awwww to those with kids moving out, I still miss my girls under my roof!
Harley, hang in there girl, I know what you're going through - I had the hip pain thing a couple years ago and thus was bone scanned - Negative results! Sending Positive Vibes that you will be just fine. PT and yoga stretches really helped me. Your headaches are probably from the worrying.
-
Hi Kari! Both girls gone as of today. Lost both in 2 days... Wahhhhhhhhh!!!!
Diane, The younger one is at the University of NC at Wilmington (beach). The older one just graduated from another NC university (App state) and is off today headerd to Oregon for 11 months to do an AmeriCorps gig.
Today is slated for Cross trainer. 45. there I said it, now I must do it. ha!
-
A little giggle...well I giggle now...last night I went to a yoga class and after much fun in the Downward Dog position, my foob slipped out and bumped me on my chin! I freaked out and think I said something out loud, scrambled to get it back in...the remainder of the class I was paranoid! This has happened before in a swimming pool (now I have pockets sewn in my suits) and in exercise classes, it shifts in my tops. stupid foob! haha
Spring, WAHHHH away, I hear ya sista!
-
Oh K! LMAO - My two boys are slipping away from me too and I couldn't be sadder - one is moving about a 100 miles away in Sept and one joining the pararescue program in the Air Force in October. They are my life - but I guess that is what happens when they grow up. I've never lived more than 4 miles from my mom an dad - except college - always a baby I guess. I wish they took after me!
-
Ellie, awwwww that stinks that your boys are moving away! WAHHHHHHHHHH
-
Here is to all of us moms who did a great job raising their kids to be wonderful productive students, citizens and sweet children.
-
Diane, amen to that!
OK, so last night I spray painted 4 chairs for daughter and didn't do the elliptical! ack! But tonight, after work, I spray painted a desk we got at good will over lunch for daughter, then filled all my pill trays, and then I did 45 on the elliptical too!! Very busy now!
Yougest DD is in her own appt now off campus, and we are bringing another van load of stuff to her Friday. So much to do!!
I wonder if I am causing myself cancer with this Rustoleum spray paint I am using. Ugh. At least I am outside in the yard...
-
We used the spray paint to in our other house, but DH did all of the spraying. Turns out great!
-
Has anyone ever done rustoleum for cabinets? My friend told me the kits turn out really cool and my kitchen cupboards are ugly and beat up- anything would be an improvement - I walked an hour yesterday and it was hot - about killed me - I am a wuss - but I did it - that is the main thing!
-
Hmmm no rustoleum on the cabinets, but we've done lots of other stuff! NO I am the wuss, I did only 15 min last night, was getting too dark, but it was way too hot earlier so I had to wait!!!!
-
I hear ya on the heat, Kari! I've been getting in about 45-50 mins of walking each a.m. this week, but coming back drenched with sweat. And today my truncal LE is acting up. It's just way too hot!
For the empty nesters... enjoy it while you can.
In this day and age, most of them come back after college!
Ellie, I haven't tried rustoleum, but what I did do a few years ago to get my kitchen painted without spending a fortune was to barter. I found a professional painter who wanted to trade his services for a very nice pool table we no longer wanted. It worked out beautifully for both of us. I think I found him on Craig'sList. Deanna
PS ~ Harley, how are you doing? Are you okay???
-
Just have to work tomorrow then a LONG VACATION!!!! I am gong to bike and walk every day to make up for this "low moving" week! What a job getting ready to go! Cripes!
-
Looks like everyone's busy this week with back-to-college stuff, vacations, etc. We were in Phoenix for 3 days that included an app't. at the Mayo Clinic for something DH wanted an opinion from them on. Boy, is that place impressive! So big & busy, yet so calming and everything amazingly on time. Then yesterday I was in Temecula, working on my antique space. So not much structured walking for me this week, although I did get out just now for about 50 mins. It hit 117 here yesterday and is on track for a similar high today, plus it's extremely humid to boot. Needless to say, I sweated out a lot of toxins, including Tuesday's b'day cheesecake.
This summer's desert heat is so unforgiving. As I was walking this a.m., I had a hard time shaking the thought of 2 European visitors who sadly did not survive what must have been a car breakdown in nearby Joshua Tree National Park this week. You just can't be out in this kind of heat for any length of time without a lot of water.
