Why immediate surgery before I know if its anywhere else

Diagnosed by bx with path results received July 20 2011 3 days before my 49th bd. ILC grade two 5mm approx with tissue involvement. est and prog positive, her2 neg. So I was told to head straight to the surgeon. I guess I believe in quality of life but why is it that you do not see an oncologist first? I am having a bilateral mastectomy on Aug 10th with immediate reconstruction. Did not op for lumpectomy because I do not want radiation and after reading all the studies I know this thing is sneaky and can appear in the other breast. Plus I was on estrogen since age 34 for a total hysterectomy including ovaries for cyst and endometriosis until last year when I switched to bioidenticals. Anyway would treatment be different if it has metastasized? Also ladies any advice for pre and post surgery?

I asked my Onc the treatment question and was told it would be treated the same way.  As for SX advise, I bought a surgical camisole.  It was nice. Zipped up the front so I didn't have to raise my arms to get it on.  Also had pockets for the JP drains that will be hanging out of your body.  Had little fiber puffs you could put in so it didnt look like you had SX. Best of all 2 of them were  covered by my insurance.

dixiebell - Just a thought, ask your surgeon/hospital about the camisole.  I woke up from BMX with one already on, so I didn't need to purchase one.  Same kind with the pockets for drains and little fluffs.  I did immediate recon so didn't need the fluffs, but they came in handy 2 months later when I lost the left side of the recon!  As far as seeing the MO prior to surgery, I would ask for it if it would make you feel better informed, or give you a more clear picture of your treatment plan, but I think it is pretty standard with a small sized tumor to go to surgery first.  I had a positive SNB that was not discovered until post-op path after my BMX and my MO (and BS) wanted all suspected or known cancer removed prior to the start of chemo, so I had an additional surgery 5 weeks later.

great for getting the appt, start writing down your questions for the visit, take a pal if you can at all as the brain does get foggy and hard to remember everything

good luck and keep on asking why

dixiebell - no problem, happy to help.  A positive SNB is cancer found in my sentinel lymph node taken during my bi-lateral mastectomy.  I had further nodes removed 5 weeks later as a result, and more cancer was found in one additional lymph node.

You might want to invest in one of those little pocket tape recorders, and record your appointment.  My Dad did that when he was diagnosed with lung CA.  I have a massive binder with every shred of paperwork generated by BC.  I recommend getting copies of all scans, path reports, insurance referrals, bills, etc.  I have checked back on many of these reports at later dates to clarify details.  Some docs will even let you see or have copies of appointment notes.

I am glad you were able to see a MO (medical oncologist) prior to surgery.  Proudtospin is right - ask every question, in fact, you should take a list with you. I am 11 months into this and still write down my questions and take them with me because new ones come up all the time!
