How do I feel?

It's been six day after my unilateral mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with a tissue expander.  It went well and my team of doctors and staff was phenomenal.  I can't imagine going through this and not getting quality care with love and compassion.  I stayed in the hospital for two nights and have been home since Saturday evening.

How do I feel?  I've been controling the pain with pain medication and its been bearable, but emotionally I don't know what I feel exactly.  I can't seem to wrap my head around the fact that this is really happening to me.   I seem to have this feeling of having a knot in my stomach.

Next week, I get my pathology results and hoping for the best but being realistic that anything can happen.

What was recovery like for any of you?

Becca,  it gets better.  I had the same journey as you, uni-mx with TE's but had the pleasure of staying in hospital for 4 nights - lucky me, I got a fever and had to stay around a while longer. The first week/10 days was bad because I was dealing with those darn drains but once they came out life got better. You have been experiencing a life changing event - and when you get that path report back and all is well - no change in dx - you'll feel better. But, just so you know, from here on out you'll see docs regularly and wonder if every ache/pain is the C returning (in my case, it's been age catching up with me). After a while that worry subsides a bit too.  Hope you feel better soon. The emotions are the hardest part - but you'll get there.

    J9W,

Thank you for your response.  Your words do bring me some encouragement and remind me that  I will feel better.

I did get the pathology results and  the cancer was contained and I had clean margins of 5mm.  I will not need hormone therapy or radiation. After getting the results, I began to get a slight headache.  Later, at home, it became a full blown migraine.  I suffer from migraines and hadn't had one this bad in a long time.  My husband and I were afraid it was something else besides a migraine.  I ended up in emergency and to our relief it was "only" a migraine.  It's different now how any symptom I may feel is associated with my breast cancer.

Tomorrow I see my plastic surgeon and I hope the drain will be removed.  I'm weaning off the pain meds and hopefully by next week I can have the option to drive.

    Smile Becca

I got horrible "after surgery" headaches.  I thought it was a reaction to all the stuff they give you--like a hangover.  Also, pain medicine causes constipation, and constipation can give you headaches.  I am glad you are feeling better.
