Morning everyone,  last night was hump night so no cooking, tonight I will do sloppy joes.  Remember your mom making this when you were little?  I dont use the canned or jarred version...use green peppers onions, mustard, ketchup, vinegar and lots of seasonings...when my son is home a little hot sauce gets thrown in there.  corn on the cob from my sisters garden.

Off to the farmers market to score some more tomatos...cant get enough of these!

Deboyre - yes, yes, yes!  Please think about meeting up with us at Pickity Place...maybe early October.

And Laurie and Liz Hoffman - you, too.  And anyone I might have missed, the more the merrier.  We can go on a Saturday or Sunday.

I just changed my Facebook name to Michelle C Hall in Salem, NH.  Hopefully it will make me easier to find.

Starting to think about Hurricane Irene wreaking havoc around here.  We're going to have to bring in the patio furniture, as much as we can, and stack it in the few empty spots in the living room.  DH says if the power goes out, we're heading to a hotel.  We have well water and if the power goes out, there won't be any water!  We can also head to one of our family's houses if they have power and we can get out on the roads.  I think the hotel idea is a pipedream - everyone else without power will be thinking the same thing.  And who knows how far we would have to drive before finding an empty room...lol! I asked him if he wanted me to order a small generator, and he said no. So there you have it. Hopefully, all this will be a big bust and Irene will "take a powder" out to sea!

Carrie - I remember making real sloppy joes, a long time ago.  I might try that again later in the fall.

Zumbagirl - cabbage lasagna? Interesting. DH doesn't like cooked cabbage or sauerkraut or anything that remotely smells like cooked cabbage...no cauliflower either. He is a bit of a fussy guy when it comes to veggies.

Time to get going - moving my mom this afternoon.  I need to program her new telephone for one touch dialing before we head off to her place.  Gonna be a bit of a job but I'm hoping it will be less stressful for her.  God, I hope I don't get dementia.  I think I've paid my dues with diabetes, arthritis and breast cancer.  Hopefully the dementia gene passes me by!

Carrie- I love sloppy joes, i made them alot but not in awhile, funny though i was just thinking about those the other day and i have been trying to think what i was going ot make on our pool party when we get to ky this weekend, that what im going to make (Thank-you) for a great idea!

My brother lives in Virginia.  They had a couple of thing fall and break during the quake.  He is quite worried about Irene.  They are as well prepared as they can be, plenty of emergency supplies, whole house generator with full fuel tank, plywood to cover the windows, loose items from outside brought in, etc.  And they are prepared to evacuate if necessary.  I think they are more aware and ready to prepare because of their training as Red Cross first responders.  He told me last night that Red Cross has already given them their reporting station for after the storm passes.

Needless to say that I'm praying for them and all others in Irene's path.

Debbie- Dinner sounds great enchilada's and avocados!

We had steak on the grill and a new recipe for eggplant, zucchini and tomato casserole with stuffing and cheese mixed in.  It was pretty good.  I would have it again, but my husband said it was good, but didn't seem overly excited about it.

We are supposed to be going camping this weekend, and the whole hurricane has us wondering when it will hit.  I'll also admit that I am nervous about storms now. Lightning, wind- whatever- I want nothing to do with it! Joyce, we are trying to do the same with a generator.  My grandfather was set up with one and he passed away this year.  My brother is supposed to come out and wire our house to be generator ready.  He only lives 3 miles from us and if we both lose power we could share it, you know, take turns the way siblings do, lol!  I am hoping it will have lost most of its strength before it gets here.

Laurie - we were camping at Greenfield State Park many years ago and we were in the middle of a horrible thunderstorm.  Sitting inside the tent on metal framed chairs while a river of water streamed through the inside of the tent.  Suddenly I had an "aha" moment and said we probably shouldn't be sitting in metal chairs in water in a tent held up by metal poles.  So we all got in the car and as we drove away, two sites down, there were ambulances and rescue vehicles - a tree had been struck by lightning and it traveled along the roots to the tires of the RV, blew out the tires and the folks inside were stunned.  They were ok, but I learned my lesson and we always went for a ride if a storm got bad, figuring in the car was better than in the tent.

Phew! We are pooped! We moved my mom into her new space today and got everything set up except her phone, which will get installed on Monday.   The maintenance director will hang all her pictures tomorrow.  This studio apartment is much lighter and brighter than the one she shared, it just seems better. She was a little confused by the changes, but I think she was calming down by the time we took her down for dinner.

We were supposed to cook steaks for dinner, but after getting everything done we decided to go to Carrabba's. Rick loves their steak marsala, I just ordered a salad and then shared a little of his marsala and pasta. My appetite just doesn't warrant spending $20 for a meal and I can save Rick from himself...lol. I do like their house salad and dipping oil for their bread. And their Sicilian Chicken Soup is my "go to" meal in the winter when I have a cold.

I'm not moving off the couch until it's time to go to bed!

