I am just using a surgical pad cushioning around the drain.. With the compression garment, my hips would be super sore and painful without the extra cushioning.

My PS wanted my drain holes dressed too.  They helped me make an incision half way through the pad and then tape the tube to the skin to give it stability.  You probably heard me jumping for joy yesterday when my last tube was pulled.  How many tubes do you have anyway?  6?  I hope some of them come out soon!!  Finding clothing to wear has been tough.  I ended up going to Target and buying a few dresses that were on clearance.  I hate wearing dresses but the yoga pants don't work for me at all.  They really aggravated the very middle point of my ab incision.

Betsy, I do have one last suggestion for you.  If I take Percocet, it just knocks me out and I sleep for hours.  If I take 1/2 of a valium, which is a muscle relaxer according to my PS, it's just enough to relieve that back ache from not standing up straight.  I am actually still taking a 1/2 valium in the afternoon when I start getting tired and am not able to stand up straight.  In addition, my PS said that at some point to switch from Tylenol to Motrin.  Motrin has an anti-inflammatory which will help.  I think I had to be off Percocet for a few days before I could switch though.  Definitely ask your doctor before changing.  Hopefully, you have one more day of feeling like you were hit by a truck and by Saturday you will be feeling better.  When do you get to leave the hospital?

Hi susan... I am suppose to leave sunday, when my friend arrives, BUT she is flying out of Newark airport just as the hurricane is scheduled to reach NJ... So we'll see.

I am not on percocet, but some other pain meds and also flexerall for the back pain.

The yoga pants from target are very very soft with a very wide waistband... They are perfect, but i got the impression they may be discontinuing that style as they had so few.

I have 5 drains... I am hoping to lose my hip drains soon, maybe within the week... I have had them for 5 weeks... Then 2 ab drains and 1 breast drain, and the breast drain has a lot of output, and red...

I got my two abdomen drains out yesterday at 8 days out, but my ps is Pretty liberal with that, only need to be under 30 cc. Still have one breast drain in and it is much redder than the others were and putting out much more too. So glad to be down to one drain. The muse said I have some fat necrosis that is adding to it.

Well ladies, my DH is so excited because I finally get to join the TMI posting club!!!  At 3 1/2 weeks out we finally had our first romantic moment.  Just one more step towards getting back to normal.

Betsy, awwww man, I am wondering if your companion was able to get out of NY or not.  It doesn't look good.  I wish I could come and stay with you.  How does your breast look now?  Does it look like it is surviving and healing this time?  I really hope so!

Sohard and Kay, I think my surgery was about 10 days or so before yours.  I don't feel tight in the morning as much as I used to but as the day goes on, I definitely getter tighter and that's when my back starts killing me.  I usually end up taking 1/2 valium in the afternoon.

I am so surprised.  The tape on my abdomen is almost completely off, I only have three small places where there is still tape and my scabs are nearly gone.  The incisions on my breasts are so small they really look good.  My left breast (immediate reconstruction) is a good bit smaller than my right and it has a very flat spot on the front.  Also, does anyone know if they can give DIEP breasts a little lift in stage 2?

I hope you are all well as well!

Hi susan... My friend did not get out... But another friend is coming in on Tuesday to bring me home on Thursday...in the meantime, enjoying being taken care of at the hospital.

My right breast is MUCH healthier than when I arrived, so it was a success!

My abs are tight, and am more comfortable in the bed than the recliner... I will need to figure it out when I get home...pain killers I think.

For me, my recovery clock has restarted... Had my first hip flap surgery July 21 thinking I'd be back at work mid-Sept, but now with DIEP on Aug 23, it delays things... I am not sure when I'll feel well enough to go to work, but I told my boss not before 4 weeks, and then only partial days... It is what it is... No one counts on complications, certainly not me.

bdavis I have not been on the boards much because my kids and their families are here visiting but I was wondering how you were doing and it sounds like you are doing so much better.  You certainly have had your setbacks.  Hope everything continues to heal well from here on out.

