What the heck am I supposed to eat!

So the kids are back in school and I again find myself with a lot of time to sit down and read.....not necessarily a good thing.  I have been trying to wrap my head around exactly what being ER positive means.  Some say avoid all soy.  Some say in moderation, as with anything too much of one thing is not good for you.  So then I stumble across this article about avoiding estrogen altogether.  It then goes to to list seasonings, fruits, and vegetables that contain estrogen.  What the heck am I supposed to eat?  Fish and broccoli 3X's a day?  Would really appreciate some common sense input from survivors.

try the foodforbreastcancer.com site for a list of foods for ER+ and PR+.  I kind of use it as a guide.   I aslo found reading  the "Anti Cancer of Way of Life" by David Scribner was a good resource.    We're all on this journey to find what's best for us.

chickadee, I agree with the recommendation to read Anti-Cancer, A New Way of Life.  It's full of great advice.

Re. soy ... what I was told @ UCLA, and what the most recent research supports, is that natural soy products are good for us.  What you need to avoid is soy protein powder isolate, which is soy protein powder (also found in most energy bars and some vegan food products), because it's been modified and concentrated.  Also some women avoid food and supplements that contain soy byproducts & fillers because non-organic soy grown in the US can be both GMO and full of pesticide residue.  But tofu and soy milk, etc., are fine in moderation.

The only estrogenic food I was told to be careful about drinking too much of is grapefruit juice. But, I'm also post menopausal, so you may get somewhat different advice, or you might just feel more comfortable eliminating certain foods.  But the bottom line is, I don't believe an occasional serving of tofu, for example, is going to cause any of us to have a recurrence, and is actually a very healthy source of protein.     Deanna
