Natural Deodorant
Has anyone found a good natural deodorant? I have tried the one made by crystal (solid and roll on). I have also tried one from Lavanilla Factory. It worked for awhile but lately it doesn't seem to be as good. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have used Tom's of Maine and also have read that many times, simply using peroxide or which hazel helps. I also have had good results with just washing a few times a day with Sea Breeze antiseptic. Also nutribiotic which I picked up at the health food store.

Terra works well enough...especially in the winter or when you are not exercising.

I never thought I had an odor problem until I tried the solid deodorants. They never work for me(chemical or natural). But I've had good luck Kiss My Face's roll on "Liquid Crystal." I found a travel size at one of my healthy-food stores, so you could try it for a buck or so. FWIW, during rads my nurse recommended corn starch. I guess it works but it was too messy for me.
Edit: the correct name is "Liquid Rock".

Unfortunately, all the ones I thought were healthy and worked (Weleda's spray deodorant, and LUSH aramaco) were actually pretty toxic when checked on cosmeticdatabase. I am still hunting for good protection. I'm not the kind of gal who can get away with wearing nothing.

I use Tom's of Maine and like it. I started using it during Rads and I notice over time my body has adjusted to it. I do not produce near the underarm odor that I use to with the strong deod.

I use the crystal- theres a spray bottle form overall it seems to work well although i swear because of my lymph node removal I barely sweat on the one side under the arm-not sure if that is a good or bad thing as it relates to lymphedema- which I knock on wood dont have any issues with. The rest of my arm does get sweaty if Im working out so not too concerned.

Thanks to all that responded. I have tried one of the Toms but I think the Crystal may work a little better for me. Maybe I will try a different version of Toms to see how that does. I have not heard of liquid rock but I will definitely look for it. Thanks again!

I use the Crystal solid and it works most of the time - but I have noticed it's not as good in these hot summer months. I also swab under my armpit with rubbing alcohol sometimes. I was wondering though - I only get odor on the non-BC side now! Is it possible they stripped out all the stinky sweat glands during my axillary node dissection?
-
minkie I was wondering the same thing- infact I don't even think I sweat on the bc side!

I use a crystal deodorant. You have to wet the crystal and rub it on. I'd say the crystal is going to last for a long time as its not being dissolved very quickly. Because you have to rub it on, fairly vigorously, it is a bit irritating. I wonder if this would be an added issue if you have had axillary lymph node dissecton? My wife tells me she doesn't think she sweats the same on the side that had the lymph nodes removed. I've heard of surgery specifically aimed at removing the sweat glands, so maybe its a surgical side effect?
-
I had one lymph node taken from both sides. I don't feel like I really sweat too much there but I feel like there is definite odor when I don't use a deodorant with anti-persperant. I notice it much more now than I did this past winter. I have tried the crystal solid, roll-on, and spray. Maybe I need to just keep it with me and apply more often?

nothing works for me with the sweating under the bad arm.it does not smell at all but i am sticky all the time..I told the BS and she said try corn starch.im using it about 5x a day and im still sticky.I use Toms of Maine under the other arm and it works fine.just wonderng if this is the new normal????????

I became very afraid of deoderants after discovering my lump even before my diagnosis.
I had read that washing and then apple cider vinegar stopped any odor for 12 hours. I found apple cider vinegar too much, but have gone to washing 2-3 times a day (when I get up/ mid-day if needed/in shower at night) and then patting my underarms with cotton squares soaked in white vinegar (clearer/cleaner feeling to me) and after it dries, I like to rub Johnson and Johnson baby lotion (that I have alwasy used even as an adult) on.
Although sometimes meds make me sweat more, so far, this has been working nicely. It's more of a chore than just using deoderant, which kept me clean smelling all day, but I just can't face risking the little things that might make a difference if I can find alternatives.
And it is so important to us to smell nice and feminine.

Johnson & Johnsons naturals have sterates and alcohol....I dont call that natural.I think ill just stick with the corn starch 5x a day...hope the winter works better then the summer. Please sistas read the labels...it is soooo fustrating and the worst part is that the DRs dont make a big deal of it.Good luck.

I still like the baby lotion. :-D Smells so good and feels gentle. Alcohol in creams I was told is okay after the radiation clears. Most creams -even from Whole Foods- have alcohol in them.
Don't know what sterates are or why they should be considered bad. (Open to learning more???)
Found this article and they seemed harmless enough -better than the metals in deoderant anyway:
"What What Are the Benefits of Magnesium Stearate to Humans?0 CommentsJun 14, 2011 | By Jessica McCahonWhat What Are the Benefits of Magnesium Stearate to Humans? Photo Credit health supplement pills image by weim from Fotolia.comMagnesium stearate is a compound of magnesium salt and stearic acid, which is a saturated fat found in many foods, says WorldwideHealth.com. It is often used in dietary supplements and cosmetic products and is generally considered to be safe. While magnesium stearate delivers a number of benefits, it is important to use this product with caution--especially if you are taking other medication or prone to allergies--and check with your doctor that it is safe for you to use.Dietary BenefitsMagnesium stearate is used in dietary supplements because your body can easily convert it into monounsaturated fat--of the kind found in olive oil---and it does not raise levels of harmful cholesterol in your bloodstream, says WorldwideHealth.com. It is also a natural lubricant that prevents other ingredients in a supplement from clumping together.Thyroid Problems? Finally get a correct diagnosis! Visit Our Local Office-Free Eval ChronicityInc.comSponsored LinksBlended CosmeticsThe anti-coagulating properties in magnesium stearate also make it a common ingredient in cosmetics as it helps products such as foundation, lip gloss and mascara from separating into liquid and oil, says CosmeticsInfo.org. It is also used in perfumes, deodorants and hair care products. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel has deemed magnesium stearate safe to use in cosmetics and fragrances. However, some skin types may have a sensitivity to it, so be aware of any adverse symptoms, such as rash, redness or itchiness, that appear when wearing or using products containing this ingredient.PrecautionsMagnesium stearate is found naturally in cocoa and is found in high quantities in most chocolate bars, says WorldwideHealth.com. By comparison, the amount found in most supplements is relatively low. However there is an argument that using it in supplements provides no real benefit to your body and may cause toxicity if ingested in high quantities, says the Wellsphere website. Also, have learned a new trick too: was prescribed Magnesium supplements (for regular use and for consipation due to pain meds) and guess what, it eliminates much if not all of BO!
FWIT, I am a happy camper to be smelling feminine and using gentler- and hopefully healthier than deoderants- ways of staying fresh.
