    For all the Zometa users...

Common Bone Drug May Help Prevent Breast Cancer Recurrence
    posted July 18, 2011
Most women taking hormone-based aromatase inhibitors for breast cancer also take bone drugs such as Zometa to help prevent therapy-induced osteoporosis. A new study suggests that early stage patients who combine Zometa with their hormone therapy for three years after surgery also reduce the chance of their cancer's return by 32 percent.

Although exactly how Zometa reduces the risk of recurrence isn't known, lead researcher Dr. Michael Gnant, a professor of surgery at the Medical University of Vienna, said he thinks "it prohibits dormant tumor cells in the bone marrow from ‘waking up.'"

Adds Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, "Zometa actually hardens the bone and makes it more difficult for the cancer to actually implant."

For the three-year study, 1,803 premenopausal women with early-stage hormone-receptive breast cancer were assigned to groups receiving different combinations of hormone drugs; some with, and some without, Zometa. After four years of follow-up, researchers reported women receiving Zometa had a 36 percent reduction in the risk of breast cancer recurrence, compared with women who did not receive the drug. In women over age 40, the risk of recurrence was cut by 42 percent. Side effects, including joint pain, bone pain, and fever were relatively mild and well-tolerated.

Gnant's group also found that Zometa was linked to a reduction in cancers developing in bone and other sites as well as cancer in the breast opposite where the original tumor was found.

Despite these favorable findings, more trials must be done to prove Zometa's benefits. "I never change my practice based on one trial," said Brawley. "But, I see very little harm in giving Zometa along with aromatase inhibitors. Many of the patients I take care of already get this anyway."

Nette - my next infusion is in September after we get back form our trip. There have been some studies where they say it's of no benefit except maybe in post menopausal women. I guess we'll see how that pans out in the future.

My 6th month mammo is tomorrow and my 31st Anniversary...Looking forward to a relaxing day with hubby after the morning mammo. Just a lil shopping and maybe a nice lunch out for the two of us. Hope everyone has a GREAT week

Just checking in ladies. I am 11 days out from surgery, started with 5 drains and now down to 2, moving right along. Still tinkering with the old digestive tract but it is all workable. I've had my first fill, that was an odd sensation, so numb, it was like being at the dentist.

I hope everyone is well. I see Big Onc next week for my 3 month checkup.

    Be well ladies!

Hi Melinda - glad you're doing well. Be prepared, I think they get really hard before they do the exchange.

    Anyone heard from Linda?

Only 8 days until the big trip!!!! I am looking forward to meeting our grandson. We don't hear much from them at all though so have no new photos to share. This is all because of her being a nut case.

Work is going well, I am now in my 6th full time week and I'm off from the end of this week. Just solved a bug in the software for the support people, so I haven't lost my problem solving ability:)

Thanks girls, my mammo was clear and I'm still -C- FREE.

Melinda, I don't know why but your post made me cry. Haven't done that in a while. Just knowing you had to deal with drains again just kills me. Cry  I so hated those after my axillary dissection.

A BIG Congrats to you Alicia on the 21 years, whoot whoot!!!!!!  Hey and thanks for the Scrabble game, been liking that being able to play at our own pace.

Sue, DO enjoy that grand-baby and just overlook your DIL! Wishing I could afford to go on a BIG A@$ trip and just get away for a bit. But, with the economy there is no time soon me and DH can get away. Sometimes I wonder why and what my life is all about. I just work, work, work, never now fun time anymore...except brief moments. I've never begrudged anyone for having more or being richer, I just wish there was more to life than eating, sleeping or working my butt off!! Out of 31 years, I've only had ONE TRUE VACA. Alrighty, done whining now. Oh, By the way I hadn't seen anything negative as far as Linda goes. I peeked at her FB. I know the 26th was fill #2.

Well girls, Love to all of you and I hope you have more of a joyous life than I.

Brenda, I know what you mean about wanting to go on a big vacation..I find that now that the kids are older and I am back to work, it feels like we are slowly getting back to being able to afford a trip.  Now our trip to Mexico wasn't a massive trip, it sure was nice.  I see my friends taking these big European trips and one friend just got back from a trip around the world...makes me jealous, but I am happy for her.  This summer with my husband gone, I decided to spend some money on a new patio set for the back yard, and I have been actually taking the time out to enjoy it.  I started reading again and my weekends I like to take the time to relax and enjoy summer...

On the subject of my husband, he is home tomorrow for two weeks.  I can't wait.  I just pray to god that the weather is nice so we both can enjoy my new purchase..We have also rented a cottage on Lake Ontario.  It is a beautiful part of the province, the beaches are amazing.

Sue, I hope you have a wonderful trip...give that grandbaby big hugs and kisses.

    Melinda, keep on draining...and healing.

Melinda ~ hope you get the last of those drains removed I know how awful they are.  And yes as you get that expander filled it gets harder and tighter.  Sometimes a bit painful after the fill they told me to take Motrin.  Good luck with your 3 month checkups, keep us posted.

I too have 3 month check ups, lung ct scan and oncologist on Monday.  I dread it all..........  scares the crap out of me.

