phytoestrogens
Hi out there! I just finished 6 weeks of radiation and am getting ready to return to work in the next two weeks. Like most of you, I spend a lot of time researching on the Internet but it is so overwhelming. I am wondering what your opinions are on phytoestrogens. I have read that estrogen positive cancer likes these and that I should not only avoid soy but also legumes, ie lentils, peanut butter and I have also read that I should avoid flax. I ate these foods more than four times a week pre-diagnosis. Any views would be greatly appreciated.

There seem to be a lot of conflicting information on this. My MO told me that natural forms of soy are OK, but to avoid the supplements. She basically said I could eat anything a Japanese woman would eat. That goes along with the information on the main site has to say in its reducing risk page.

Thanks for your input. I will have a look at this page. I have ordered A Dietitian's Cancer Story as recommended by some others on here. I think it is going to be valuable. I have had a hard time finding a dietitian who has a strong background in working with women who have had breast cancer.

In the "for what it is worth" category, I have been a walking talking heart attack or stroke waiting to happen for a couple of decades. Way before bc, when the menopause hot flashes hit with a vengence - as bad or worse than the threads you see from women on AI's, I started asking questions. When I asked my doctors on the cardiac side, they said that hormone replacement and the phytoestrogens were both high risk. My onc in effect said the jury is still out but that Japanese women eat a lot of soy and they are low risk for bc. My bc was very high ER+/PR+ so I feel soy is a risk I'm not willing to take.
