DCIS and Cancer?
I was told that I had DCIS and had surgery last Tuesday. The Dr. called me on Friday and said I had abnormal cells near the margin and outside of the margin. We are hoping that the abnormal cells are DCIS. The speciman was sent off to Boston for evaluation. If not DCIS, the cells are cancer and I will find out results in 10 business days. Has anyone been diagnosed with DCIS and cancer? What were your treatments? Any ideas as to what my options will be? I need advice, comments, ideas.....what I really need is some good news.
Thanks,
Katharine

HI Katherine, if you search by member name Beesie's , she has an excellent article onf DCIS and what it means. I think it will be a great help to you.
Best of luck

DCIS is cancer it's just not invasive. Some DCIS can become invasive and that is where the problem is....no one knows which type will become invasive and which won't. Grade 3 is usually considered the grade that will and it's just a matter of when.

Katharine,
I was diagnosed with a large area DCIS. The area was so large that I knew after the biopsy if it came back as DCIS I would have a mastectomy. I did have a mastectomy and glad I did. Within that area of DCIS they found an area of IDC invasion. It was 4mm. Very depressing to go from thinking you caught it before it became invasive to having invasive cancer. I was Her2+ so I wanted to get the herceptin. I did TCH x 6 and I am now on tamoxifen.
Best wishes,
Michelle

Hi
Good to see someone with a similar diagnosis to me. Were you given the choice of chemo? My pathology report states I have "foci of frank invasion measuring appr. 2-3mm" and am currently decided to do chemo or not. I was HER2+ strongly prositive.
Meeting another oncologist today to try and help me make my decision but I think I will end up doing chemo now. I am struggling to come to terms with it as I started off last March with DCIS only and have had a MX, reconstruction and now eventually trying to deal with having to do chemo.
Would value your opinion on doing chemo versus not doing it if that was a choice you had to make?