Well, hope everyone is having a good week and safe from the pending storm! I'm going into UCLA early tomorrow morning for my 3-year mammo & check up. On the one hand, I feel so well taken care of there; but it's hard not to feel a bit of anxiety just being in that building. Deanna
-
Hope everyone's doing well. Deanna, what is the temp when you walk? If its 117 for a high the low can't be that low...YIKES!! Be careful out there. So sad about the visitors with the breakdown, I hadn't heard of that. Good luck tomorrowwith your mammo/checkup. I know exactly what you mean about a bit of anxiety. Happens to me every 4 months when I see my onc. I'm still trying to catch up from a 4 day weekend - babysitting, driving, family gathering, wedding on the beach in Carmel....I'm Pooped! LOL Did mall-walk at lunch twice this week. My DH surprised me with a cool cruiser bike, so maybe I'll taker her out for a spin tonight.
-
Deanna- I will think about you and will pray that tomorrow all goes well and smoothly. I had to take an Ativan on Monday when I went to see my breast surgeon.I had a breakdown in the morning. I know the feeling, we all do, I think.....
By the way, today is a year that I had my mastectomy. I had an ice cream today and actually went for an hour walk to get the ice cream, but I have to admit that I have been a bit lazy recently. Not much exercising, aside from riding my bike back and forth to work. Instead, I go to the beach on my day-offs. It relaxes me and makes me happy. But I will get back to my exercise routine after Labor Day.
I did not hear about the tourists either. It is very sad. But some people just don't have common sense. Yes, I am getting ready for the storm that is coming this way.First an earthquake this week, now a hurricane!
-
Kari - what a nice hubby you have. A cool cruiser? Wow! Lucky you!
-
117!!! Deanna!! That is amazing that you can do any walking!
Survivorwoman - if you're gonig to have an icecream, not a bad idea to take an hour walk to get it!!
Congratulations on reaching your 1 year MX anniversary... hang in there.
Kari, hope your check up was good!!
We have been on vacation and the heat is not as bad as it typically is here at this time of year. It's been high 80s or low 90s. We rode bikes for 2 hours Monday - Thursday so far. Lots of eating too, but hopefully staying "even" with all the exercise. My legs are so pooped out!
Hurricante coming to the east coast. My daughter has decided to stay in her apartment with her roomie - they are not mandatory evacuation. I hope she'll be okay! I told her not to go food shopping and fill up her refrigerator before the storm! Electricity loss = food loss!
-
Survivor - my one year mark was an emotional time, we try and be so brave yet we are scared at the same time. Are you on Facebook?? Do you have to see your breast surgeon anymore? I saw mine one time, I think my 3 month followup, then he cut me loose, said my onc could arrange whatever I needed.
I actually got out last night, even though I was pooped, and rode Betty (Bike's name is Betty) for 18 minutes, woohoo, LOL! It was getting dark. I found myself smiling and waving to people, it was great! I really miss those yoga classes and I missed our neighborhood Pi-Yo class on Monday, I was so bummed. Need to keep strengthening. Had to go to my chiro Wed and back tomorrow. Last weekend did me in! YIKES
Spring, been thinking of you while you are on vacation. Glad you are still able to get out and enjoy with Irene lurking. Hope your DD is OK!! One of our coworkers is in South Carolina moving his kids into college right now, they've always been home schooled and never away from their nest. East Coast is a far cry from West Coast. When I was married at 20 and moved to North Carolina (1st hubby was in Army) from California, it was complete culture shock for me!
Harley, you ok??
Thinking of everyone else, report in, even just to say hi!! KEEP MOVING!!
-
cycled again today, hurricane be damned!!! Got caught in a torrent at the very end, but it was worth it!!
Good for you cycling Kari!!! it all starts with 18 minutes!!!
-
I was just listening to Piers Morgan interviewing several weather experts about the incoming storm. Boy, it sure sounds scary, and it sounds like 3 or 4 on this thread (Joy, Spring, Survivor, Harley... anyone else?) are in its path. I wish there was something we could do besides pray! If there is, please let us know!
