Hi ladies,

My brother has been told he needs a prostate biopsy.  Can anyone here rattle off some prostate bascis?  or suggest some prostate 101 reading?  More specifically, he's looking for a new doctor in NYC.  He's lived in CT for years and now his work has him in NYC parttime.  For starters, I think it's necessary to know the mainstream basics.  From there, I'm hopeful there's some integrative options available for achieving optimal prostate health.

For prostate they go by the Gleason score in terms of the aggressiveness of the tumor. Usually prostate is called a slow growing cancer. A Gleason 6 is usually not aggressive so the higher the score is, the more aggresive it is. A gleason score of 9 means that the patient needs to be seen today. One thing to watch out for is perineural invasion. It means that the cancer is starting to move out of the prostate. One most common staging tests upon diagnosis is a an abdominal CT and bone scan to rule out mets.

Hopefully he wont need any of this.

    Thanks cc and ll,

At this juncture, it looks like he's having elevated psa counts and a biopsy is the next thing they want to do.  While I clearly don't have a prostate, I still get the heebie jeebies and goosebumps at the thought of anyone having to get one biopsied.

Now I'm wondering what holistic options might be effective  in bringing that psa back into range.

PM me for a great doctor. He should see him for a consult BEFORE putting a needle into the prostate. They have a new kind of sonogram or imaging system, also.