Hi sherry... I have been in the hospital since aug 17th, and this was my second round... My first surgery had me in new orleans july 19-aug 1... So with my friend hopefully flying in from newark this tuesday, i should be home thursday night, with two breasts, and no bleeding, no open wounds, buts a few extra scars... I am ok though... At least my port is out, bacterial infection under control, and hopefully my clot is also gone as well... We'll see.

    Been a busy summer.

Betsy, so glad to hear you are doing better.  I am doing well except for my rads side.  It is very grumpy, still a lot of red along the incision. The botton incision looks the worst, I had some drainage there over the weekend & is making me really nervous.  I called and told them about it, they said it needed to come out.  I go back to the doctor tomorrow, so we will see. Great to hear you are doing so well Betsy. Take your time and let your body heal. I wis you a smooth and uneventful recovery. Anything else would just be too unfair. Sending you good thoughts and healing vibes.

Susan good to hear life is getting back to normal for you. It is so nice to see someone sailing thru recovery. You go girl!

NJ I am worried too. The noob is still swollen. It was very numb, it's starting to get a little sore. That is probably good. All of a sudden it is black and blue though. Not sure about that. I called ps office today to tell them about it. The pa sent her an email about it. I have appt. tomorrow any way with nurse. Should be able to get last drain out. I was told before surgery that I was going to take longer than most to heal since I only finished chemo 3 weeks before sx.

Hoping to hear from shard, my hospital buddy soon.

    Anyone with sx this week?

    Kay,

Is your Noob warm to the touch everywhere?  And do you have capillary refill?  Press lightly in different areas, it should first turn white and then quickly the color should come back.  These things determine if you are getting blood flow.  Make sure you call your PS ASAP if you are not warm everywhere and if there is no capillary refill.

Yes, it is warm and there is capillary refill. It isn't the flap that is bruised, it's the top of breast. My dh said I may have slept on my drain tubes since the bruising seems to be circular. That's possible. I don't know what I did to bruise it, but since it is numb, maybe it is not that surprising. Thanks for the warnings. They did warn me about the capillary refill and that the breast feel warm before leaving hospital, so I did make sure that was okay or would have called or gone to Er over the weekend. It's great to hear input on here from people that have gone through it. Thanks again for the tip.

Kay, sometimes I think the bruising is so deep that it takes a while before we see it.  I didn't think anything of it when I became black and blue on the flap, I thought to myself that they took tissue from my tummy and smushed it into a breast, so it made sense to me that it would bruise.  But when I went to the PS, they were alarmed.  I did have some necrosis.  I wasn't warned about the capillary refill or checking it for warmth everywhere.  I am not sure it would have had any impact if I had known, I think it would have already been too late.  Most of the noob recovered without additional surgery (so far), it is as hard as a rock though and it has been almost 3 months.  I still need to use a dressing and I keep plenty of hydrogen peroxide on hand for bodily fluid stains on my clothes.

Hey Kay, I had something pretty similar to what you are describing.  Above my breast and close to my shoulder a couple of weeks after surgery I turned black and blue.  Actually, I have a hematoma there still where I feel a hard, round knot and it still feels bruised to the touch.

Last night we stopped by my step-daughter's house to drop some stuff off.  Her driveway has a dip in it for drainage and, as my luck would go, we parked right over the dip so the concrete was further away than what I anticipated.  To make a long story short, I more or less fell out of my DH's truck.  My noobs are fine as the incisions were mostly healed but the very middle of my ab incision was not totally healed and I opened about a 1" section up.  I put the prescription antibiotic ointment on it last night and this morning and I guess I will just watch it.  I hope it closes back up and is fine.  I guess I should be happy that it was my ab incision and not my noob incision.  UGH!

Betsy, heal well and I hope everything is going well!

Norma June, please let us know what the PS says today.  I will be waiting to hear.

Susan...I would call the doctor about the incision...I think they would prefer betadine not ointment to help it heal... Ointment will keep it moist... Been there, done that.

