Bras Post-Flap Surgery?
I see the Bras 101 thread for implants, but what about tissue flap surgeries? I am 4 months post BMX with tissue flap reconstruction. So far I have mostly been wearing no bra or occasionally a sports bra. Today I decided to go bra shopping. I measured myself and ventured out and came back with nothing! I tried a bunch of different brands, three different sizes, demi cup, push up, full coverage, t-shirt bras, etc etc. I tried on more than 20 bras and only found one that sort of/kind of fitted, but not sure enough to buy it. Have others had this problem? Any tips?

I'm having MX and DIEP on Wednesday, so don't have any answers, but am also interested to see what others have to suggest.

I bought a wireless bra by Warner when it was time to go bra shopping after my diep. Underwire hurt too much for me. My surgery was almost 3 years ago. It's the only bra I buy now.
Warner has a selection of wireless bras.
Good luck finding one!

Thanks, Wonderland. I think I got tired before I got to Warner's so maybe I'll have to try some of those. After reading the other thread, it seems like maybe I need to go to Nordstrom and have them help me. It sounds like they have good fitters and more variety of brands. So maybe that will be my next shopping trip.
Kay, I hope you had a successful surgery today, and have a speedy and smooth recovery.

Your health insurance should help pay for bras-- you have to get a prescription from one of your oncology docs; my Nordtrom's bras fit great but were pricey, but my insurance paid for about 1/2 which helped a lot.
-
Treespite, I will check if my health insurance helps with the cost. That would be fantastic. Thanks.

TwoHobbies, I am curious about why bras are hard to find post DIEP. I am 17 days post DIEP. My PS requires me to wear a surgical bra 24/7 for one month post surgery. Believe it or not, I even have to wear it in the shower. this bra reminds me of a light ace bandage. It gives me some light support.
When I look at my breasts though they seem more oval than round. I think I would have a problem finding a bra that would fit me from armpit to armpit, if that makes any sense. Just curious why others have problems finding bras that fit.

Hi Ladies - I am ~1.5 yrs post bilateral free TRAM (DIEP's poor cousin LOL). Anyway, I too have had bra issues. Best I have found is wacoal's underwire free soft cup bra. I think it is harder to find bras since the belly boobs are not as distensible as the old ones (does that make sense?) and I think part of it is that I am afraid to have something that will injure me on my incision lines...

best wishes to all...

Thanks, Candsmom, I will try Wacoal also. Wonderland, I did a second short trip and tried on a Warner's with no underwire and it was quite comfortable. I didn't buy it yet, but I did write the style down. There was a tiny bit of puckering in one cup but not too bad. In general, I'm finding the front close bras look better, for whatever reason.
Samay, I'm not exactly sure why the bras are giving me problems. I think I've concluded that one side is still a little swollen, although its not that noticeable to me. And it could be that the shape is a little different. So I decided I'm going to wait a little while longer on the bra and then I'll try another search!

I thought I would renew this topic as it is now timely for me. I have not worn a real bra in a long time and just waiting for my newly constructed nipple to heal on my Sgap breast. I think us flappers have different issues than the implant ladies. I am a uni and mine is a bit wider and does not have the same projection as my natural. I read somewhere that European bras might be best. I would really like to stay away from underwires , I am a 34C. Thoughts or ideas ?

I went for a professional fitting (yes, it was awkward the first time when the fitting girl had to leave the dressing room) but then I made calls and found a place that dealt with mastectomy/reconstruction. I found a few great bras in a size (38D) I would have never even considered - i thought I was a 36B/C prior, but maybe had been wearing the wrong size?
I got one underwire and one nice comfy day-time bra. And now that I know the corret size am able to get bras at Target and have them fit great! So - go for a professional fit - it was so worth it.

Thanks Teresa. After my stage 1 Sgap I went to Norstroms to be fitted . I called ahead and made an appointment. I waited over 20minutes and was finally passed on to a young girl in her early twenties. I asked if she had dealt with bc patients before and she said yes. She brought me two bras and both were mastectomy bras with pockets. I cried and she said that is all they had to fit me. So insensitive . I considered writing a letter but didn't want to waste the emotional energy. I guess I need to find a small boutique next time I am in the city.

