Glad that you came through fine...take care and heal well.
-
sohard glad you are doing great and sitting up. don't run around that nurses station and overdue it.
Betsy-glad you got the dead tissue taken care of. So sorry you now have to go back again and have diep but it will be worth it in the long run. Good luck
-
Sohard, congrats on making it to the other side! Glad to hear you are complication-free and sitting in a chair already!
Betsy, I'm so sorry that you're going through this, but it sounds like you're in good hands. It sounds like they've done the right things to fix it. Fingers crossed for an uneventful DIEP and speedy healing!
L -
Sohard, you go girl!!! I was so upset in the hospital because there was NO WAY I could sit in a chair or walk the day after surgery. I had surgery on Wednesday and other than going to the bathroom I could not sit up, walk or anything until Saturday. I really had to take a deep breath and realize we all heal at our own rate. It sounds to me like you are doing fabulous!! In a couple of days you will be amazed at how good you feel!
Betsy, goodness, I am so sorry. You are going through a lot in a short period of time. As you know, I was totally flipping out before my surgery. The first couple of days are tough because it is so hard to do anything for yourself. After the first couple of days it gets better by leaps and bounds. I am praying hard that this journey gets much smoother for you very, very fast!
Norma Jean, still no news from you. How are you?

Ooops, as usual, I forgot to post something. Today I had a follow up with my local general surgeon who did my first mastectomy. He is the doctor that nearly had a heart attack when I told him I was going to have DIEP surgery. He said I look fabulous. He couldn't believe how good I look at just two weeks out. He was teasing me about my lack of hair on top (I still have the old man hairdo) and he said, "Oh well, with boobs like that no one will notice you are bald." It cracked me up. The downside of that is I still have one stupid hip drain in. My PS said it has to get less than 10 cc's to pull it. UGH!!!!!
Susan
-
@Susan, geez less than 10 cc's isn't much. Your PS is strict. I thought having less than 30 cc's was tough to get to.
SoHard, good going!
Betsy.....poor girl. It seems like it would be pretty rough to have a DIEP when you haven't complely healed from removing tissue on the hips. I might be doing the opposite, having tissue taken from the hips after having failed tissue from the DIEP, but my tummy is healed. Did they take the tissue evenly from your hips? I don't want to achieve even boobs by creating uneven hips....
-
Joy, no way!!! Are you seriously considering having hip flaps done? I had no idea you were considering that. WOW!!! Please keep us posted on your plans. The good part of that is from what I understand healing from the hip flaps is much easier than from DIEP.
I thought the same thing about getting to 10 cc's. I am not sure that is even possible!!! He said that the danger in pulling the tube too soon is that my abdomen is already so tight and further swelling from pulling the tube would make me miserable.
Susan
-
Alex... Hip flaps are a breeze... I have had no pain at all, and they took the same from each side, one flap for each breast... The down side of hip flaps is drains for 6 weeks and wearing a girdle... But you get used to it... I am 4 weeks out and no problems...
The good thing about my diep, i think, is that they only need to supplement, so hopefully i won't be too tight... I probably lost a cup size or two from today's procedure, not the whole thing... My right breast might now be a B/C instead of a D... My ultimate goal is C. -
Bdavis you are in my prayers...
I cannot move around by myself...they are going to take guaze
off insicion in morning and make me walk... Oh I had a fever 101... It is 99 after tylenol... -
Sohard, you GO girl! I can't believe you're posting already! Keep pushing that button for thos pain meds. They'll take them away soon.
Betsy, I'm glad things went well today. I'm sorry there's more to do. It sure has been a journey for you. Take care of yourself and give yourself some down time when this is done. You're going to need to re-group and enjoy normalicy. Meanwhile, I'll be keeping you in my thoughts as you get things fixed up. You'll get there, I know.

I wasn't able to post any more while in the hospital. The computer couldn't get a signal & I couldn't charge my phone. Ugh!
Getting out of bed the first time was really hard but I did it. Getting up the second time wasn't as bad but I thought this woman was going to kill me when they went to help me get back into bed. She let the catheter drop, I reacted & fell back into the bed. Ouch! No damage just sore. I was in ICU until 3 am on thursday & finally made it to a room. I think they just like have me in ICU so this one gal could learn about the DIEP. It took her 2 1/2 hours to do what should have taken about 30 minutes tops. I thought if she doesn't get done soon she will have to start all over again & I was so tired, I just wanted to get some sleep.
It was soooo nice to get disconnected from all the tubes & moniters. I still couldn't get up very well because the bed wouldn't go down all the way to the floor. I have to get my feet under me in order to stand up. My PS removed 2 drains & started the discharge papers, it took almost until noon to get out of there. Couldn't wait to get home.
Got home, got something to eat & crashed in my recliner. The next thing I knew my 10 month old puppy was having some kind of spell. So we ended up going to a clinic to get her checked out. She finally came out of the spell, guessing she had a seizure of some kind. I was so scared. It seems so silly to be worrying about a dog when I just had major surgery.
I wish I could tell what size I am, not as big as I feel like I'm sure.... especially with the swelling. But having no boobs for 3 years, it is a big change. We did figure out how to strip the tubes. I was leaking really bad from the lower drains. The JP drains are much different than the ones I had with the mastectomies.
Sending good thoughts & prayers to those in the process. NJ

Yay Norma June!!! I am so happy to hear from you!! I was the same way. In the hospital my laptop was too dang heavy for me to hold and posting from my phone was a pain in the patooty. Girl, I remember getting out of that bed the first time too. But you are right, it got easier every single time. I am now two weeks and two days out and I feel great! I don't know about you but I LOVE my new boobs!!!