Michele ~ same here on the friends TRIPS.  My friends went to Paris for a week, then flew to Barcelona and went on a 14 Day European tour to Italy. ahhhhh  the pictures look amazing.  I like you will sit on my comfy outdoor couch and read my NOOK.  (love that electronic book thing) !!

Brenda ~ so glad your mammo was good and you got the all clear !  Wonderful ~  the scrabble is fun !

I cannot believe how we are all rolling around the 2 year anniversaries from diagnosis.  So thankful we are here living life !!!

    Hugs to all,

    Alicia

    Hi Sisters! I'm baaaaaack!

I am sorry for disappearing, but I just needed a break. Surgery went great, and I just had fill number three. It's more uncomfortable than what I expected...no pain, just sooooooo much tightness and cramping in my shoulder blade. It's funny, my cancerous breast doesn't give me any trouble. That's the side that had the flap. The "good" side is the one that gets crampy. It seems like I've started chemo again. I have a few good days, and bam, it's time for a fill. Yes, the drains were def the worst part. I had three, and my ribs STILL hurt!

Like I said, I just needed a break from the boards, but I have been on Facebook. Depression is the pits. I'm still on medical leave from work, enjoying being home with Libby. I've got to get back some sense of normalcy.

Love to all, and thanks for the good wishes! (((HUGS)))

So nice to hear from everyone...have been checking here everyday to look for updates from everyone who had surgery.

Linda:  glad to hear you're all right.  Has to be so hard to go through the pain, drs. visits, and all that goes with the surgery, but looking down the road, everyone seem to be happy with the results. Hang in there!

You,  too, Melinda!  Alicia:  you are very encouraging, having been there/done that.

You are all in my prayers!  And Sue, for a safe and fantastic upcoming trip!!!

    Happy Friday!  Nette  :)

Linda, I understand the break from the boards..even Facebook... lately I'm just to busy with life to even post too often. I guess that's a good thing which means some normalcy is back in my life.

Posted last night on FB as my chickens had laid my first EGG. So, I had to take a picture of it and post to FB. WHOOT-WHOOT, bless their little hearts. All our hard work is starting to pay off.

Hope all you girls have an awesome weekend....Sue, enjoy your trip and that baby!

Brenda - wow - your first egg - enjoy it!!! You should post a pic of the peeps so we can see how they've grown.

Everything is now coming together. DH was owed a lot of money and the cheque still hadn't arrived today. So he rang the lady and she's doing an online transfer instead - we can pay off our credit cards and have a great trip now we have the cash!!!! It was a bit of a close call. 6 days til we go!!! I've got all the time in the world to do a good job of packing. It has been great being full time again at work, but I felt a great sense of freedom when I finished today. I sure have missed those days off I had while I was part time.

Congrats on your first egg Brenda!

Linda:  (((((Hugs))))) from the comfortable side.

I have an infection, my drains are filling with green stinky snot looking stuff. Doc called in antibiotic last night and I am waiting for the office to open so I can see what time to come in today. My whole right side feels like it has been run over by a truck.

Oh Melinda! How terrible. I am still so sore on the side where I had the drains. Were you sent home with antibiotics? I had to take two weeks of Bactrim...Flippin horse pills they were! I still can't believe you had 5 drains. I only had three, and I had bilateral TEs. Two were taken out a week after surgery, and the last one was taken out a week after that.

Brenda, sweet pictures! Enjoy breakfast :)

Brenda: Lovin' the chick pics, are you going to try to incubate any or just have breakfast.

Michele: have a wonderful relaxing vacation!

They took the TE out last night. It was infected and yada yada yada. But, the flap is still there so at least I have something I can use down the road once I have healed up from this. Bummer. Sucks to lose the same boob twice.

Melinda - I'm so sorry - what an awful thing to have to go through. TE's seem to be not worth the effort. Everyone seems to complain about them.

Brenda - You'll love this. I went to the markets this morning and they had a stall there called 'Girls for the Garden' especially for people who live in the city - they had the most fabulous pens and the most incredible huge white chooks - some English breed. They even had a Rhode Is. Red. I came home wanting some. What a fabulous name for their business. Now I just have to get rich to be able to afford to build a new carport nearer the front of our house and tear up the old one to make a place for some peeps.

Melinda, well sh!t ! This just sucks. I'm so sorry you have to go through all that. But like you said, the flap is still there. That's the worst part, and it's done. Any idea what caused the infection, or did your body just deny the expanders?

MELINDA ~ that just sucks !!!!!!!!!!!!!  I am so sorry ~~~  I hope your infection clears up soon.

Linda ~ how are you feeling?  getting any better?  it takes time, and those expanders are very uncomfortable.  Day by day.

I had my check up today.  Lung ct scan showed no change so my nodule is the same size. woo HOO and all my blood work was good.  I have now been bumped from 3 months to 6 months !  So happy I don't have to go back till February!!

Brenda ~ your roosters are so cute or are they hens?

Michele ~ how are you doing?  WE are going on a cruise to Canada Aug 22nd.  We can't wait, we hear the weather on the boat may be crappy but we plan on having fun, seeing good shows and doing some gambling ~ woo HOO !

    Hugs girls,

    Alicia

NETTIE and SUE ~ where are you?  Hopefully feeling good and living LIFE to the fullest.