First I went to Macys and the girl who measured me was young and afraid - it was horrible. Next, to a shop that specialized. The woman was kind, and made me feel totally comfortable, which was a challenge as I was still nipple-less. After nipple recon and tattoo I went to Nordstroms and it was a positive experience. I made sure I told the sales person that I was post recon so she would not freak out. She was calm and professional and took her time. She brought me over 15 bras to try - differenct colors and styles and after each one she helped me the the necessary adjustment to insure proper fit.

What cured my bra problem was a fitting at Nordstrom. Found out I was trying the wrong size. I kept trying 34 C based on my measurements. The bra lady said I needed 32D or 32DD and she was correct. At first it felt so tight but the bras looked great. I have five 32Ds and 2 32DDs and both fit fine. Calvin Klein, Warner's b tempted and Soma are good brands for me.
The Soma lady was also very helpful. I had on a bra style that was the right size but didn't look all that great. I showed it to her on and she brought me another style that looked better.

I went to a nice bra shop and was fitted (was really ticked when the employee just barged into my dressing room though), but the molded cup bras do not fit my SGAP breasts. My best find was a soft cup bra at target for $18! After years as a 32F, I'm done paying $70 for a bra!
-
Technique for more privacy in a bra fitting. Try on a bra and then show the fitter and have her make suggestions. Feel free to kick her out when she brings new sizes until you have tried one on. Although my fitter at Nordstrom had me turn away from her and put them on for me which was also fine.
LA star I can't believe you found a 32F at Target? One of the downsides of 32 larger than C is they are very hard to find at a bargain.

Thanks for renewing Cascader!
I've had the best luck with the Bali Comfort Revolution wire free bra style #3463. It was recommended in another thread. I tried this one in addition to a number of others and this one clearly fit and felt the best of all of them. Best part is they are widely available and fairly inexpensive. I get mine at Kohls.

Thanks Audrella, I just looked at that and it looks like it is comfortable.Think I will try it. I've got one sgap breast and one natural so finding something is difficult. Been living in the Genie bra, but what I really would love is to find something sexy and beautiful
(without wires)

TwoHobbies, it was my original set that were 32F. My new set are more of a D. This is the bra I've been wearing -- so comfy but nice support: http://www.target.com/p/playtex-women-s-wirefree-simply-sized-bra-assorted-colors-patterns/-/A-14505680#prodSlot=large_1_3

Cindy, how'd you make out? I'm 3 1/2 weeks out and found a couple great bras after trying on every underwire free bra that my local Kohls carried, haha.
I agree that the reconstructed breast is wider and doesn't project as much. So it was pretty tough to find something that worked.
Here's what I found - they're SUPER comfortable and fit great! Also underwire free:

It'd be nice to find something in a padded/pushup style for going out too!

Ladies
Your breasts will continually change. After the DIEP in Oct 2013, my breasts were large blobs. I started wearing the stretchy athletic bras in week 4. Within a couple of months they were starting to take shape. In my first revision surgery in Feb, they were lifted and ended up round with no protrusion or tear drop shape. I started wearing real bras that were wireless. I bought several with molded cups. Like you I noticed that none of them fit very well. The ones with molded cups had space at the tip. By the time it was warm enough to wear T shirts and other thin tops, the girls had conformed to the shape of the bras. I like the molded cups because they have a natural shape and are thick enough to hide the crop circles.
I have not bought any expensive bras yet because I have not finished my reconstruction. The girls are not the same size or shape yet. I was lucky enough to buy several bras at a good price because my local Sears was being torn down and everything was reduced by 60 - 75% during the last few weeks. I bought one of every wireless bra that they had in my size. My collection includes Playtex, Bali, Warners, Maidenform, Olga and Hanes.
Good luck

Just bumping this up for activity, hoping for a few more recommendations for not only comfort, but to get rid of the hamburger bun limps I have still after phase 2... also- anyone have a favorite regular compression knee to high waist garment that they like for once you get to stop wearing the surgical one?
