cmblastic - thanks! They originally did do a mammo on the left hand side in December when all this fun began and found cysts, so I guess they want to take a second look at them because I have such *active* breasts.
As for the sugar, cancer cells can't grow without it, but then neither can healthy cells without it. My sister sent me a study where women who limited their alcohol consumption to 1 drink a week had less reoccurrence. I've got it down to 2 beers on Saturday night and boy, oh boy, do I enjoy them!
-
Went and had sonogram done. It showed two areas, one of which had actually gotten smaller since the original films in December! The sonogram tech said that they were most likely fibroadenomas. Talked with the surgeon's office and told them that I want them out and they agreed. MRI this Saturday b/c they messed up my appointment and to get more definitive diagnosis.
-
heavenschild: That's positive news! Sounds like they are being aggressive and taking care of business rather than waiting had causing you undue stress!
-
Huh.....what??? Cabana boy? Beach? Have I dozed off and missed something???
-
Heavenschild-Fantastic news!! I don't blame you, I would want them out too!! One less thing to worry about!!
Marj--just saying if there is a drinking study, it better include a cutie patootie cabana boy. One that really knows how to rub on the sunscreen!
-
Marjie, you're too funny!! Claire, I'm heading to OOB in Maine today, I will scout out a cabana boy for us!!!
Hope everyone is doing well. Wishing you all a peaceful weekend. Quck question, does anyones radiated breast feel like leather undereath?
-
msjag--I'll be waiting for pics of that cabana boy!! My rad site has to be lubed every day. I stopped for awhile (I am 3 months out) and I noticed a definite change in my skin texture. Back to super lube, I use Aquafor still on the rad site. It seems to help keep it soft. Wish the rads tan would fade. Does anyone have a clue how long that lasts?
-
My RO said the tan could be there for a year! I'm having issues with my nipple still peeling and it's still kind of like leather! The RO said to just continue with lotions and vit E oil. My rads skin feels really soft...it's completely hairless. And I'm not sure if the sweat glands work any more. Whenever I get the chance I sit outside in my bikini for an hour and I've faded the rads tan into the rest of my tan, but it's still really distinctive in my arm pit. I'm seriously considering the TUFNIP license plate!
msjag...the last time I was in OOB, I didn't notice any quality cabana boys...we may have to go south to find them!
-
My radiated boob feels thicker or denser than the other one but I don't really notice a difference in the skin. Still not liking to touch it much - it seems fairly numb as well and I know when I had my mammo last week, the tech said she noticed that it is still warmer than the other one. Hmmm, really??
Also I noticed that I don't sweat under my arm on the rads side, and no hair either. Guess that's ok.
-
Marjie, I also notice the radiated boob can be warmer at times. I was told this was "normal". (Normal was before b/c!!) Anyway, I had stopped aquafor weeks ago, maybe I still should use it. I stopped rads on April 30. seems like a lifetime ago. I am noticing the achy, feeling like I'm 100 when I get up from sitting or laying seems to be lessening, except for a car drive of over 20 minutes.
GirlFriday and Claire, no cabana boy yesterday!!
Packing for a trip with Girlfriday down south!!!
-
It all gets better. This weekend I went to OK (500 miles 1 way) and back. Made my DS stop every couple of hours and made the trip just fine. Enjoyed showing off my new foobs to family there.
-
So I haven't "tanned" this summer. How do you keep your radiated side out of the sun? I would love to "even" out my tan, but I don't want the rads side to get any darker. We went to the beach back in June but I sat under the umbrella most of the time. I slathered 50 sunscreen on my chest even tho I didn't even let it see sun. But the real reason I haven't been out in the sun is mental--hot flashes. Its kinda taken the joy out of laying out in the sun. ; (
GrandmaBubba-- hope you had fun on your trip seeing your family! This is quite a drive in this heat!
-
I've been having to avoid the sun too (hot flashes galore!!). I use a strong sunscreen though when I am out on the water and I seem to have "evened out" as far as the radiation area goes. It's still very dark under my boob and in my armpit but I won't worry about that. My skin has changed I think since chemo anyway....my face is covered with freckles that I never had before.
I am noticing a bit of a dry cough sometimes....anyone else getting that? Like a little tightness in my chest that makes me want to cough a bit but nothing too serious. My RO said I might get a cough a few months out of rads.
-
I don't where any sunscreen...horrible I know...but I've been reading a lot about increases in melanoma, and the concern that sunscreen may cause it! I just avoid the sun from the hours of 10 to 2...and I try to minimize my exposure to one hour. I have "warm flashes"...and often I'm not sure if it's the weather or me! At night it's definitely me. I got my fasting blood work done this morning, as my appt with the MO is on Thursday. I didn't take my Tamoxifen because I didn't want to do it on an empty stomach, and for as bad as that little white pill has made me feel, I always know it when I don't take it. I start sweating, and feel nauseous, and just want to lie down. I guess I've adjusted to it enough now that I'm clearly addicted! HA! My MO's office is so nice. I'm participating in an Army of Women research study...they needed two vials of blood for testing regarding genetic anamolies in young women with BC. I was prepared to give battle if they didn't fill the two vials while they were filling the three of their own, but it was no problem. I'm so pleased! I thought for sure they would tell me I had to go to a different lab and pay for it. Although I won't ever really know the results of my bloodwork, I'm thrilled to be able to contribute to the research community.
