Fast Track to Surgery

Well, I hope I am!  A surgeon I went to for a second opinion scheduled surgery before I had a chance to even think about it--I called my insurance company and they told me second opinion doctors can't do that, so I should be OK for getting insurance approval.  I have my MRI Thursday (yay!  It is only four months late!) and surgery should be Aug 2!  I'm going with Alloderm One Step w/Dr. Langstein, Dr. Skinner will do the BMX.

What should I do to prepare?  I got a recliner and new button front pajamas.  What else will make my life easier?

Here's what I can think of right now:

move things you will use (i.e. clothes, dishes)  or food you will eat down to lower shelves or countertops.

have all your medication caps already loosened.

I found it hard to push down on liquid soap dispensers at first, and had to put bar soap in kitchen

figure out how you will handle the drains. I was sent home from hospital with a masectomy vest with only one (tight) pocket for one drain. The other drain I put in the breast pocket of my button-front shirt. Once home, I changed into a button front nightgown that had a pocket on each hip. It was easiest dealing with the drains in those pockets. If I had known how much I would end up wearing that nightgown, I would have bought more!

Bring a small pillow for your car ride home from hospital, to put between you and the seatbelt.

Take stool softeners with your pain meds ! They started me on those in hospital and I kept it up once at home and had no problems. But I have heard NIGHTMARE stories of pain from those who did not take stool softener.

Stock up on foods you think you will be able to handle after surgery, if your appetite is not good. It's important to keep your strength up so your body can heal. For me it was soups, cottage cheese, saltine crackers.

I'm sure others will think of more tips...good luck on Aug 2 !

Wow, Jen42, we were diagnosed a day apart and you're already 'done'. How do you like your new girls?

I mean my surgery was 4/5, got my 'news' 4/14, and the docs waited for a while. I'm ready already!

Oh, the waiting is the worst ! So incredibly stressful ! I almost had to wait until June 20 for my surgery, but then my BS got my PS to shift some appts around and get the surgery done in late May. So now I'm 7 1/2 weeks out from surgery and things are good. I like my new foobs OK. Nothing beats the originals I had but I can live with these (ha, well I HAVE to, don't I?). I mean to say that I feel my PS did a really good job, the foobs are symmetrical and a full B cup (close to my original size), scars are minimal. I have had no complications. When you think about how the PS has to rebuild from basically nothing after the masectomy, it's kind of mind-blowing that we can get decent results at all !

Jen: there's a woman on these boards with a sig you might have seen: "Yes, they're fake. The real ones tried to kill me!"

    Always makes me chuckle.

Eema - I forgot to mention that a shower chair came in really handy when I was recovering from the BMX. I was weak, in pain,  and couldn't move my arms above shoulders for first 2 weeks. Washing my hair felt impossible. So I sat on the shower chair and my husband stood behind me and washed it. And even if you don't have someone to do that for you, just being able to sit for the first few showers is helpful. Less fatiguing, less chance of losing your balance and falling.

We have a bench built in the shower and yes, it is a big help. Last Tuesday was my BMX. I think I'm doing ok, except my drains get clogged and then my armpit KILLS. I called a nurse out to check it and she said it was fine, but warm water running over it helped a lot. I go back to PS tomorrow.

And one last thing--sorry to be gross, but the worst of it all was not pooping. I threw up from that pain while I was on the toilet. Both ends exploded at the same time--what a treat!

Eema, I had my surgery two weeks ago today and I was under strict orders NOT to shower with the drains in. I had the last one out today, and they said I can shower tomorrow...finally! You are lucky your doc lets you shower. Did they teach you how to 'milk' the drains (They also calling it stripping the drains) it helps keep bloodclots and tissue from clogging the tubing. Have them show you how, that will help with the clogging.

Narcotics will defnitely constipate you, so keep up on the stool softeners if you are still having troubles. I had to take a dose of MOM a few days after surgery and it very painlessly restored me to a regular state. Maybe if you are still constipated the doc will recommend that for you too.

Good luck on your recovery, it really does get easier even if it doesn't seem so now.

Eema -- sorry, I am not on this site as often now that I'm back at work. I'm so glad the surgery is behind you. But sorry to hear you were vomiting and having diahrrea at same time...that's just horrific ! I don't have much advice to offer on your drains situation. Mine were only in for 7 days and I didn't have clots, didn't have to "milk" them, and they only hurt where the entrance holes were.
