im so sick and tired of reading labels on everything i buy soooooo im using coconut oil for my face and body....gave up the makeup and bought Alba Botanica natural very emolient sunless natural tanning. And dove soap for sensitive skin that i used during the rads.AND i clean my face with baby wipes.I just cannot keep up with all of this...its summer and its too hot for makeup anyway...the tanning does not make you look orange.I use Natures Gate shampoo and conditioner that is also natural.now all i have to do is find a hair spray and im done...this is getting very expensive.

    Sherbear thanks for the info.

Granny yes it does get expensive.  I just started using Natural Gates shampoo and conditioner as well. I still work in an office so going without makeup is not much of an option.  Think I might scare people off.  But if you find a hairspray let me know.

I've been posting here on behalf of a family member, but saw this and wanted to offer my .02.  I'm kind of a beauty/skincare junkie.

Free & Clear is a good brand that is exactly what the name states.  They make a hairspray:

    http://www.dermstore.com/product_Free+%26+Clear+Hair+Spray+-+Firm+Hold_1611.htm

Josie Maran cosmetics makes some nice paraben and other chemical-free products.  I do believe it's not entirely "green" but certainly better than L'Oreal or some of the other junk on the shelves.

Have you guys considered indie makeup companies? I can recommend a few that offer mineral makeup free of chemicals.  If you want some links to excellent beauty blogs offering good information, I can provide those too.

Tarte makes some great products and I really love their lip crayons.  Origins has a skincare line that is organic.  Their cleansing oil is excellent for removing makeup.

100% Pure is a makeup, skincare and haircare line that is available on QVC and their website and contains almost food-grade ingredients.  It's excellent stuff.

I've heard raves about Suki skincare's lemongrass scrub.  John Masters Organics has some nice hair products.

Atopalm MLE - excellent face cream that has just recently switched to paraben-free.  Skinstore.com carries it.

Probably my favorite bath store is the indie Haus of Gloi.  They make delicious bar soaps, whipped soaps, body scrubs and lip balms in a huge variety of scents.

Another thing to remember is that some ingredients like the ureas, quarternium and DMDM Hydantoin are formaldehyde-releasing preservatives and can be skin irritants.  I make it a point to avoid those if possible.

Oh, The Body Shop is slowly switching to paraben-free too.  They've introduced a haircare line that is organic.  Dr. Hauschka also makes some good skincare and cosmetics, although pretty pricey.

Caudalie is a higher-end skincare line that has switched to being organic.  They make quite a few nice products.

Ah, and how could I forget Naked Bee! The products smell so delicious and their lip tints are really nice.

If I come up with other ideas, I will let you guys know.  Sorry this post is rambling.  All of these companies were coming to me as I wrote!

PS - a few drugstore brands that have gone organic include Sally Hansen by Carmindy's line (only at CVS) and certain Physician's Formula products.  I really like both lines.

Additionally, here is a great blog all about paraben-free cosmetics:

    http://parabenfreeprincess.blogspot.com/

One more thing - Garnier Fructis has introduced a paraben-free shampoo and conditioner.  The conditioner is pretty nice.  Their products are unfortunately not cruelty-free however.

I think I posted this on another thread, but it would make sense to put it here as well.  It's an organic skincare line I have used in the past, but they have a blog which I find quite helpful when it comes to sunscreen and certain ingredients in cosmetics:

    http://www.sophyto.com/blog/

Keep going through all of the pages, has some really great info :)

Went shopping yesterday and bought Korres concealer and used it this morning I really like it.  The other day I purchased the new physicians formula organics mascara.  It is OK but I will try another and compare.  It is just not as good as what I was using with all the bad stuff in it.  I also purchased some tarte blush but trying to use up what I have and then will make the switch.  Have not gone make up shopping in quiet a while, it was fun.  Thanks to all who have contributed on here.  At least I knew what I was searching for.

That's great Sherry!  I agree about the PF mascara, I bought a few of the organic ones of theirs and they went on pretty well, but I looked like a racoon within an hour they ran so bad.  My mascara is the only thing I'm having a tough time with. Tarte's has a few, and I've tried one, and it was really volumizing, but it dried out pretty fast and for that price, that's not cool.  The one Korres one wasn't up to snuff either, IMO.  Love the Tarte powder blushes though and their TEN cheek stain is awesome too!

I purchased Renpure Organics hairspray and it holds really well.  I purchased it at walgreens.  They have a complete line of haircare.  The only thing it is aerosal, but I checked out their webiste renpure.com and they do make a non aerosal as well but walgreens did not have it.  I have very fine thin hair so I purchased the firm hold and boy do they mean firm.  Next time I'll purchase a softer hold one.

