So...whats for dinner?

I will be visiting my DD during the Christmas holidays, she lives in Bermuda now, used to live in Merrimack NH.
That's her in the picture with me.

Well power is still out. I guess it was too much rain or maybe a downed tree. It is still raining and there is some wind, but it doesn't seem that bad. The biggest problem will be if there are so many outages getting to them all will take time. I am in a very populated area so hole illy it will be high on the list to fix.
-
Deborye - I go through Chelmsford all the time! One daughter lives in Acton, one lives on the Manchester/Hooksett line, one son lives in Candia and one lives in Merrimack. I am extremely jealous of your upcoming trip to Bermuda. I have wanted to go there for a very long time, and I think my DH would love it because of the fabulous golf. We love fine dining, of which I hear there is an abundance, and I love beautiful beaches. It seems to have everything, and it's not that far away from here. It's going to happen... And oh, we went to the Glenview Grille on 3A in No. Chelmsford last weekend. When we lived in Litchfield (20-something years ago), we belonged to a bowling league and someone in our "crowd" introduced us to the Glenview and its $8.99 prime rib dinner. Well, we went back and the place hasn't changed a bit on the inside. The price is now $11.99, but the portion was huge and it was cooked perfectly. I'm sure we'll be going back frequently as it is an unbeatable deal.
Chabba - glad your brother in Virginia is OK. I have a niece and family in Virginia (military) and they are ok but based on her Facebook post (candles, wine and beer) from last night, I'm guessing they lost power.
Kay - hope your power is back this morning and all is OK.
DH may get his favorite breakfast this morning - baked apple pancake. He's still asleep and I'm going to let him. It always amazes me that he can sleep a very long time. Mostly I'm just jealous because I haven't been able to do that in years, even with the help of a sleeping pill! Seven hours and I am done!
Surprise, he's up!
Stay safe, everyone!
Michelle
-
Kay- I hope you're doing ok.
Michelle- Love the prime rib story! It's nice when some things don't change. I lived in Litchfield until I was 4. Such a small world at times.
I really hope we don't lose power today. I'm getting ready to make a big breakfast for us. Pancakes, eggs bacon etc. I'm also hoping to make some banana bread in a bit too.
I hope everyone is doing ok.
-
Just checking in from NY (south-central)....
So far we're doing OK. LOTS of rain and wind overnight and we lost a piece of fascia from the roof eave (that was flapping in the wind half the night) but, we still have power and from what I can see, minor flooding in low lying areas in town....
Talked with my sister in Albany (further east than I am) and they are without power and, while they are OK so far as flooding, the access to their neighborhood is under water so no travel!
Hope you all to the north and east will come through this with no damage!
Thinking of you all! -
No power here in Southern NH. The fire station is just across the pond, maybe half a mile or so, and they're probably out, too. I would hope that when they are restored, we will also be back up.
DH is bored, so he is going to fire up the generator because he wants to watch tv. I made a comment about power for the fridge and he said that the fridge would be ok for a few hours. But HE will not be ok if he doesn't have his tv...LOL!!!!! I wonder how many channels we can get if the cable is out. This will be fun!
Michelle
-
I guess a transformer blew out right across the pond. Our neighbor was out getting lake water for toilet flushing and said that she saw it happen. We did hear the fire trucks go out, sirens blazing, and quickly stop. So I guess they responded, saw what it was and went back to the station.
It's not raining at the moment and the wind is not much of anything. I've been in worse thunderstorms in Kansas City! Glad Irene wore herself out before she got here.
-
Still have power here, cleaned and filled my hurricane lamps for nothin. Oh Well. I'm bored.
-
We lost power too it seems the storm is about done though. I will agree with being bored! Michelle my husband and your husband sound to be about the same. We have access to a generator, but need to hook it up, well my brother needs to hook it up! My concern is losing food in the fridge, and feeding the kids. It will be an adventure today... My almost 4 year has not stopped talking and asking questions since he got up. Ide love to read a book.
Thinking of all of you. -
SouthWESTERN NH (Sullivan county) is mostly OK. It's just like a big bad rainstorm for me; just windy and rainy but (so far) no downed trees or power issues. 20 mins south of me and more rural -- where my Pack Rat and his cousins live -- they ARE having a few downed trees and power issues. But they own generators, they'll be OK. All in all, for us at least, the hype was worse than the actual storm has been, so far.
I'm still eating way weird (the combinations my body craves of late is basically getting even stranger than some of the things I already mentioned, if you can believe that), and unpredictably and not cooking any real food to really have anything interesting, meaningful, useful or on-topic to say in a food thread (my Pack Rat and I got pizza Friday night). And I'm sleeping a lot (I slept till 1:30 PM today!). Hope this all is just my body's way of healing up from radiation poisoning. (Oh did I mention? right after 25/33 I had to stop treatment because I ended up with second degree burns?)......
Hope you all are as OK as possible!
-
Lena- I am so glad that the storm asn't too bad out your way. We had a few trees come down, but no property damage thank goodness. My brother brought us a generator and got us hooked up so we have lights, water and cable. I can't use the stove and we don't have hot water, but I'm still very excited! It sounds like the rads are really draining you, I'm sorry you are having such a hard time. I remember when my mother had rads it made her very tired by the end as well, I also remember the burns she got. I hope they gave you something to help with the burns, but wow, that just sucks. I hope you have a relaxing night.
Where all our neighbors have no power we are having a few of them over so they can be in light for a little while and their kids can watch tv and play with someone elses toys. Where we can't use the stove we are just going to grill everything. Everyone is bringing some sort of meat to grill and share and we have tons of fresh veggies from the garden and potatoes. So, it should be a bit of chaos, but fun and I know they will all appreciate using our house until bed time the same way I would have appreciated it. I am waiting for my youngest to wake up from his nap and then they will all head over.
-
Lena,
Glad to hear things near you are OK! Sorry to hear about radiation! I know by the end my skin was pretty burned and hurt like heck but, the radiation nurse said that my skin had actually held up well! Also, I had extreme fatigue an it stuck around for a few weeks after....
Rest when you can!
Laurie, What a nice thing to do for your neighbors!!
To all... Looks like how bad the storm was depends very much on where you are.... We're still doing OK but, my sister called on her cell phone... She's in Albany... No power and tons of trees down. She said it looks like a war zone.
Weather Channel says flooding in some upstate NY areas is catastophic. National Guard out of Ilinois has been called to assist.
Yikes!! -
Got our power back. Not much damage in my neighborhood, but some bad flooding around the city. We got almost 6 inches of rain here. They were predicting it to bee worse though.
-
Yeah! We have power. Our daughter called around 5:30 and asked us to meet them all at a Chinese Restaurant, so we left, had dinner and just walked in the door to...lights!!! I hope the power stays on, it's windier now than it was all day. We maybe got 3 inches of rain and it really was never all that bad. I thought it looked like upstate NY would get a ton of rain, so I am not surprised. You could see really heavy rain bands all the up to Syracuse.
Laurie - block party! Great idea and so nice of you! Sounds like you have a great neighborhood.
Lena - hope you are healing from the rads. I hate hearing those horror stories...you have to wonder why some people burn so badly and others just get a little red. I guess it's the same thing with sunburns, you just don't think about it.
I wonder how Kay is doing...
Hope everyone is having a good evening.
Michelle
-
Kay and Michelle,
Yay for power being restored!! Wow, Kay, That's a TON of rain in a short period of time!
Glad to hear things are getting back to normal for everyone! -
Sat in upstate NY was beautiful and our carribean party was great fun. My daughter and I went to the grocery store and kind of dreamed up a pasta dish that would be carribean inspired....orzo pasta, mango, red onion, cucumber, black beans, fresh cilantro and a sesame ginger dsg (bottled made by our local grocery store Wegmans) everyone loved it and it disappeared.
Sunday very windy and cold but not a lot of rain. Daughter left to go back to the city, we didnt want her to go but her boyfriend really needed to get to job on Mon. Travel was all good on the main roads and there was power when she got home. She said just a lot of debris in the streets, and of course they need to get the transit system back up and running so she can get to work today.
Now to get ready for my son to come home this weekend. told me he expects some good home cooking.
-
Tonight my DH is taking me out for dinner. He dosen't like restaruants but since today is my birthday he will go.
-
-
Thank You Deb!