Susan, you and your husband remind me of all the Cialis commercials I've been seeing on TV..."you never know when the moment will hit you..." !!
-
Miss Sohard---I told you that you would fly right on through. Dr. Wu doesn't mess around. Glad to hear you are up and around. Driving will take some time---for now, enjoy being chauffeured around and waited on hand and foot. This is your time to be a princess!!
BDavis: Glad to hear that you were able to get things fixed up. I agree--this is the summer from hell. That just means that every summer following will be SO much better. Keep the faith!
-
Crimson... I am so pleased with results... OMG... God is Merciful...
-
sohard-so glad you are doing good
Norma June glad you are home doing well and sorry about the puppy. I would be the same way. My little dog is my girl and spoiled rotten.
-
Iv and catherder was removed today... I walked around twice... Fever
went down, once I started using the breathing device with ball... I feel good Overall... -
@Susan and Betsy, Yes, I am seriously considering hip flaps. My Noob is rock hard and it has been 2.5 months since my surgery. Betsy it makes sense that they would take from both of your hips for a bilateral but mine is unilateral, so I don't know what the protocol is. It seems like it would be important to have balanced hips and therefore justified to have tissue removed from both but this is something I am going to have to find out. I go back to the PS on Sep 19. I might decide to live with the hard noob for many reasons but I guess I can sum it up by: enough is enough.
-
I think they can soften it... And if your PS can't, i might find one who can...
-
I really don't know what will happen. My PS is very well respected in my area and he is not making any promises that it will soften. He did say he is with me for the long haul, but that one day I may get tired of having a brick on my chest.
-
But isn't there something he can do to soften it?
-
after having the diep 2weeks ago, i notice i cant eat the quantities that i was used to eating before, or i really pay for it with a tight bloated very uncompfortable stomach. yes i am still constipated from the meds, however my meals portions are so small my hubby thinks im dieting or starving myself, has this happened to anyone else?
-
Dontworry, yep!!!! We are two peas in a pod. If I eat a normal portion, I am fine when I eat it but within 30 minutes I am miserable. I am probably eating 1/4 the amount that I used to. The good news is I am losing about 1/2 pounds per day! Woohoo! The only meds I am still on is 1/2 valium in the morning and 1/2 in the late afternoon but I still had to have Miralax this morning. I think you are right and it has to do with the extreme change in diet. Other than that how are you feeling? I am doing much, much better than I anticipated at two weeks out!
Sohard, hooray for no IV's, catheters or fevers. If you are to the place that you are feeling pretty good it gets better and better every day.
Betsy, how are you feeling today? Any sign on fever? You have been on my mind constantly today. I hope you are doing good. You are certainly due for a break from the bad and some smooth sailing!
SueLSU, that cracked me up. With my husband in his 50's you just don't know how true that is!! At two weeks out I am still saying no way Jose! LOL!!!!

Hi susan.. Feeling well today although did have an hour of nausea... But fine... I am mentally preparing myself for my next surgery tuesday... When i have my diep flap.
About appetite... I have so far only had hip flaps and my appetite is much lower, so maybe surgery is an appetite suppressant? And then add in the diep for added suppressant? I will know more about that next week. -
Hello all...been lurking for some time - glad to hear most if not all of you are doing well! Bdavis - I too am having surgery on Tuesday - unilateral mx and immediate diep...getting nervous! Thanks to all who post their tips here...off to buy button down pjs, front snap sports bra and men's tank tops!

Hi everyone! I made it to the other side. Ibam just down the hall from sohard and she looks fantastic! She has a huge, beautiful smile on her face. I am doing great. The day after surgery, I sat up in a chair and it was very difficult getting in and out of bed. Yesterday they removed the catheter and the pain pump. I feel so much freer. Still have an iv for some antibiotics. Walked around the hall a couple of times. They have a walker here which makes it pretty easy. Got up and went to the bathroom all by myself last night, didn't need any help getting in or out of bed. Still pretty sore getting up and down, but I think the premised is working better for me than the pain pump. Going home on Sunday. It is true, I feel a lot better each day. Can't wait to get these 4 drains out and this pain med thing that is hooked right into my incision too. But really feeling great overall.
Betsy, sending you good thoughts that everything will go super smoothly from here on out.
It will be interesting to compare notes with you nj and see how similar our recoveries are.
Crimson, dr. Wu does rock! -
Hi ladies! I have been trying to make an appointment at HUP, but it's very hard when you have to leave a message, and they call back when you step outside for a second! Kay and Sohard, how did you choose Lisa Wu? The implant only PS I saw last week suggested Joseph Serletti.
I am so glad to hear that NJ, Susan, Kay, and Sohard are doing so well! Alex and Betsy, I wish you a speedy and successful recovery.
-
Betsy, my PS says it will either soften or it won't. He doesn't seem to think there is anything to be done about it, other than light massage. I was scheduled for surgery to remove necrosis at one month out but that was cancelled because I was improved. My tissue is alive, just hard.
I am happy to hear that so many are doing well. Keep it up! Betsy....sorry you have to go through more but I hope everything goes great.
-
Thank you... My doctors are great and taking great care of me... They flew me down here and are now flying my friend in to escort me home. They for sure go above and beyond! The hardest part is being away from home for two weeks, again.
-
NormaJean....happy for you. Home. What a great place. I can relate to you also, in that, I too went 3 years without any breasts. I had DIEP 3 years after y diagnosis. It's quite exciting, isn't it. Praying your recovery continues to go well for you. God Bless.
Sohard....happy for you too and that the surgery is all over and you are doing well. Praise God. Praying also your recovery continues to go wll. Blessings.