Sherbear, I did some more thinking and remembered Vapour Organics.  I just bought a few products from this line and I like the fact that they're goof-proof and are terrific for when you're headed out the door and don't feel like spending a lot of time on makeup.  I purchased the kit with a foundation, blush and pore cover stick.  I also got their concealer and another stick blush, both of which are pigmented and creamy.

Interestingly, the company was started by a very close friend of the famed makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin:

    http://www.vapourbeauty.com/

100% Pure makes a mascara, although I haven't tried it.  I have tried other makeup items and have been impressed, but mostly I like their skincare.  Their shower gel used to be runny, but it did foam like crazy anyway.  It was runny because they didn't add any thickeners.  Also, if you like Bath & Body Works scents, this company makes a lot of great smelling "foodie" lotions:

    http://www.100percentpure.com/Default.asp

If you enjoy playing with loose eyeshadow, there are a few indie companies that make some terrific, complex colors, mostly mineral-based and no parabens/other chemicals:

    http://www.fyrinnae.com/

(Long wait time with Fyrinnae, but they are upfront about their turnaround times and very helpful.)

OK, if any of you are video game nuts, you'll enjoy this company.  Also similar to Fyrinnae with loose minerals:

    http://www.shirocosmetics.com/catalog.htm

A blogger friend of mine likes Meow Minerals, also natural:

    http://www.meowcosmetics.com/

Bare Escentuals has a paraben and other chemical-free mascara that I've tried.  I did like it, but I usually don't have issues with any mascara smudging:

    http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P267701&categoryId=B70

Don't be fooled that all mineral companies are paraben-free, though.  Pur Minerals, for example, uses some in a few of their products.

I checked my shower and remembered a few organic products from lines I really like:

-Giovanni (their Hot Chocolate body scrub is wonderful, both for scent and what it does) - you can get this at Target, Ulta, if your grocery store has an organic section, natural foods markets

-Desert Essence Organics (great smelling body lotions, shampoos and conditioners among other things - I've seen the line at Vitamin Shoppe):  http://www.desertessence.com/organics

These are Sephora's organic brands and my comments:

    http://sephora.com/browse/section.jhtml;jsessionid=QUX2W5S5QEKKOCV0KQLQIGQ?categoryId=C17824

-Boscia, Carol's Daughter, Juice Beauty, Nude, Skyn Iceland, Ole Henriksen - meh, some are just OK; some are just overpriced and not worth the money (Nude, Skyn Iceland).

-Jack Black makes the best lip balms - very moisturizing

-Jurlique, Lavanila, Caudalie, Pacifica, Pangea, Ren and Tarte make some nice things.  Lavanila's deodorants smell delicious.

Bubble & Bee - how could I forget this line? Excellent organic products.  Everything I've tried I've liked, which are the lotion sticks, regular lotion, lip balms and soap:

    http://www.bubbleandbee.com/

Earth Science makes some nice facial cleansers.  You can purchase them at Vitacost.com.  I haven't seen them in store.

Jane Iredale makes expensive, but nice products, and they are chemical-free:

    http://www.janeiredale.com/

And finally, some makeup lines, while not organic, either don't use parabens at all or only in some products.  Check your labels, though.  Here are a few off the top of my head:

    -MAC

    -Stila

-Some Milani products are now paraben-free.  I love this line! It's at CVS.

-Inglot (Polish line that offers a huge range of colors - their eye shadow palettes rock):

    http://www.inglotusa.com/

    -Bobbi Brown

    -Becca (expensive, but nice)

    http://www.beccacosmetics.com/

-Zoya makes a huge range of nail polishes free of phtalates, formaldehyde and other nasty chemicals typically found in polishes

-Devita makes my favorite to date facial physical blocker sunscreen.  I also ordered a trial pack of their skincare and it's pretty nice.  It's also at Vitacost.com:

    http://www.devita.net/content/index.php

Phew.  Finally, for makeup inspiration, I enjoy these blogs:

    http://phyrra.net/

    http://www.temptalia.com/

Hope that helps you all out.  Feel free to ask about other brands and if I've tried them, I can tell you what's good or bad.  :)

Sevenofnine~ Wow, you have been busy, lol!

Thanks for all of the info, I've used quite a few of your reco's :) .  Love the LaVanilla deo in coconut vanilla, smells SO good and I adore the Giovanni body scrub, but the one I have isn't the chocolate one, but the tube with volcanic stuff in it (wonderful for 'bumpy' upper arms).  I'll have to eventually look into the Devita sunscreen (tried their skincare a few years ago when they sent it to me, only found it okay though and didn't continue), I've been using John Masters Organics spf 30 for my face and it's pretty good, although I should have just gone with my usual Jurlique for face that I love, but I thought I'd save a few bucks.  I've tried contacting Vapour as I wanted to know if they offer industry discounts or send product to artists (figured they would due to the Keyvn Aucoin connection) as I have a hard time paying full price for MU and hair stuff when I'm sent so much already.  Don't mind when it's just for me though, but I don't wear tons of MU so I'm pretty stocked.  Have yet to hear back from them so maybe I'll try again.  Allima Pure sent me a huge package, so far, am really liking everything (it's loose mineral-based foundations, powders, and pigments) and I adore RMS Beauty which is made with coconut oil and smooths on like a dream.  Have you tried the Butter line of nailcare?  I really like it, along with Zoya and Spa Ritual and Sula makes a great peel-off polish in tiny bottles of classic and trendy colours.