I had a really good morning @ UCLA. Mammo wasn't bad at all this time. I've finally learned to speak up if it's pulling on my skin or muscle before they squish all the way! And my wonderful BS said everything looks fine, and that I don't need to return until next August.
One thing that happened that you all will get better than anyone... Even though I thought I was taking this app't. in stride, I must have been more worried than I realized, because when I arrived @ UCLA I somehow managed to park in a restricted parking space, which I never noticed, so came back to a $60 ticket on my car. I was dumbfounded that I'd been so preoccupied that I'd missed any sign or markings, but beyond that, all I could think was... "So, big deal... I got a parking ticket... so what? Compared to what could have happened (a bad mammo or other finding), it's no big deal." BC does weird things to our thinking!
Congrats on your one-year mammo anniversary, survivor! Ice cream sounds like the perfect way to celebrate!
Glad you're having fun with Betty, Kari! Hopefully, riding won't be at all hard on your back. Deanna

Hi everyone - I just found this thread and am hoping to join. I am looking for some motivation for exercise and healthy living. I have exercised almost daily for 5 years but seem to have lost my motivation. Or maybe it's the habit I've lost. I have some fatigue too and have been busy trying to maintain the house, kids, etc. UMX was June 30th. TE pain is lessening too which is good. This looked like a postive place to be. Getting tired now of the little pity parties, esp. when I have so much to be grateful for. So three goals: exercise, at least 30 mins. daily, fewer sweets (which I crave) and much less red wine. Had gotten in the habit of a glass or two in the evening before bedtime to relax, seemed to help me sleep. Also DBF loves a glass when we go out to dinner. A fourth goal: Positive Thinking! Thanks everyone. I didn't read this whole thread - quite long! - but you seem like a nice supportive group of women. Blessings and stay safe with this weather!! Am going off to ride my bike now!
-
All,
Joy left a message on my phone to give an update on how she's doing with the hurricane. She said they are without power, but are okay! Just reporting in!! They expect to be without power until maybe the middle of next week. She'll report in when she can.
Leaving to drive home tomorrow. Did 6 days in a row of biking of 2 hours a day! Today just shopped and walked, sort of a "day of rest".
Mybee, welcome! you will find support and love here!! You have good goals!

Deanna, Kari, and everyone...
I have the results from the bone scan NED
The ct of the chest was Negative
The ct of the cervical spine showed ADVANCED ARTHRITIS
I think this is being caused by the Tamoxifen and I am now considering stopping it...
see, I took Tamoxifen for 2 years then I took Femara for 1 year. Now I am back on Tamoxifen due to 'significant bone loss' on Femara...
The way I see it, The Femara caused bone loss and the Tamoxifen now is trying to build bone, but.... it is causing these growths in the (Femerons sp?) These are the holes in our spine that the nerves go thru... and now the holes are getting NARROW...
I really do think it is being caused by the drugs... I only have just over 1 year left.
What do you gals think?
Harley
-
Harley, you must feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off your shoulders!!! I'm soooo happy to hear your NED dx!!! But, wow, advanced arthritis! No wonder you've been in pain and so worried!
As far as Tamoxifen goes, I've never heard of it building bone. Are you sure that's what's causing the growths? If it is, then I'd probably be content with having taken it for 4 years, and maybe look into one of the natural estrogen modulators going forward. But if the info' you've gotten so far is from a radiologist and/or your onc or BS, then it sounds like you might benefit from seeing a spine doctor for more help with both the arthritis and nerve problem. JMO...
Welcome, Molly! It sounds like you're less than 2 mos. out from a mx, so I'm not surprised that you're out of your normal exercise routine! And I think it's great that you're even thinking about exercising already!
Glad the storm didn't ruin your vaca, Spring! And thanks for the update from Joy! Deanna
-
Hey there Molly! Welcome to the group!
Deanna,
You are SO RIGHT! I was convinced I had bone mets... At time, it feels like my whole body hurts!
I haven't really gotten much info. yet... just my primary care dr., who has been NO HELP at all... He suggested I continue with the Ibuprofen, but other women tell me about some other drugs that may be better with helping with this pain.