On the flip side, I am so tired of getting denials for jobs that I am more than qualified for! Thank goodness they are all on email, because I could wall paper my house with them! Even dealing with the temp agencies has me pulling out my hair...I used to have a "sun down" rule...I would return all emails/phone calls by sun down on the day rec'd....That is just not the way the majority of places work these days. Argh!
-
Claire, I found a bathing "dress" that comes up high across the chest and up high unde the arm, everyone loved it...a friend said I should help patteren it for women with BC! I found it at a consignment shop, don't usually do used bathing suits, but I washed/dryed and its perfect!! I've looked online/everywhere for one like it...but of course, no luck!!
Today I am so happy to celebrate my birthday!!! Bring them on year after year after year!!! being 52 feels great!! Family celebration tonight!
Ok..so now I understand why people with wavy, curly hair dislike the humidity...the minute you walk outside...instant curl...hubby calls me "curly top" now. Lovely!!!! Grateful to have hair, very grateful, but this curly do has a mind of its own!!
Thinking of us all today, meeting from chemo/rads/after rads....how blessed I'm feeling to have met all of you. Have a great day everyone!!
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MSJAG!!!!!!! HOPE YOU HAVE A FANTASTIC DAY
Hadn't thought of a consignment shop, what a great idea!!
Girlfriday, i feel for you about the job search. I HATE my boss, but I know if I leave it would be close to impossible for me to find a new job--my job skills are totally non-technical and I am tired of working in the service industry. At least you are out there looking! Kudos to you!! And good luck on your doc visit--I'm sure it will be all good!!! It's cool that you are doing a Army of women study, I have been signed up for years (pre BC) and never qualify for any studies. Figure now since DX I may be of more help!!
-
Happy Birthday MsJag! If you design the suit, I'll put a crochet fringe on it!
cmblastic: I'd never heard of the Army of Women before my dx. I only qualify for this study because I was dx'd at 37...otherwise I haven't qualified for any of the others. As to my job hunt, I don't even know what to do anymore. I've been an admin for many many years, and I think that's why I can't get a job...they're all going to less skilled, younger people. I guess I can console myself with the fact that the jobs obviously aren't for me!
-
Happy Birthday MSJAG!!! Hope you are having a wonderful day
!!

Well, here's a new one for you! I've been off the boards for a few weeks because we had to fly to NY city for my husband to get knee replacement surgery. Though my MO is in Birmingham, I was able to have my first labs, my 3 month ones, done on St. Croix before we left on July 7 and didn't get my results until the 30th, after we returned from NY. Although my vitamin D levels and Ca27.29 were normal, I was shocked to see that there were a LOT of abnormal low readings in my blood work. Let me backtrack and say that I've a history (at least 5 years) of lower WBC and platelet levels, but in addition to those being even lower, my RBC, Hemoglobin and Hematocrit were also low. I've had no physical indications that I've had blood problems: My energy level is high, I've a good appetite, my color is good, no fevers or infectons. To make a long story short, 3 blood tests, a spleen ultrasound, and several doctor visits later, I saw an oncologist on island this morning and have a bone marrow biopsy scheduled for next Thursday. Though I've been on Femara since May, no one thinks this could be one of its side effects. This onc said he doesn't think this is related to my BC.. which is a relief. However he thought that the radiation I had to treat it might possibly have triggered something in my rib bones (marrow) to create all these abnormalities. My BHM MO's nurse had said this wasn't possible, but I wonder. It would be interesting to see if any of your docs would think this could be related to BC radiation.
Having to do follow-ups to my BC care may have saved my life because if it wasn't for that blood test, I'd never have known I had a problem and it probably would have gotten much worse. I'm not saying I'm not a bit shaken by all this, but I'm seeing it as another bump in the road and grateful that it was discovered in time to do something about it.
-
Ginger, geez, does it every end, thought you may be enjoying some relaxing time, sounds like you and your hubby have been busy with more doc appts. Wishing you great results in all your tests. Glad to see you back, sorry your going through all the tests.
ok weird question, the last few days that I've looked, haven't been checking for a month, but I notice a line across my skin under my breast...I have been bra less, hubby thinks its where the skin hits skin, never had it during rads...its like the line you'd get across your waistband if your jeans were tight! just a slight indentation, everything else is good, normal pains on and off in breast area, but nothing severe. I'm so tired of looking at this breast lately and checking it!! I think its time to hire a cabana boy to to that for us too!!! He'd be scared off with my leathery underneath skin!!!
-
Ginger--sorry to hear about the hinky blood work. Hopefully, its and easy fix and just a few more vitamens!! : ) Thinking about you.
msjag-wish I could help you. That sounds like something you might want to get checked out. I would think it would have something to do with the clothes you are wearing, but if you have going braless. . . .hmmmm, stumped on that!
-
Ginger - thinking of you!