    Thanks for the blogs!

Sevenofnine and sherbear, thanks for the wonderful info, both personal experience and blogs/data. I also found the Yes to Cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, etc brand. I got some towelettes wipes with cucumber that are very refreshing at Ulta. Target carries yes to tomatoes (spot stick?) and a Yes to Carrots, no idea what that one is.

I just went to Ulta and bought a bunch of Tarte makeup.  It got pretty expensive, but I look like crap since dx, surgery and chemo so I am worth it, right?  I only used it once other than the day the gal applied it on my face at Ulta.  I felt like a million bucks when I left there with new make up on.  I did get the concealer (Lord knows I needed that with the dark circles from no sleep in 7 months), tinted face moisturizer, pressed powder, blush and a lipstick.  I also got an eye cream from another brand...can't think of it right now.  It's also all natural/paraben/sulfate/aluminum free. I have been using PF mascara only because I was trying to keep lashes through chemo and it comes off so easily I figured that would be good...now I am ready for some better mascara (lost many lashes in the last 2 weeks...but new ones are growing...I can see them!).  Any other mascara recommendations???

I wanted to recommend Luxe mascara and liner that I got from Gabriel cosmetics.

From what I can tell, their ingredients are ok.

Mascara works quite well and liner easy to use.

Their concealer is a bit thick but gives great coverage.

mdg, I've heard raves about Tarte's Lights, Cameras, Lashes mascara.  A great resource for product reviews is Makeup Alley.  I don't advise posting on their boards as some of the members are kind of nasty, but the reviews are excellent and mostly unbiased:

    http://www.makeupalley.com/product/

I have to say, there are very few products I will make exceptions for with parabens in them, but one is Japanese mascaras, straight from Japan.  I get them from sites that import, like imomoko.com.  Not all have parabens, but these things wear like iron, lengthen like no one's business and rinse off with water and a little pressing on the lash.  I also like that Japan has higher safety standards for their cosmetic products.

I'm also liking Cover Girl's new Nature Luxe mascara, but the nature part is a colossal laugh.  There is nothing natural in CG's products.

    Everything in moderation, I think.

Tarte sent me their Lights Camera Lashes mascara and it thickens really well and doesn't smudge (and most smudge easily on me).  My only complaint is that it tends to dry out quickly, something you don't want when spending that much.

Anything to do with lashes, Japan will be ON it and perfecting it.  They are obsessed, I love it.

There's a new Canadian line of lip products called BITE that are amazing!  They are actually food-grade.  The pigments are so rich and moisturizing.  I"m usually a die-hard Chanel Rouge Allure or Coco lover, but these have made me switch.  The Rose shade is so pretty and flattering on most and they also have thick liner sticks that you don't have to sharpen and are so creamy, but stay on so well.  You can get it at Sephora.

Um, not to give a plug to Whole Foods, but when I was checking out their hair gel last week I learned that they started new requirements for the hair/body products that claim to be organic. (as far as I know, there are no rules/regulations for body care products to claim to be natural or organic). I didn't get into the details but FYI. (some of the products have been relabeled since they don't meet WF's requirement for organic)

Was at walgreens the other day walking through the hair care aisle when something caught my eye - organic coconut and hibiscus hair care products. There was a condition-and-hold spray (with a great coconut scent) and curl defining smoothie, a cream leave-in styling treatment. The products are made with all natural ingredients, including coconut oil, neem oil, silk protein, and they smell fabulous. I think the brand is called Shea Moisture. I had some of their body lotion which I picked up at target. There was also a shampoo and conditioning mask, from a different scent line, but I did not get those. The products I bought were 9.99 each, pretty generously sized, smell fabulous, and ingredients sounded really clean. Was worried they might be greasy, but I have not found this to be the case. Used them without drying my hair, which is still quite short (growing out after chemo) and puffy/curly, and, amazingly, they reduced the puff quite considerably and made my hair very soft. I love being able to get natural organic products from the store instead of online Highly recommend.

I hear what you are saying sevenofnine.  I had a few coupons and Walgreens was have a CG sale.  I picked up their new "naturals" line mascara and foundation.  It was only when I got it home and read the packaging that I realized what a joke this was.  I haven't opened them and I may be returning them this weekend.

