Welcome Amy, TSB and michelle13!!!
TSB, wow you had a ton of lymph nodes removed, was it some from both sides??? I'm putting my order together for headcovers now....
Amy, your baby in your avatar is adorable!!!! Sometimes I wish my daughter (she's 8) was too young to understand this whole thing.....I still haven't told her about chemo and losing my hair....it's so hard to find the words and not show fear!!!
Michelle.... Check with your insurance for sure on any allowance for a wig.... really allows us to get a nicer one with less out of pocket. And than the scarves on headcovers.com are very reasonably priced too!! -
Thank you Madismommy! Our daughter is a joy and makes everything better at the end of the day. Last August 4th I was put on bed rest to keep the pregnancy and this August 4th is my first chemo. We live in a neighborhood of 26 kids under the age of 13... We are very close, like family and spend time together every weekend. I was concerned about the kids when I lose my hair or was sick. I told the parents that I wouldn't answer any of the kids questions (in case I said the wrong thing). They have found books on how to explain it to the kids and say they are very good.
Have a wonderful weekend!! My hubby is taking me out on a date tonight since we start chemo next week
~Amy

Madismommy, I am sorry about your arm! I am sure it must be uncomfortable and frustrating! I had a lumpectumy 1 mon ago and had 1 node removed. I have a heaviness inside my upper arm, and occasional wierd pains-but, I hope you and TMS heal up well!
Have fun tonight, Amy! I start chemo this week as well! Cheers to all of us and to conquering this obnoxious beast!
-
Hi - I'm starting TC 4x on Aug. 4th. Don't know what else to say. Will be reading all your posts!
-
Hi girls,
May I join as well? 'll be starting on August 24th - 4 DD of AC then 4 DD of Taxol. I was supposed to start beginning of June but plans have changed and I had the MX first.Leaving on a 2-week vacation next Saturday, so chemo is being delayed till the 24th which is not too bad as I still have some fluid around the scar. Can't say that I'm really exited, but glad to have such a great company on the journey.Good luck to everybody!
-
Welcome zanoza!!!! I'm starting right around that same time frame as you, still waiting on full recovery of AND incision, and it bust open last weekend.... Have a great time on your vacation!!!!!
Amy...hope you have fun on date night, gosh it's been SO long since I've felt up to going out, actually I know when it was....the Friday night before my BMX in June.... I'm overdue for one!!
I notice a lot of you are getting only 4 infusions but are getting 4 more of straight taxol after.... And I'm getting taxotere with with AC or just C but 6 times..... I wonder why I have 6 and than I have the other "T" than most??? Age maybe? My cancer seems pretty similar to most, except my 1 dang lymph node??? -
AJTaylor my heart goes out to you with a little one at home. I am thankful my kids are teenagers though my son has autism. Delighted you have an awesome hub and other supportive people. But you are right no one quite knows what it feels like to actually have to go through all of this. I am thankful for this forum.
Have all of your heard about CARINGBRIDGE.ORG? It is a website that allows people in your life to see how you are doing without bothering you and gives you a way of keeping people updated through the convenience of posting updates. They in turn can write you notes of encouragement. You can make it as private as you want. You can check me out at www.caringbridge.org/visit/sharonevans. You will have to register an e-mail and password for security to see my site. If you don't want to do that you can just visit caringbridge.org to see if it is right for you.
Someone also told me the American Cancer Society in some areas has connections to people who will clean your house, help with transportation, one on one mentoring with a cancer survivor etc. while you are going through treatment. Contact your local American Cancer Society to see what resources they have available. They also have a free workshop called Looking Good..it gives all kinds of beauty tips and free goodie bag for participants.
Thanks for listening. -
Zanoza you and I are starting on the same day. I'll be thinking of you. Have a wonderful vacation and enjoy a lot of tasty food because we won't be able to taste a lot of food at least I won't once treatment begins.
-
Welcome to all of you who just joined our August group. Michelle, thank you for stopping by with your words of encouragement. That was very kind. It's so wonderful to know that a year from now, we'll be ourselves again.
My first chemo is August 1st. I wish I could postpone it for a couple more weeks so I could enjoy the summer a bit longer with my kids. But I am afraid that is not an option. Anyone else on Taxotere, Carboplatin and Herceptin this month?
-
Oh I can't wait til a year from now!!! Where's the fast forward button on this ride?
I spoke too soon....my port is driving me crazy today....not sure why because it hasn't bothered me at all in over 3 weeks, the incision is almost totally healed and I haven't even used it for anything yet???? Weird.... It's kind of like a pins/needles itchy feeling????
