I have been wearing a wig to work everyday since i shaved my head in March 2011. As funny as it is, i got so many compliments on my hair. Some people know my secret, most people don't. My real hair is black and this one is medium brown. There is this lady at work, she even touched my wig and asked what i did to my hair since it looked shiny and full.. Well, she did it not once but two times. I was speechless. I didn't know what to tell her and figured i don't have to tell her anyway.

Wig has been part of my rescue team through this whole battle with cancer. I have been working full time but took 5 weeks off after surgery. I regretted taking vitamin C at 1000mg/day with reishi for 4 chemo sessions since i later read reports that it may blunt chemos effectivness. But i felt so strong and good. Anyway, no looking back. I haven't taken any supplements since the end of June. I am anxious to the end of treatment and rebuild my immune system again.

When people would compliment my "new do"  I would always respond, "You're welcomed to borrow it".  I hated my wig, but everyone seem to love it.

Haha - I have such fun with my wigs.  Long one day, short the next.  I do get some funny glances when I run into someone that I haven't seen in a while.

I'm almost 9 weeks PFC - I may buy one wig in a lighter color before I go "topless".  I hope that happens sometime around Christmas.

I'm not sure what received more compliments, my wig or my "new" short hair. Obviously my original hair needed changing.  I usually just smile and move on, but some questions cause an awkward pause.  When did you decide to cut your hair short?  Has your hair always been curly?  Nope, just received one of the world's most expensive perms!

Hey Apple. Good to see you here. How are you doing?

How on earth could you stand it?  I wore a wig exactly twice when I was bald.  The first time was only for a couple of hours.  the second time was when I chaperoned my son on a field trip to San Francisco and had to wear it from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Oh my, nothing cancer threw at me was that bad.

Since I'm Stage IV it's possible I'll end up bald again (this new chemo I'm on lets me keep my hair) and I want to try a wig again.  I am in a MUCH more public job now.  What kind did you wear that you didn't suffer through?

I had a really nice...expensive...real hair wig. I loved it! I colored it, low lights, cut it three times into different styles..I wore it for 8 months...until I had the balls to go topless...and could color my rat like hair. It was very hot when I wore it last summer but I liked it so much better than my synthetic wig...which was SUPER ITCHY.

Cool Breeze -  I loved my wig and it was so comfortable I forgot I was wearing it.   The brand was Jon Renau.  I got it at a shop that specializes in things for breast cancer patients.  I had a second wig from the same company that was not as comfortable.    I think you have to just keep trying them on until you find something that feels good.  I hope you don't need one again!

    Thanks Patty,

Next time (if there is one) I'll wait until I'm bald to try it on.  I have a small head and by the time I tightened that thing up it gave me headaches.  But, I bought a bunch of them thinking I'd switch up my hairstyle with my clothes - long, short, expensive, cheap....none I could stand at all.  All of them were synthetic though.

I hated my wig...it is beautiful, but not me....I wore it maybe a dozen times....and then put in on the foam head in my closet where it has been sitting ever since.....I can't give it away, but I'll never, ever wear it again....it is lighter than my hair and straight....before chemo, my hair was thick, course and wavy...dark brown with gray.....color is more gray now, but its thinner, softer and no longer coarse...and if I keep it short, its wavy.....when it starts to get long (like past my chin) its looks to  straggly (is that a word)....

I teach middle school and wore my cute wig into the new school year, so none of the kids knew  it wasn't 'my' hair. Just before Christmas, my 'real' hair was long enough to reveal in a very, very short curly haircut. One of my very fashion conscious 7th graders took one look at me and said (in horror) "WHAT did you do to your hair?" I rolled my eyes and said, "Don't even ask!!"

I have 3 wigs...one I bought that was professionally fitted for my head (Private Issue by Cyberhair), a Gabor wig that I got through the Look Good Feel Better program, and one that was given to me by a friend.  The Private Issue wig is, by far, the most comfortable of all.  First, the cap fits properly.  The other two are way too big for my bare head and I cannot do anything that will make either of them comfortable.  I can even sleep in my Private Issue, along with swimming in a lake or a pool.  Yup, it was very expensive but I could easily wear it all the time and not have any regrets.

I ended up with 7 wigs!  I had long ones, short ones, blonde, red, strawberry blonde.  I had fun with them.  I used a net thingy on my scalp and I didn't have a problem with itching.  I don't know the term for it but you get them at the wig shops.  I still have them for times I want to just play around.  I was too vain to go out in public without a wig on my head.  I ended up getting the synthectic wigs because it was so cheap - $50 to $80 per wig and there wasn't really any maintenance to them other than washing them in the sink and letting them dry.

Jancie, you did exactly what I thought I'd do. I think I have about 8 wigs, all bought before my hair fell out. Cap or no, I couldn't tolerate them. At the time, I worked in a middle school, now I work in a high school. I guess if I go bald again, I'll go expensive. Before, it was a lark and one time thing. Now, it's a lifestyle. :).

I could swim and sleep in my wig too (on a satin pillow, as befitted its price!). Mine had a built-in cap, and I had it professionally fitted.