I didn't know that about Japanese mascara.  I will have to check these out.  This is the one product that I can't do without.  Blush, foundation, eyeliner, etc etc etc, I will leave behind.  I am always on the lookout for good mascaras.

Thanks everyone for all these ideas. I'm shopping for a couple new products and even the "old" posts (>1 month ago) are helpful. So thank you.

Based on the wisdom of everyone here, I'm thinking of trying the 100percentpure mascara. have people have much success with their other products? I'm shopping for a new facial moisturizing with sunscreen (I'm been using Dermologica's pure light spf 30 chromaWhite. Feels like my facial skin is looking bad/old). Anyone have experience with these? I wish they had trial sizes that were cheaper.

    http://www.100percentpure.com/SPF-SKINCARE-DUO-s/588.htm

I may try the MyCelle SPF 28 that someone recommended (SherryC?)

Any thoughts on the concealer? I've been using Jane Iredale's Active Light #5 and am happy with it (though time to buy more). I can't imagine getting a good color match over the internet. Anyone have luck with that and/or advice? (I'm leaning towards sticking with Iredale)

I've been doing a fair amount of makeup shopping recently.. (nothing to write about) except that my food quality virgin coconut oil is so awesome for many things.. hand cream, makeup remover.. even hair gel.  I don't even like the smell of coconut so much, but it so easily blends into my skin.  it's great under makeup in very small amounts to make foundation not seem like foundation.

Peggy I do like the MyChelle and also I recently purchased Korress concealer at the Sephora counter at Pennys'  the girls there were very helpful with what lines were good lines without all the junk in them.  There have several to choose from and you can check colors which I like.  I was hesitant about ordering makeup over the internet without knowing how it was going to look.  I think I may just go back for the rest of my makeup

Thanks for the info Sherryc. Yeah, I wasn't sure where a local Sephora was.

apple, is the coconut oil greasy on the skin? I used some this weekend when making muffins and it was murder getting it off the muffin tins (I used it to grease the pan too. Maybe a mistake).  I love the smell of coconut. Maybe I'll give it a try!  Thanks.

Has anyone used the Yes to Blueberries line? (part of the Yes to Carrots brand). There's a sale at my local drugstore. EWG seems to think most of the products are good. (BTW, I've noticed that EWG is gives a bad rating to RETINYL PALMITATE (VITAMIN A PALMITATE)  Is anyone else avoiding that but me? It seems common in most of the anti-aging creams.)

I switched to coconut oil as my main source of skin care a couple of years ago and love it. I get mine from tropical traditions because it is cold pressed and unprocessed. I use it for cooking too. Coconut oil is liquid at 76 degrees so in the summer I put it in a pump dispenser. I transfer it to small containers in the winter because it is solid, and large containers are easily contaminated. In fact, you should always look for containers that you do not put your fingers in to avoid putting bacteria in the pot. Try to always look for squeeze packaging . Tropical traditions also has a great mosquito repellent that really works!

Though it may seem overwhelming at times to be careful about all of this stuff it is very important. Keep in mind that the less our bodies have to work to get rid of all the free radicals we are exposed to, the easier it is for our immune system to do its job. So try to make it easy on the immune system by using as little product as possible on a daily basis. Taking quality supplements and especially mercury free fish oil will also make your skin feel and look great.

Just because something says it is organic, does not mean it is good. Remember poison ivy is organic. Some organics such as lavender can even irritate the skin. The important thing is to look at the preservative. If parabens are not used, is it replaced with formaldehydes? These are just as toxic. Usana has a great line of skin care that they have a self preserving patent for. No parabens or formaldehydes, and they have done extensive research to make sure they do not include any known carcinogens or skin irritants.

And finally, do not fear every ingredient. There are a lot of scare tactics when it comes to these products with no scientific evidence that some ingredients are dangerous, even though orgs like the EWG or  Safecosmetics claim that almost everything that sounds chemical is dangerous. These orgs often go overboard to create a sense of panic and to make us think they are protecting us so we will donate to them.

    Peggy J,

I have been using Devita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30+.  I bought through iHerb, I think, but have also gotten from Vitacost in the past (they were out of stock when I went to re-order).  I love it - lightweight, non-nano, non-greasy, and I even wore it to the beach as my sunscreen and didn't burn (but I am medium skin -toned).

I love a lot of the 100 percent pure products.  Namely, the stick blush, and the lip glaze.  I have recently ordered a few more of their products to try.  Did not care for the body wash though - it's basically like those foaming hand soaps, not enough suds for me, for a body wash, and not creamy either, though it does smell good.

    Vivre,

Could you expand on the formaldehyde?  I'm sure it would be listed under some other name, do you know what it might be called?  Lately, I have seen phenoxyethanol in a lot of products and, while this has a decent rating on EWG, I still avoid it for skin products, only use hair products with this (but, of course, I apply those with my hands...)
