing too. It's only 6 weeks out of the whole rest of our lives; so even if it is a big hassle, as it was in my case, it is well worth it to do everything possible so that we never have to play this game again!

Aloha, I am in the same boat. I can't get my physicians to address the long term effects of radiation which include leukemia and sarcoma.  I have been researching the newest data on using oncotype to predict logoregional recurrence which is what radiation addresses.  According to that, I only have a 4-5% risk of local recurrence but my radiation oncologist insists the rate is 20% or greater. ARG!  I am T3N0M0 Estrogen/prog + HR -  7 cm tumor size.    One day I am ready to go for the radiation and the next I am terrified of the side effects.  Heavy decision.

There is a trial going on using curcumin to reduce the skin side effects of radiation.  It's an antiinflamatory that may reduce the effects.

Just read through this thread and it is so where I am right now.  Went for a "consultation" appointment last week, which turned out to really be an intake appointment.  ALL the staff acted like radiation was a done deal, didn't even see the doc until almost the end of the appointment.  Felt like he blew off all my concerns about long term side effects.  At one point, when I expressed concern over heart damage, his response was "well you already did the Adriamycin, that was risky to your heart"  as if I'm just living on the edge, so may as well go all the way.

I actually cancelled my simulation/planning appt for next week.  Decided to get a 2nd opinion before I go through with it.  I'm just really not clear why rads is needed. . . . all biopsied lymph nodes are negative, but the rads onc says "well if you took out ALL the nodes, I'm sure some were positive in there". . . . so why'd we do the bx then?  Several other concerns like that.

My 2nd opinion doc wants all sorts of records though, not sure how to go about all that.  Hoping that I can get some answers from the 2nd doc that I can understand!

5 kids, that's just horrible. I hate it when they pretend the long term effects aren't real! A RO did the same thing to me and I was outta there.

IMO a RO who thinks there might have been some cancer in other nodes has got something wrong with him. Have you reported this comment to your BS? If I were you, I would. That's a terrible thing to say, and it undermines the BS.

Regarding records: the doctor should provide some forms for you to use to get records. But if s/he doesn't, you can make up a little form yourself. Go to this page and use it as a template. All you need is a statement of what's needed, to whom the info should be sent (they usually prefer to fax it), identification info about yourself (including your DOB), and your signature.

cycle-path  thanks for the link. . . . the one thing I'm worried about obtaining is the pathology slides from my surgery.  I clarified with the 2nd doc, and he wants the actual slides so HIS pathology people can look at them.  I'm praying that the one lab can talk to the other and make that happen.  Not something they can fax kwim?

I haven't done anything about this RO, just met him last Friday, and if I do have to do the rads, will have to go through his office or pay out of pocket.  Like to keep everyone happy till I'm done with the office, then I start the reporting.

Makanaaloha-Didn't know about the oncotype being used to predict regional local reoccurances. I reluctantly did RADs but it seems like the local regional occurances could be found & potentially trated(most of them).Mostly I think of it as an indication for chemo. Could you provide a link to this study. I'm interested. Thanks

I liked my RADs center & RO. Good thing because there isn't another RADs center within an hours drive. I could swirch doctors, there were 4 to chose from.

I loved my radiologist; he explained everything thoroughly, was EXCITED if I asked questions, and drew all over a whiteboard to illustrate his points. After chemo, I thought that radiation was a breeze and the technology is so precise now that one would rarely have 'collateral' damage. As I never, ever want to play this game again; I was grateful to minimize the chance that I will ever have to......and radiation was part of that risk reduction.

The cancer was on my left breast and putting me at risk for heart and lung damage let alone a few years down the road coming up with sarcoma caused from the radiation itsself.

I had a very slow growing sort of the old lady cancer at 57.  I wonder what you ladies with the left breast involvement feel about the heart and lungs at risk.

    thank you

Mine was on the left also. I had no problems at the time and none now, over four years later. I was stage II with a grade 3 though; so mine was an agressive, fast growing tumor which came out of nowhere. It would have been very foolish for me to have skipped radiation.

I am a five kids mom too.  I started reading this thread because rads may be my next step.  I have my post surgery appt. tomorrow.
About your records:  I saw two doctors in different medical facilities.  I ran around and picked up copies of my films from my radiology office.  These are YOUR reports and you are entitled to complete film copies and all the paper reports.  You can keep a set for yourself if you want.  My radiologist did not charge for additional copies.
About the glass slides:  I called the first hospital's pathology department to see if they were done with them.  Then I made arrangements to pick them up and drop them at the next doctor's pathology department.  For the glass slides only, I had to sign a form saying that I would deliver them to a physician.  The reason, I believe, is that the glass slides contain biologic material which probably needs to be properly handled and stored.
Bottom line - ask for your records.  If it takes too long to have them sent, then pick them up if you can and deliver them personally.  that really helped speed things up for me.
Note: When you present your films or slides to a facility, they will do radiology or pathology tests which are going to billed to your account. My insurance paid for all THREE pathology analyses on the same slide. It depends on your coverage if you have it.
    Good luck with all.
    Joan