I don't think I will get my onc. to admit that the Tamoxifen might be causing any of this... I have read that Femara and the AIs cause bone LOSS, but Tamoxifen MAY help older women, to protect their bones. So... I just interpret that to mean that it may help to build bone... and I know Tamoxifen caused me to have uterine polyps, and I think any kind of 'growths' may be caused by that wicked drug! I will do some more research, but I think IF there is any connection, the oncologists and other experts will cover it up...
Hope everyone survived Irene without too much damage. We only had some much needed rain and some wind... and cooler temperatures don't hurt, either...
Harley

Harley, YAY!!!!!!!!!!! NED!!!!!!!!!!!! Push push push your dr. to do more than ibuprofen - I switched dr's and the new one sent me to Physical Therapy and Acupuncture and she said if I still had trouble she would send me to the spine clinic. So PUSH them to offer more than take drugs. I have arthritis in my back also. I would have a good talk with my onc before making any decisions on whether or not to stop taking an AI or Tamox. Hugs
Welcome Molly! love your name
I've heard TE can be painful, wondering if your exercise has to be modified to accommodate the expander? I love your attitude and look forward to getting toknow you better. We motivate one another for sure. We have a 10 minute rule too...if you don't feel like doing anything...give yourself 10 minutes - you may surprise yourself and do more and if not, that's ok, you did 10 minutes!!
Spring, great job on the biking!! Glad you're all safe, and thanks for reporting in for Joy - been thinking of her all weekend.
Deanna - YAY on the clear mammo! drats on the parking ticket, though great attitude and I agree!!
My DH picked up his new cruiser this weekend and we rode 40 minute Sat. night - it was fun! Then it got dark, it was a scorcher this weekend here. I got a much needed massage yesterday, the guy really worked my back and I felt GREAT after, the pain I had in my hips was gone! My chiro, I saw him on Sat. said I'm so tight and I need to strengthen my inner thigs and butt! haha OK will do!
-
Checking in quick, been a not great exercise week, the LE is not happy so I've had to back off a bit with some of what I was doing for a little bit. Just wanted to check in with the East Coast friends, hoping everyone is okay.
Welcome Molly.
Harley, hard decisions. My understanding is Tamoxifen causes bone loss in premenopausal women (normally the estrogen would be hitting and strengthening bone), however in postmenopausal women who normally would have a drop in estrogen the weak estrogen effects of Tamoxifen actually can be slightly helpful. You'll make the decision best for you and whatever it is we'll all be here for you
-
Harley, so glad to hear you are NED, another sister (in my chemo group here on bc.org) found out otherwise... So will rejoice with you that you have arthritis!!!
Home now, drove all day, back to work tomorrow...
-
Thanks for the 'welcomes' everyone. Much appreciated! Well I have fit in three days of bike riding - today only 20 mins. as it was busy, but it's something. I do like your 10 minute rule. The biking should work until we start to get a change in the seasons here. Then it's a bit more challenging!
I'm usually one to take charge of my health care but with these cancer drugs I tend to follow the docs because the alternative is so scary and it's all just so overwhelming. BC itself has been enough for me to try to comprehend! I certainly was scared to take this AI though! Harley - It is great news you are NED. I have arthritis in my right shoulder (pre-dating my AI) and it can really hurt. I was thinking last night about the impact of this BC, as it does change you, and have decided to do a few things to simplify. Still ruminating over this one. That may help with the positive thinking and some of the stress that may have led to the two bouts of cancer within the last 4 years I've experienced - luckily unrelated!! Thanks for the positive words. They are definitely helpful!
-
Miserably hot & humid here. I walked at 9:00 last night and I think it was still over 100. Then this a.m. @ 7:30 it wasn't any better. I should try Kari's mall walking, but the mall is about 10 miles away, so driving there & back seems so time consuming compared to just walking out the door.
That's great that you've been riding your bike each day, Molly!
Glad you're home safely, Spring. And I assume your girls are both okay. Who were you referring to from your chemo group?
Hi, Kate! Sorry about the LE acting up, but so good to see you here!
Kari, lucky you getting a massage -- and such a good one, to boot! Glad something's helping! Deanna