Happy Birthday Chabba! I hope you are enjoying your birthday dinner right this very minute!
Long day today, I spent it all at my mom's. FairPoint was scheduled to show up to turn on her phone service some time between 8 and 5. Geez, that's a pretty wide window, and the guy didn't show up until 3:00 or so. He made a phone call on mom's new phone and said "you're all set." What he failed to tell me is that the line isn't fully provisioned, so I spent another hour trying to program all the family phone numbers, which are all long distance. And nothing worked. I finally recognized the pattern of failure and gave up, and called them when I got home. That's when I was told that the line wouldn't be fully provisioned until midnight tonight. What a stupid process!!!
And I spent an hour in discussion with the director of my mom's facility. I am guessing mom will get top-notch attention for at least the next week or two...lol. And I think the communication in the nursing department will improve. And while I was there, the psych NP came in and so I got to meet her. She is very nice and she agreed to start mom on the anti-depressants this evening. I hope it gets rid of the panic attacks, we'll see.
I did go out for lunch, had some great French onion soup and salad. Then I took mom for ice cream and we shopped for a few things she needed. And I made peace with her former roommate. So all in all, it was a productive day. Now I am mentally exhausted...LOL!
Dinner is each "man" for himself, all two of us! We have some leftovers in the fridge and they need to be cleared out. And I'm not hungry yet, but Rick was starved - he worked on a remodeling project at my daughter's house all day.
Laurie - are you still running on a generator? If so, this is just like camping, right? Except you have your beds!
Michelle
-
Dinner tonight is Honey BBQ Tyson Chicken and Rice a Roni.
-
Happy Birthday Chabba!
Michelle it sounds like a long tiring day. Glad you got things accomplished though. I'm sure your mom is too. I had a very long yucky day myself. I'll admit all this house stuff has me exhausted. And not having an oven is a PITA. Thank God for our neighbors who got their power back. It meant hot showers for us and baths for the boys. Plus they fed our kids while we showered and sent us home with left over pulled pork for sandwiches. They were a life saver.
I hope the rest of you ladies are making out ok. -
Laurie - have they given you any idea when you might get power back? Many years ago my oven broke and we had to wait for a part. I remember baking a birthday cake for one of my kids in an electric frying pan. I got very creative with what I could "bake" in that pan!!! At this point, you should pack up your camper and head off for the campground - it probably has power and would be way more fun...LOL! You could probably use the "getaway from it all!"
Michelle
-
Michelle- You are right- I could cook dinner in the camper! The kids today asked me for pasta for lunch. I told them I couldn't boil water. Ok. Grilled cheese. Sorry the top of the stove doesn't work. Chicken nuggets? Sorry no oven.
My son actually said- I guess I'll have peanut butter AGAIN.
It will all work out though. Hopefully sooner rather than later. As for if they gave me any idea- yes. This afternoon, it is now past 12-
So I am guessing whenever. As far as baking a cake in a pan....WOW! Half the time I bake a cake in the oven it doesn't turn out right, I am impressed!