-
Gingertx: I have a feeling that this abnormalities are just part of your healing process...rads trigger or not, but bet you'll be able to bounce back from this. I think we all react so differently to the rads, that the trauma has SE that last a while. I hope your hubby's knee is doing well!
msjag: My skin is more discolored where skin meets skin...and I'm still having nipple issues. my nipple peels where the nipple meets the areola...it looks like a dry ledge. The RO said just keep up with the lotions and we should all do so for at least a year...not necessarily the heavy aquaphor, but Vit E oil or Baby Aveeno. I wonder if your skin is doing something similar to my nipple? I would say lotion the heck out of it over the next week, and if it changes or does not improve go to the doc...oh, and try to stop looking at it. I think I got a neck cramp trying to look at my nipple more closely.
Did anyone else get freckles they didn't notice before? I've got this little teeny one on my nipple now. I'm so nipple focused!
Saw the MO yesterday. She said I look "great"...I have an appointment for follow up with the BS in October...That's when I'll have my first mammo. I can feel the scanxiety start to tickle. But it's almost time for Burrito and Margarita's down by our redneck fire pit! Yahoo!
Last night I woke up in extreme ear pain. We went swimming a couple weeks ago, and I remember having water in my ear that was really deep and wouldn't come out. Now I have an ear infection. I feel like a five year old. And it hurts, bad. I now understand why kids cry when they get them. At least I can dose my self with more motrin when I feel like it!
-
Thanks for the advice everyone, certainly appreciate it. The line disappeared during the evening, must have something to do with clothing, skin on skin...noticed a bit of it today, and I am now again faithfully lotioning up... the other breast actually had the same faint line, I'm just so focused on the BC one!!
Girlfriday, sorry to hear about your ear. You do craclk me up with your descriptions!! Hope the nipple issue resolves quickly.
Going to foxwoods casino tomorrow to meet my cousins from NY, will be a good time!! I love to walk around, gamble a bit, and people watch! Have a great weekend everyone!!
-
I have freckles on my face - never had them before. Now I gotta go check my nipples.....
-
GirlFriday--Glad to hear the good report from the MO. Don't worry yet about October--we'll be here to keep your mind off of it. Amd I will definitely join you in one of those virtual margaritas!! So sorry for the ear pain. We are all so focused on BC and its SE's that when something else happens to us, its kind of shocking to the mind and body!! Hope it heals soon!!
msjag--have fun at the casinos. Sounds like a great place to people watch--I love doing that!! May you strike it rich!!
marjie--i guess I have what you might call freckles, all over, that I really don't remember having. Have a few age spots on my chest that I didn't have before rads--but since BMX don't have to worry about the nip being funky!! One good perk of this mess!!
Everyone have a great w/e--I am off to work. Ick. Not off till Wednesday when I drive my son back to UF. Fun times.
-
So my ear canal is so swollen the medicine is not getting to it! I called the doc on Saturday, and said, my ear hurts more...they replied "It takes 48 hours to work"...So I just took more ibuprofen...it got a little better on Sunday, and then Sunday night I woke up with severe pain. Now I think I have a pretty high tolerance for pain. I always have. I went to the doc again, and they then dx'd the ear canal swelling issue by inserting a "wick" into my ear. Some sort of cellulose that expands when wet, but first the put numbing drops in my ear to relieve any pain. So after the drops and before the insertion I was laying there thinking, how are these drops going to work if the medicine doesn't...apparently that wasn't on the mind of the nurse and doc. So they insert this wick into my ear, and I go..."Uh, that really hurts," so they put more numbing drops in. Now I can hear my pulse in my ear, and it still really hurts. I think it's kind of funny though. I didn't think there was much about BC tx that was very painful, but this little ear infection is buckling my knees. Now where is my margarita mix?
-
Pouring you one..and passing the pitcher GirlFriday..geez...I hope your pain subsides soon.
No rain in Maine, right?
Today is one of those blah days when you can't believe you have/had b/c..next month starts all the testing..mri...two hundred people looking at/examining the girls. ugh...Why couldn't we all be in a sewing/knitting/rowing or book club instead of the lifetime membership we got w/ bc. Sorry, usually not negative, ..but b/c just sucks...really does.
-
Today it was a wash out...but msjag you're welcome to visit! I'm making chicken enchilada's for dinner and a glass a wine is preventing my whine. I can still hear/feel the pulse in my ear, so I believe a second glass will be required for pain management purposes. Tomorrow I'm making dilly beans as it's supposed to be rainy again. You could come and sample the blueberry jam I made a couple weekend ago, and the blueberry teacake I'm planning to make!
Actually that invite is open to anyone here...there's always food and a comfortable bed, and a neurotic dog to keep you company.
-
Girlfriday, thanks for the invite, I would love to be in cool Maine right now!! Florida heat doesn't help the dreaded hot flashes. Thank god I have a walk in cooler at work!!How is that ear? That wick procedure sounds absolutely dreadful!! Ick!! I hope it is a miracle cure for you!
Msjag sorry about the feeling blue. How was your casino trip? Good to see family???
And if y'all are pouring, put minein big sippie cup so I don't spill it!!!