Joyce- Sounds like you are pretty prepared, (we need to get a generator) for emergency's like that. I cant believe that first the earthquake and now having to worry about a hurricane- I will be saying prayers for you (All of you)

Chubba- Thank goodness your brother is safe from the earthquake, I can imagine how worried you are right now too-

Laurie- After what you have already gone through i would be to scared to go camping too, Just stay safe, I worry about all of you living there.

Michelle-I always listen to my "Aha" moments or that tiny voice that warns me so glad you did too. (((hugs)))))) for your mom- she is lucky to have you ;)))) I love steak marsala, i make a chx marsala too that is really good, I hope you get rested !

I finished all my packing finally, just last minute stuff tomorrow, we wont leave until after DH comes home from work, then we drive 2 hrs to a hotel by the airport, Saturday we fly out at 6;30 am, i said to him, havint you met me yet? I dont do mornings LOL!  I will probably stay up all night on friday, whats the point in going to bed if we have to be up by 3am- Did i mention I hate to fly? Im one of those white nuckle flyers, my DH leg is bruized by the time we land.Ha!

Again, everyone please stay safe, you are in my thoughts and prayers!

I used to be a nervous flyer, but I've gotten over it.  It's just the only way to get to Hawaii...lol!  I flew a bit for business and while DH loves to drive anywhere in the US, I'm all about hopping a plane and being there in a few hours.  Debbie - might be a good time to take an ativan, after boarding!  My one complaint about flying is that I can never sleep on a plane.  I had never tried a true sleeping aid and the flights to Hawaii were long and boring once everyone else on the plane is sound asleep.  That's especially true on the return flight.  Next time, I'm drugging myself after boarding!

Enjoy the trip, you will have loads of fun!

Tonight we are heading to St. Anthony's Festival in the North End of Boston.  I can't wait, I've always wanted to go but we were never here at the right time.  This is one of the biggest Italian/religious festivals in the country.  I'm going for the food and music, I've heard it's amazing.  I want to have a culinary adventure, sure hope it's all that I think it will be.  And I hope my appetite can get past one piece of pizza...lol!  I'll have to pace myself and take bites of everyone else's selections so I can some variety!  And a cannoli!  Gonna take pictures, too!  I know I am French Canadian and English, but I must have a piec of Italy in me somewhere Tongue out

Thanks for the prayers re Irene. I am a little nervous. We're supposed to get hit pretty hard although the latest forecast was s little more easterly which would help. My fears are my dh is supposed to pick up DD from camp. He is leaving any minute, but not supposed to come back until Sunday. Said he will come back right after her performances to avoid travel on Sunday which is supposed to be really bad, but that would still not be until 9 pm Saturday and it is a 3 and a half hour drive. Hope conditions aren't too bad.

Went to ruby's diner for first time yesterday. Had low carb chicken fajitas. They were really good!

    Be safe everyone.

    Laurie,

Here's a really easy salmon recipe:

Salt and pepper salmon filets and either gril or bake until just beginning to easily flake.  While fish is cooking, mix a glaze of 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 dijon or honey mustard (if using honey mustard, use a bit less brown sugar) and 2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger.  Mix well and spread over the salmon.  Grill a few minutes longer (or broil in the oven) so the glaze carmelizes on the fish.  It is delicious and super easy.  I keep my ginger root in a ziploc in the freezer and just grate (while frozen) however much I need.  It stays fresh for a long time this way.

    Amidala,

That sounds REALLY delicious!! We just had salmon that I topped with some home-made pesto (the basil from my garden is going crazy and I had to use it)... It was really good, but I think I like your idea better! That glaze sounds awesome!

One question though... for the mustard... is it 1/4 cup? or 1/4 tsp? Love anything with ginger!!

    Michelle,

I hope you enjoy the festival!! It sounds awesome!

I love ALL food but, I do have a special fondness for Italian food and I don't have an ounce of Italian in me either! My Mom is half Cuban and my Dad's side mostly German/Scottish...

We went to a Rennaisance Fesival last week-end and that was exactly what my husband and I did... We would order something and share. That way we got to taste more things without getting so full!!

We stayed over-night and left the kids (18 and 22) alone for the first time EVER! They did fine and the house is still standing with no complaints of any parties! We had the nicest dinner out at an Italian place that the hotel recommended...

We both had a dish that had seared scallops, mushrooms and peas over pasta in a vodka cream sauce.... Was just amazing.... Didn't have room for the cannoli (a favorite of mine)!!!

Enjoy the food and have a bit of cannoli for me!!

    zumbagirl,

Cabbage lasagna sounds interesting... Is it anything like cabbage rolls (Halupki)? Could you share the recipe?

    Laurie,

Since I just picked my first EVER eggplant from my garden today and I also have zucchini (more than I care to think about) and tomatoes, would you be willing to share the recipe for your casserole?

Hope you all are making progress on getting things back in order!!

Thinking of you and your family!

Michelle- let us know about the Italian festival, it sounds like heaven!  I am drooling over here!

amidala- Thanks so much for the salmon recipe, I am going to keep trying it different ways, my husband was thrilled that I made him salmon.

Today we were busy going through the contents of the basement and making a big pile of trash.  Sigh...but we are through most of it now which is fantastic and we are having a simple dinner of cheeseburgers and hot dogs with slaw.