Musicalmom, I follow a friend of mine on caringbridge....it's a great site to keep people informed!!! I have a separate page on Facebook that my aunt started where I can post any thoughts, updates, etc....a lot of my family and friends were on FB so it's worked pretty well. And my aunt set it up where it's totally closed and I'm the only one that add members to it, so it makes my privacy safe.... Sometimes FB isn't very private!!! And anyway of mass communication all at once with this roller coaster is great or otherwise we seem to just repeat ourselves over and over and over with our status. -
I will definitely check out caringbridge.org! Thank you musicalmom!

Ellen,
Thanks for letting me know about your post, happy to join you all. Looks like we're in the same boat. I had 8 total surgeries since March, bilat lumpectomies with re-excisions, bilat sentinel node 3/11 on left, 0/1 on right. Took 5 biopsies to find it all as mammo/us didn't find anything. Oncotypes low at 10/14, only 2-3% benefit of doing chemo, but heaven forbid if there's something floating around and multiplying somewhere else in my body! I'm starting TC 4X on Wed Aug 4th. It took alot for me to agree to chemo as I am extremely phobic about it. Meeting with Girls on the Go this week for wig advice. They come to your house! I'm so tired from all thats transpired I don't have the energy to exercise and with the heat the east coast has been having this summer who wants to get even more hot and sweaty??? I'm worried about being fat and bald from the chemo.
-
hey there, edoyrest! I am glad you are here, I believe that you and I are the only ones so far who are on TC x4? I walked into the onco's office and said " Give me the whole shebang " Hmnn, so now weds. is looming on the horizon, and I feel like turning my horse around and galloping off in any other direction! So, it's buck up weekend for me, I guess. So here's a timely question - What are you all doing to prepare? The 2 top posts on the chemo forum are helpful. Any other thoughts/ideas? Also, is it true that baths and lake swimming are out while on chemo?
-
Oooh. Freakish, as my 18 yr old would say! We were writing at the same time. edoyrest, one of us has the date wrong - August 3rd is WED., right? So, are you atarting on WED the 3rd or thurs the 4th? Am I the one confused? Argh, can you imagine showing up on the wrong day and missing your start day, NOT good!!
-
Ellen,
If I had a horse, I'd gallop away with you! I have that same fight/flight feeling as well! Ativan helps when it gets really bad. My onc told me to do whatever I want, i.e. workout in the gym, however I'm kinda phobic about germs as well, especially in light of the chemo. Who knows who sneezed or sweated on that cycle before I get on it? I would ask your onc about the swimming. I've read the lists on preparing for chemo, will have to reread cause I was not wholeheartedly sold on chemo at the time. I'm definitely looking into the wigs, night caps, false eyelashes and eyebrows on headcovers.com. Not sure what I'll need, but have my shopping cart full and ready to order when I do.
-
Ellen, It is Wed the 3rd, my onc is only at that site on Weds. Was wondering about that when I posted it, was too tired to look at the calendar, haha! I have a 17 yr old son, its tough at times going through BC with teenagers in the house! My 12 yr old daughter is so much more understanding and supportive.
-
Edoyrest,
Wow you have been through so much all ready. It is no wonder you are tired. Barbara Delinsky the fiction writer and fellow BC survivor wrote a nice book called Uplift with oodles of advice from BC survivors on every relevant topic we face. Women sent her their tips and she put it all together in this book. If you have a kindle you can try a sample. I still have several weeks to go but I am feeling like I want to taste all my favorite foods, take walks on the beach, clean my house, try to get sleep (which is hard) and spend quality time with my family. Gosh that list makes me tired. Have a peaceful weekend and know we are rooting for all of you starting this coming week. If you have prayer requests send them my way. We love to pray. -
Musicalmom,
Which books do you recommend for Kindle and which are better as actual books?
Question for all- how soon after you were told by MC you needed chemo did things start rolling? The waiting between each step seems so long! At the moment I'm not nervous about getting treatment, just anxious to start. I have a feeling that will change once I have a date.
Many (((Hugs))) to those starting treatment this coming week! -
Hi All, I have my next dr.s appt. Aug. 3rd I'm just waiting for the onco report to determine chemo, if the numbers are high aparently I will be starting in August then sometime in late feb or early Mar. I will be having a double mastecomy and then 5 years of tomoxifin... please excuse my spelling (it's never been a strong point for me) Anyway I am terrified of chemo I don't know exactly why but that not more surgery scares me... I'm 43 yrs of age very happily married with 3 beautiful daughters (16, 13 and 10) and my little sister has been proceedure partner is going to be away for the next oncology appt. so for 1st time I have to head in alone for results (I'm terrified of that too the last appt I went to alone the told me I had cancer) I was out of work when I was diagnosed and still am now and so my hubby has to work (we need the money too much for him to miss even 1 day of work at the moment - wow I guess thats enough of my life story but it feels good to write it out
-
leighsa- my onco said chemo needs to start within 2 months after surgery/diagnosis. The waiting and wondering is hard.
