Teeth Issues Post Chemo
I'm leaving to go get a tooth pulled right now.
I saw a few people say they had this issue but couldn't keep track- so who's had teeth issues after chemo?
Mine SUCK! I'll get into more detail after the extraction

Hey, Melindy! Yep - sign me up in the tooth issues department. Two broken teeth with crowns and now have a third with a crack. The gift that keeps giving.
-
Hi Melinda,
I've had 6 extractions in the past year, two teeth disintegrate to near nothing that have been rebuilt by a fabulous dentist, root canals do not take, bone loss in my jaw, and yet more cavities I need to deal with. Oh yes, and I have a crack across one of my front teeth.
And my poor parents spent so much on the orthodontist!!
-
I have had one tooth extraction, I now have another cavity, and pretty sure I have TMJ. Not sure the TMJ is really considered a tooth problem--but it is a mouth problem. I'm not sure yet if it would be cancer/chemo related as I haven't gone to the dr about it yet.
-
although I am sad you all have these problems, I am happy that I am not alone. One crown already, two more needed (but putting them off until I get my 2012 dental insurance allowance 'cause I've already blown thru the 2011 money), and lots of other issues. Chemo---the gift that keeps on giving.
-
Add me to the list. It was the most expensive tooth in my mouth and they had to pull it during chemo. Huge filling, root canal, crown lengthening, gold croan. And then it had to be pulled! I have had MANY crowns and fillings since chemo.
I hope it all went well this morning, Melinda. Big Hugs!! xox

I have been putting off the dentist but I do need to go. I have dental insurance but I just dread it and insurance will barley touch the work I need done. I hope that all went well today Melinda.
-
I, too, have had many tooth problems in the year since I finished chemo: 2 root canals, crown lengthening, 2 crowns and decay on another 2 teeth. I thought it might be from the chemo, but wasn't sure. Now that I read all these posts, I see that it is.....I don't have dental insurance so the cost is crazy. Does anyone know what the connection is between chemo and these kinds of tooth problems??
-
I'm guessing here, but I believe the connection is that chemo kills all the fast growing cells in your body (since cancer cells are faster than normal cells), and since our mouth is always humming with activity there must be cells that quickly die and regenerate in there. I did hear that our tastebuds regrow very fast, if they did not the first drink of coca cola would render us tasteless for life!
So maybe it is our gums that grow quickly, and they get very weak with chemo? Just a guess, but it owuld make sense.
-
For me when I got done with chemo I had to have a root canal about 6 months later. When I went to the dentist 6 months ago I ws told I needed 7 cavities filled and 2 crowns put on. The dentist did 2 of the cavities and 2 crowns and I've had severe issues with the crown leading up to finally getting it pulled today.
So now I need to get a dental implant placed which that alone is $2k!
The dental assistant said part of it is that chemo depletes the calcium in your teeth. Plus my ooph and I'm screwed.
-
Oh yeah! I hadn't thought about the ooph adding to all of this!
I need to get back to taking my calcium on a regular basis. I'm not so good at that.
-
I'm a dentist and can say that Chemo DOES not deplete any calcium. Most problems post chemo are related to your mouth being dry (xerostomia) - saliva can't buffer the acid as well or us having a different diet (higher sugar) because of the taste changes. Cracks happen from wear and tear - I see them daily....
The potential problem post chemo is for anyone on a bisphophanate - it can cause problems with healing if you have a tooth removed or periodontal surgery.
Best of luck...
Karyn

Melindy, thinking of you today, and hoping you are doing ok. Please Check in.
-
Wow, this is amazing....I had posted in my July chemo group about my problems. I lost 2 crowns in the last few weeks, lost a chunk of bonding and lost a chunk of a filling, all in the last few weeks.
I'm guessing Karyn is pretty spot on, I have been just recently using the biotene to keep my mouth wet, I wake up in the middle of the night with a horribly dry mouth and for the first time in 3 FECs, I had to use the Mary's Magic Mouthwash because I got sores on my tongue and roof of my mouth...never happened before, despite doing baking soda and salt rinses several times a day.
So the chemo does do it, the chemo is drying our bodies out inside and out and then in return, ruining our teeth...it's causing it indirectly.
Keep your mouth salivated!!
xoxoxo to all!

I had a bunch of cavities last year. I'm overdue for my next dental appointment, I just can't face it
-
I too, have had a tooth break, I need to get to thee dentist to have it fixed. Chemo, huh. Wow, I hope I don't have any other teeth break!
-
Lost 8 teeth since starting chemo! Found out that if an Oral Surgeon does the removal, it is covered under major medical. They paid quickly. They bridges etc. Are still under dental and are taking their time with payment.
-
Well it sucks we all have teeth issues but I'm so glad it wasn't just me! I was feeling crappy that I had caused the issues or something!
-
From what I hear, most everyone has some maintenance issues with their teeth after treatment.
Part of it is that they tell you to avoid dental work if possible during chemo as the bacteria that usually live in our mouths is not good for our hearts if we have a compromised immune system, and dental work of any kind can send it into the bloodstream. Myocarditis (a heart infection) is rare, but more serious than waiting to fill a cavity later.
That said, after I finished treatment and waited another couple of months as I was advised, I did the full on periodontal scaling thing and had to fill a few new cavities. All were in areas already filled that got going again during treatment. What chemo does to hair and nails, it also does to gums. A year later, they were normal again, but don't be surprised to find that on your to-do list after treatment.
-
Melindy - is your mouth better?
-
I had $18,000 worh of damage, and on top of that got dx with Sjogren's Syndrome which causes dry mouth/eyes, skin etc, its an auto immune disorder. Apparently I had the Sjogren's before the Chemo and the tandum did a number and still is the dentist was like Shit after finding out about the latest dx. Suppose to have another root canal on a back tooth, I am just going to see if she can pull the thing, my body is sick of the needles, poking and general touching by all the dang specialist.
-
Have had one crown since chemo, need to get two more but waiting on a new year and new dental benefit money for that and yesterday, while enjoying a healthy snack of raw carrots, one of my molars shattered. Off to the dentist tomorrow morning to see if that can be salvaged. Thankfully it's the very back one and I'm hoping it may just have been a wisdom tooth so I can have it pulled and not figure out how to cough up more $ for more tooth repair