I hope everyone had a good day and to all the east coasters-batten down the hatches!  I hope everyone makes it through the storm without anything momentous happening, including me :D

A Dramamine or two and a glass of wine and I didn't care WHAT happened! Just had to make sure that I didn't have any meetings where I had to be worth anything at until the next day...lol!

Enjoy your time away! Hope to hear about your adventure when you return!

Just got back from the festival.  The vendor areas were so close together and crowded, you couldn't even walk down the street!  We left the immediate area because I found the crowds and just standing in line a little too tiring.  We went looking for a pizza shop and stumbled on Pushcart Caffe then we walked over to the Modern Pastry Shop for dessert and cappucino.  I'll be regretting it - the caffeine will keep me up or I'll take my full dose of sleeping pill and hope for the best!

The pizza place was off the beaten path in the North End and has really good Yelp reviews for being fast and friendly.  Well, something went awry and it took almost an hour for us to get ours.  At one point I asked our waitress if our pizza was coming and she said they were really busy.  Then I think she went and checked, and either she forgot to put the order in or they had given it to someone else.  She kept coming back and saying "2 more minutes" then again...like a broken record...lol.  They offered us more drinks on the house, they never told us what happened, but the pizza finally showed up and it was really good.  All in all, we had a good time even though the festival food wasn't quite what I expected or was "up" for.

And of course, anything from the Modern Pastry Shop is absolutely excellent! I don't normally drink coffee in the evening, but I couldn't pass up a cup of real cappucino to go with my cannoli. Well, I ate just a bit of the cannoli as I was pretty much "done" by then! Tomorrow is another day.

For anyone who is a Food Network junkie, the show Sugar High was on earlier tonight and is being repeated at 1:30 a.m. eastern time.  They are featuring desserts from famous Boston shops including the Modern.  We didn't know about it 'til we were waiting in line to get in and there was a sign on the door.  The DVR is now set to record the show, we'll see it some time this weekend.

We still have a few things to do in preparation for whatever size storm will hit us tomorrow and Sunday.  We have a borrowed generator from Joycek, I brought in all the cushions from the patio furniture and DH will batten down the hatches tomorrow morning. Then we will be off to DD's so the guys can work on a remodeling project and I can hang out with the grandkids.

Michelle  how disappointing for the food at the festival, hate it when i get my hopes up for a really good treat and then it isnt what I expected. Love italian food...little Italy in NYC...yum.  Daughter home from NYC just in time to escape the storm

Today we are  expecting wall to wall sunshine.  Carribean party at marina for all us boaters..have a guy coming with a huge smoker/cooker doing jerk chicken and pulled bbq pork.   we will all bring dishes to pass.  The food is always amazing at this event.

    Happy weekend everyone..be safe!

Carrie - I think I was the bigger problem at the festival. I thought I'd be able to handle the crowd and wandering from food tent to food tent, but I really wanted to sit down at a table. And, oh I forgot to mention this part...DH had a horrible workday and he was NOT in a good mood.  I think he would have been happier to not go, but was trying to make me happy.  So when the one and only place at the festival (tables and chairs, beer and pizza) had a very long line and DD and I had taken a "once around" to see what else was available, I decided the best thing to do was go look for a restaurant with an open table.  It turned out just fine - we actually liked the place and we'll probably go back.  So in the end, we "discovered" a little neighborhood restaurant that we would not otherwise have found.

OK, now...all the east coast gals...check in if you can.  DH and I are just getting back from my daughter's house in Acton.  It's just raining, normal rain, no wind, no nothing.  It's not even a heavy rain.  I'm sure all that will change and we are fully prepared for Irene.  What's everyone else doing?

That's still the case in Philly at this point too.  It is raining pretty hard, but the winds don't seem too bad yet.  My biggest worry is all the trees around here.  Hope none of them get knocked down.  Other than that, took in the outside furniture and the trash cans.  Not in an area to worry about flooding.  Keep safe everyone.

Seeing some pretty bad flooding down at the Jersey shore on tv.

My brother in Virginia is OK so far.  He is inland enough to be safe from coastal flooding but they have some localized flooding.  They live on a small hill and just downhill from them are some homes with water already to the door sills from ordinary run off because the storm water drainage system is overwhelmed.

oh no Kay!  Keep us posted via phone if you can.

Michelle, I'm sorry your North End trip didn't end up the way it was planned.  I have a good friend who actually goes to the North End to buy food every year for Christmas Day.  I drool everytime she tells me what she gars and swear I have to get down there.

We made progress today, all the stuff in the back yard that was dragged out of the basement, ruined by water was inventoried and hauled away.  We have put all our patio sets away and gotten everything secured outside and had a tarp put on the chimney.  I am hoping it is not going to hit us too hard.

I agree- lets all try to check in and let everyone know if we are ok.  Right now it is raining here, but nothing abnormal.  We had a long hot sweaty day with the clean up followed by a birthday party at 5:30 for a three year old.  The kids went to bed late, hopefully they will sleep in tomorrow for us.

I hope everyone is doing ok. Take care ladies.