Laurie I went through a 3 mo kitchen renovation with no stove. i had a hot plate type thing for my stovetop, but had the mocrowave, and the grill.
I taught my kids to make grilled cheese (when they were too young to use the stove) by making toast, butter it, put the cheese on and microwave for about 30sec, whala instant grilled cheese. not quite the nice fried one on the stove, but they could do it themselves.
Michelle. your mom is so lucky to have you, not all children take the time to care for their parents, or to even visit when they are placed in a home. My parents are still with us and pretty self sufficient, but my dad had two hip replacements and my mom had her knees done..so all of us kids got together (5 of us) and remodeled their house to make it handicapped accessible, new bathroom, widened some doors new kitchen cabinets etc....very lg project but worth it . Since the cancer my mom still wants to take care of me...ha ha ..always a mom!
-
Carrie - my sister lives less than 5 minutes from my mom's place and hasn't visited or called, or checked on her at all. I hear you. Of course, she hasn't called or checked on me, either. I'm not holding out any hope that it will ever change. She'll show up at mom's funeral. What a great thing you did for your parents!
I think my kids would do something like that for us. They've been awesome through this whole ordeal and I think it's brought us all closer together...well yes, both physically (because we moved) and emotionally. Some good comes of all this.

Seaside Memories,
It is 1/4 cup of the prepared kind of mustard, not the powder. I prefer it with honey mustard but dijon works good too. A hearty, grainy mustard might also work, but not the regular yellow stuff. It mixes with the brown sugar and makes a night glaze.
-
Home from the marathon chemo session #6 - a full 6 hours by the time all is said and done! I will get Neulasta tomorrow as WBC went from 12 to 3. The PA wasn't going to order it, but I was pretty insistent as it seems I had a pretty big drop and I don't have 9 points left to cover this treatment, let alone 2 more. I must say that they really listen to and address my concerns!
One of my daughters came home with us and is staying for dinner. She wants DH to make grilled pizza so that is the plan. I probably won't eat that much anyways.
Doing well, sitting on my sofa relaxing!

Steaks on the grill, real (hopefully fluffy) baked potatoes with sour cream and chives, caesar salad, and apple pie from the apple farm we just discovered that is five minutes from our house...that's what's for dinner! Tomorrow morning Rick has promised to go back to the apple farm at 11:00 and pick up a few fresh blueberry muffins made with the little deep blue Maine wild blueberries. They bake them in the morning and have them ready to go around 11. This place just opened, literally 5 minutes away. All local products - honey, jams and preserves, pies, freshly picked apples, pumpkins..mmm!
I love this place more and more every single day!!!
