    thenewme, you wrote:

    If  Big Pharma and Big Herba are the same "entity," then why is it that one of the basic tenets of the pro-alternative crowd is that Big Pharma is evil and Big Herba is good?

    Since I am not the one making that claim, I don't know. You would probably have to ask that....crowd as you put it. Smile

    And when you say:

    We can absolutely agree on that!  But honestly, who would disagree or argue that statement?  Think about it.

    Who? The people who get upset to the point of "loosing it" and resorting to insults when there is any kind of questioning of the standard of care's usefulness; or when there is any question about intolerable side-effects from medication (and I am not trying to say you are part of that....crowd)

    orange1: indeed, I depend essentially on 2 pharmacist friends for the claim that many pharmaceutical companies also make supplements. Here, I would have to obtain the data from them, if they are right on that point.

    Thanks to Timothy for this site that clearly addresses the main questions we need to be asking  :  *Abstract and key points
    * What is it?
    * Does it work?
    * Is it safe?

    SCIENCE BLOGS- A great collection of blogs on a wide variety of scientific topics!  Always lots of really interesting reading there on anything from alternative/complementary medicine to mathematical piano compilations (really - and quite beautiful too!) to education and politics.

    Julia, You might want to think about volunteering a couple of Saturdays a month to give a massage to women going through treatment that cannot afford to pay for a massage plus gratuity.

    We have an integrative health center in Santa Rosa where practionars offer thier services free of charge to women going through breast cancer treatment and up to 2 months out from treatment.  They have massage, acupuncture, guided imagery, nutrition counseling and other services.  Whole Foods and other organic grocers donate food.  Sometimes a physician will sit in the lobby and answer questions about breast cancer.

    Practionars are strictly forbidden from trying to solicite patients, sell supplements or offer any kind of medical advice.

     If there isn't one in your area, maybe you can look into starting one.

    Dear Yazmin,

    Agree that "Think before you pink group" (www.bcaction.org) is a terrific resource.  They have started webinars that I hope to engage in soon.  For some they may be a strong and opposing voice to your belief system.

    My personal favorites (since I believe that diet and life style have a very strong impact on cancers in America) - especially breast and prostate:

    Jane Plant's book:  Your Life in Your Hands, Understanding Preventing and Overcoming Breast Cancer - I have been following a no dairy diet with only limited amounts of orgnic - no growth hormones or steroids - meat and wild caught fish for over 11 years now after reading her book.

    American Institute of Cancer Researchhttp://www.aicr.org/

    Department of Nutrition - Harvard University School of Public Healthhttp://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/

    The Cancer project:  "The Cancer Project promotes cancer prevention and survival through a better understanding of cancer causes, particularly the link between nutrition and cancer. Through research, education, and advocacy, we are saving lives." http://www.cancerproject.org/

    Best health to everyone!

    That sounds like a wonderful service in your area! There are definitely people who cannot afford to pay for massage. I work at an Integrative Cancer Center in Burbank where we offer discounted massages as well as acupuncture, acupressure, reiki, yoga, stretch classes, etc. to both survivors and the general public. I love working there 2 days/wk and wish there were more integrative centers around!

    "People look to us to:

    Make sense of science and evidence
    Provide quick help and advice
    Make a fuss about things that are wrong
    Represent the public interest in sound science
    Activate networks of scientists and others in defence of evidence

    Our ethos:

    We help people make sense of current discussions rather than taking them back to school
    We stand up for scientific inquiry, free from stigma, intimidation, hysteria or censorship
    We want everyone, whatever their experience, to stand up for evidence in public life"