LisaWade- the appts are scary. I have tried to change my perspective on the chemo. I imagined how I would feel if they told me that I couldn't have the chemo (for some reason) And I realised that I am grateful for the chemo and the good stuff it can do. And the amazing nurses that will be helping me. Still, I get teary and very scared. But, I know it is something that my body needs to have now, as sucky as that is- I am trying to accept my new reality! And, yes writing her is very carthartic!!!
-
Oh and leighsa, I met w/ my onco 3 weeks after lumpectumy. I could have started the next week if I wanted, but i needed to get some stuff done so I waited a bit. I start TC on weds. I think you usually start 2 weeks after you are told?
-
Madismommy: Nope, all the lymph nodes were from the Left side. I guess I just had a lot of them.
-
Leighsa
I found the Uplift book worked well on Kindle. Another BC survivor gave me several of her favorite books. I was reading Suzanne Sommers and a new nutrition book highly recommended called Anti Cancer on the Kindle as well. I think if I am going back and forth and want to put sticky notes in and find stuff fast I might stick with a regular book which you can pass on to another sister in the future.
After onc meeting I think you have about 3 weeks before chemo can start, In my case I had to have a pre-port appt then have the port put in another day and also arrange for an heart test because the Herceptin can cause heart issues (Oh joy!). I also had something I really wanted to attend in Sept so they arranged the date knowing that I would be feeling better by the time the event came around. So there could be different factors. I was told it is better to wait a week after the port is put in because the area is tender. -
TSB... Wow, I think you qualify for a record on that one??? How's your arm and shoulder feeling, okay??? Ive had 19 total on my left side and it's numb a lot and still not healed. My AND incision drives me crazy irritated a lot and I still can't use the arm/ hand much at all. My AND was July 13th.
I wasn't really given a time frame on when chemo had to start....the only thing I was told was I had to be totally healed from the BMX (6/14) and AND (7/13) and I'm still not there yet.... I'm hoping soon though!!! I have my Muga scan and training in a a week and shooting for the week of Aug.22 sometime as D day....or I guess that would be C day?? -
Musicalmom & Madismommy - thanks for the worm welcome
leighsa - my onc. said up to 12 weeks after the surgery is still fine for the chemo waiting, but it depends on the actual characteristics of your cancer, my co-worker had to start 5 weeks after surgery because hers was spreading really fast and 15 of 17 nodes were positive.
Madismommy - I would ask your onc. why he chose exactly that combination/duration of chemo, he/she should be able to give you the clear explanation. This is what I did with mine anyway... I'm kinda person who asks a lot and I really don't like doing something I don't understand. My onc. even said that after my appointment his tongue was hurting
-
Madismommy: My AND was July 20th and my arm and shoulder feel really good. The only thing that really bothers me is the drain site and some cording I got from my SNB. I try to stretch the arm and use it as much as possible and this really helps. I've got one numb spot on the back of my arm and in the axilla but it's better than a week ago when I was numb to the elbow. The one numb spot on the back of my arm feels sunburned and sometimes it feels like a bee sting. Kinda weird, huh? My AND incision looks and feels great. Did they use dermabond (glue) on yours?
-
I had my lumpectomy and SNB (left side) on July 13th and I'm still quite sore. The incisions themselves don't bother me at all, but areas to the left of each incision do. I also have a lot of discomfort along the ribs right were a bra hits. I have small dense breasts and the mass and therefore incision was below the nipple. The breast itself is still swollen (fullest it's been in years after BFing 5 kids) and the nipple is inverted a lot more then before the surgery. I also have the numbness in the back of my arm and axillary area- nervous to shave! The back of the arm also feels painful if it's touched, like TSB1, it feels sunburned. Another strange sensation I have is when I drink something cold. It feels like the ice cold fluid is filling my breast-it is so cold! It goes away after a few sips. I realize that nerves were cut and are regenerating, but it's such a weird sensation. Anyone else experience this?
-
Just finished reading the books/booklets Chemo Companion, Chemotherapy and You and Understanding Breast Cancer and all of a sudden felt overwhelmed reading about all the side effects. The list of don'ts is huge...trying to figure out food, plastic forks, dealing with pain and wearing shoes all the time all on top of chemo brain. I guess it all sounded so serious (I know it is) and I wondered if I would be able to keep track of everything. Now I need to find a barf bucket,,,here's hoping most of us won't get all the side effects.
I think that is enough reading for tonight. -
I also get sharp/burning shooting sensations randomly that take breath away and make me cup my breast.
-
Leighsa: I also get that cold sensation in my chest when I drink something cold. It's the weirdest feeling. I've read here on the board that others have the same thing happen to them.