Yes, I did freak and my DH did too.  We have been so dang careful.  Unfortunately, I never had a chance to call the dr. today.  My son and daughter in law had their baby at 12:23 this afternoon.  She had some problems breathing and then her WB cell count came back elevated.  She is in the NICU for at least 48 hours.  I am sure you all know what comes to my mind when they start talking about WB cell counts being off.  My incision does look better today though.

How are you Betsy?  You finally get to go home on Thursday, right?

Good news & not as good news.

Good news is the non-rad noob is doing really well, I just have a small area that still needs healing but otherwise good.

Not as good news, I'm one of the few that my incision has opened up along the bottom incision Unfortunely the surgery has really aggrevated the radiatied skin on that side.  Lord know they radiated the cr@p out of that side.  It isn't infected & that's good.  So I just have to keep cleaning & using sivadene cream on it untill it heals in.  As long as it isn't infected, we're good.  That was a big relief for me.

I kind of had that problem with my incision after my mx. I broke it open (non-bc side) & just had to let it heal from the inside out.

Leave it to me to not be "normal" ha! I did get several stitches out on that side so it's good!

Thanks for your concern & support. NJ

Susan... I am actually going home friday...

NJ... When i hear open incision, a whole other picture comes to mind... My open incision started small and just grew and grew and lost half the breast... So stay on top of it, and camp out at your PSs office if need be. I will live in a bubble for a month, as i don't want to go through this again... I didn't do anything wrong the first time, just had compromised skin, but they have now used my hips and abs, nothing left.

So glad to hear from my surgery buddy, Sohardbnme!!!  Good luck with school.  I got my last drain out yesterday at Dr. Wu's office!  It had been 29 for two days, and with estimating the amount, I wasn't sure if they would take it out, but out it came!  The nurse said it was starting to really irritate my skin, so maybe they wanted to get it out for that as well.  It feels much better to be free of drains.  Thanks for the concern about the brusing.  Not sure why or what caused it, but the nurse said it is not unusual and it looks good.  I am done on narcotics because I ran out of them.  LOL  I actually have two more left.  But nurse called in Vicodin.  I don't know what that is.  She said it's in between tylenol and Perkoset?  I haven't been taking much Perkoset so I am not afraid to go off it.

Betsy, good to hear from you too!  Glad you are going home on Friday.  Wishing you uneventful recovery.  I know it must have been frustrating to redo, but it sounds so good to have no fat left.  As long as you don't need it, any way.  My best for everything to go well.

Hi, all. I had my DIEP on August 23 as sceduled..the surgery turned out to be 20 hours long, punctuated by the 5.9 earthquake, the epicenter of which was 50 miles south of where I was. (the earthquake didn't affect the surgery length -- I bruise easily and it took a long time to get the capillariea to connect). Came home on Saturday in the middle of the hurricane. My biggest problem was the narcotic pain meds--morphine made me vomit violently and dilaudid gave me hallucinations. Now I am down to tylenol and am much better.

Hope to get drains (6) out tomorrow... More later. Hope you are doing well, Betsy. Hugs to all.

Yep, 20 hours. BMX took about 2.5 and the rest was DIEP. i am a very free bleeder, but I don't think the doc entirely grasped just how free. He also discovered some abdominal scar tissue that I didn't know I had and don't know where it came from, since I have never had abdominal surgery (not even a baby). My sister, who is 15 years older than I, confirms no surgery. That slowed him down too. On the plus side, noobs seem to be doing fine, ab incision still hurts like hell (the stitches are like pit bulls, only they bite me). One of my drains is down to an unmeasurable 2 drops/day of output. Others higher, but I am hopeful. Thabkfully, I had my last dilaudid Sat. Nite, last tylenol 3 2 days ago. I'm not allowed ibuprofen b/c of the bleeding issues. It was quite a long haul...I was prepared but since I had never had major surgery and had done well with previious o/p procedures, had expected s smoother post-op period. Andthe narcotics gave me hallucinations. Ugh!