It was from a line called "Amy's Presence"...a cyberhair wig from the 'Coral Collection'. The lady who started this line is Amy Gibson, she was a soap opera star who had alopecia. She needed hair for her career and didn't like any of the wigs that were available. This is the website on the back on my (old) brochure www.amyspresence.com

I have 4 wigs. My insurance paid 100% for up to 3 wigs. Then they changed when I got dx the 2nd time you can only get one free wig every 365 days. I ordered one online that was a mistake. I like my wigs just do not like wearing them. It is to hot here in AZ to be wearing a wig. Just about killed me in this heat, My wigs were fitted except for the one I bought online of course. I rock it bald or i wear a hat, or scarf. My daughter recommend to put baby powder on my head so it did not itch and it worked. She is a hairstyles. She even cut one wig for me cause I just did not like the way it looked on me. I did get my wigs at Classy Sisters they deal with cancer patients and make sure it fits well. The lady actually sewed it together for me. I was afraid to go bald at first. My daughter told me I could do it and so what if people look at you and know you have cancer or maybe you just like being bald. She said do not be afraid and be proud you are fighting and show  your pride of who you are.  Wow now that is something I would of told her. She is growing up. Cry I miss her being little. Though now she has blessed me with a granddaughter named  Aubrey who is turning one tomorrow. She has become my purpose in life. I think if someone touched I would yank away and give her a  look like what the hell do you think you are doing? My daughter really wanted to get a real one and I have thought about it. Now with my 3rd dx and it has been over 365 days to get a free one but they only cover so much on real ones. As we know they are expensive but from what I understand worth it. I still think it would be to hot here in AZ. I tell you though in the winter my head gets to cold. Remember to try baby powder!

Happy Birthday to Aubrey! A friend of mine was taking a nap with her wig at the end of her bed. Her little granddaughter had sneaked into her bedroom without permission and ran out to report, "There's an animal sleeping on gramma's bed!"

ruth, that made me laugh out loud! thanks for sharing. my daughter wore my wig a few weeks ago as a joke - she found it stuffed in a bag in my closet - and myhusband nearly had a heart attack. i think it induced some PTSD!

yanyan - you should do whatever you want- after all you've been through, you've (unfortunately) earned it. no need to tell her anything.

as sherrig noted - i hated my wig. i also felt i had a cartoon bubble shouting, "WIG!!!". my girlfriends insisted it looked cute - until the night i fried the ends, opening the oven to shift pizzas i made for my daughter's 12th bday party. oops.

diane - i just love how you noted having "the balls to go topless" - LOL!

Here is one more wig story: another friend of mine was driving down an icy highway and was involved in a minor accident with another car. She got out to see if the other driver was OK, not realizing that the impact had knocked her wig way back on her head. She checked with the other driver, who was OK but seemed extremely shaken up and worried about HER. They exchanged information and she assured him that she was FINE. When she got back in her car to wait for the police; she happened to look in the mirror, and saw the way the wig was sitting made it look like she had been half scalped!

    OMG Ruth!!

maybe we should compile a "wacky wig story" thread. i'm sure there are tons of them.

my kids used to toss it at each other and try it on; it was pretty hilarious, especially on my (then) 9yo son.

My hair started growing back during my chemo break ( 4 week prior to surgery and 4 weeks after surgery ). It started falling out again after i finished the rest 2 chemos but still looks hairy. I am still wearing a wig, as i too did not have the " balls" to go topless..My 5 year old used to tell me" you look better with your wig" , now she tells me " you look good without your wig". There were really hot days and i would ask her whether she would mind my taking off my wig and she said no, and told me that i should eat more greens !

Hi everyone.  I'm a new contributor to this forum (or for that matter, to any board), but have read many of your posts over the years and thought it was time to jump in.

I wore my very expensive wig about 4 times, then decided to wear a scarf for about a week, then went commando.  The wig and hairpieces made me feel as if I were hiding something, and it was very liberating for me to go without either...at home, during social events, at work, and during professional events.  One of the highlights of being hairless was when one of my very close colleagues at work greeted me with a big kiss on my bald head.  Priceless!  Another was when a friend's son (who was 6 at the time) said to me "you look funny".  His mother then scolded him by saying "now say something nice" to which he replied "nice head!".  LOL!

    Have a great day, everyone!

After almost four months of wearing my wig, I am sick of it.  It is so hot in this Texas heat.  It is long enough to have it pulled back, so it is not so hot on my neck.  I have also gotten compliments on my new "haircut", and it depends on the person and situation as to my response.  I am going to ask my hairdresser about cutting it shorter for the rest of the duration. I am four weeks PFC, and plan to ditch it ASAP.  I did go to the grocery store last night in just a cap, so I am getting braver.

I just saw your post and had to smile when I read it.  I had very similar experiences at work too.  I had a beautiful real Russian hair wig that an old friend gave me which looked exactly like my old hair but just a different style, and maybe a bit fuller.  This one lady kept standing at the door to my office and would stop, look, and say "girl, your hair looks great", then pause, "but I can't figure out what's different".  I work high end retail btw, so the girls there are always checking each other out so it wasn't anything too uncommon, but after about the third time, I finally said "shush, come over here" and gave her the low down.  She of course was a bit embarrassed (really didn't bother me) but her sister had gone through this too so she knew a lot about it.  Even funnier was when I stopped wearing the wig altogether and wen with my new SHORT doo.  I had long hair before so a lot of people were very surprised to see that!  Didn't bother telling everyone though, just said "thanks, the "new" me!

    Take care,

    Sharon

OH MY WING!!!!!  I HATE it and don't wear it unless it is a must.  I finished chemo June 19 and I have a nice head of hair coming back.  A nurse seeing me at radiation this week told me to stop wearing my baseball cap because my hair was must prettier. (She also told me that the cap was tacky. I do love this nurse.  She has helped me so much).

The check out lady at the grocery store yesterday also told me how good I looked without the cap.  My granddaugthers also told me my hair looked so good.

When it gets cold I think we will build a bonfire have a winier, masrshmellow, and wig roast.
