I was only on page 470 and saw "pork chops and sauerkraut" and had to jump to the end and jump into the fray. That was my birthday meal every year growing up and whenever I would visit my parents when they retired. Yum yum yum!! Although, my dad would blanche all the "sour" out of it, then add vinegar, what's up with that? I'm so happy that my little 'un and my BF are also sauerkraut conessurs (crap, how do you spell that).

I'm anti-beet and pro-brussels sprouts, but it took getting BC to even attempt eating the sprout. I was the pickiest kid of the four of us girls, to the point mom would make me a separate meal for dinner. How spoiled was ?! And I have to confess, I am also anti-cheese. Please don't hate on me, girls, I'm never going to budge on that one. (I order cheeseless pizza on Friday nights. Call me weird, but just call me...)

Going back to finish reading. I'm sure I won't be able to keep up with you guys. I'm supposed to exercise, so I'm standing and reading and doing leg lifts. Think that'll do it?

Haven't gone yet was looking up key lime pie, not sure if we can get that type of lime but will look.

Marmite is a thick brown black spread which is made from the yeast/malt residue from the beer making process. It is something we give our children as babies - marmite on toast, cheese and marmite on toast. It is an acquired taste. The Australians make vegemite which is similar.  They are both great in soups and stews and gravy as flavouring. So basically its a yeast extract.

    Athena,

Is it Kramerbooks on Wisconsin? When I lived there it was a book store and cafe. I spent my children's inheritance there many times over. Wait, I don't have any children. Good thing!

Joan, wow anti-beet and anti-cheese, that's tough to overlook.  Wink

Have you tried roasted beets, because truly they are not like canned or pickled or boiled.

I won't try to convert you to cheese, but I'm just sad to think of people missing the wonder of beets.

Cherryl, It's Krammerbooks on Connecticut, about ten feet from Q street, just in front of one of the entrances to Dupont Circle Metro station.

Too funny - "If I had to make changes to this organization I would...not mention food."  And apparently she really hates beets.

I'm trying to think of what type of person that would describe....definitely not a foodie so maybe I can see why this one hates us.

yes hillck, i was just looking at the greatnonprofits website athena's post alerted me to...it is very negative feedback for bco to have to deal with. there is alot of reference to the 'food posts'..i think people are remembering back a while when food jokes were used in this friendship thread to discuss people. and references to the 'alert' posts that are frequent on this thread...what is the purpose of alerting each other here to a new post/opinion/member?...if you dont mind me asking.

My BF is a hickerbilly from Kentucky (his description) and fries everything. Everything! He literally dragged his feet on helping me prepare the roasted veggies the other night (because he does most of the cooking, as I'm, well, not very good at it). But he loved them and said he was willing to make them again... Just not too often so he won't get "bored" with them. LOL. RR-I appreciate your latitude on the cheese, so I may give a try on the beets. I'm (thank goodness) way less picky now than I was as a child.

Luan, really we talk about food because we like food.  It would be nice if you would join in the conversation.  I'd like to hear what types of food you like.

Oh, Luan I didn't know you were having a bad time with treatment.  I'm sorry you're having appetite issues.  Chemo was very hard on my appetite.  I love to eat, but during that time eating just became a job I had to do, just had to eat enough to keep my weight up.

Another native Kentuckian here - when I grew up we fried everything. I still love fried pork chops. I did not realize until recently that some people ROASTED vegetables. This thread has given me a serious craving for fried pork chops!

Alyson, I kind of sort of knew what marmite was - and even tried it many years ago - but I had no idea it was a by-product of beer-making!

Not even that is enough to get me to try it again, though.

(I went to school with a guy from Perth who packed a vegemite sandwich for lunch every single day.)

    Edited for spelling.

Changes, do you like gravy with your pork chops?  Try roasting veggies you'd be surprised how much flavor that gives them.

Luan- please stay. If you don't want to talk about food....do you have any good jokes? or maybe you could tell us about the best vacation you've been on. I'm interested to hear from you. I'm sorry you're not feeling well.

Night, Barbara. I had a Kashi lemongrass chicken frozen dinner. Meh. I like lemongrass, a lot, but this was quite overwhelmingly LEMONGRASS!!!!!!!!!! So I had a popsicle to get over it. Not feeling much like cooking today.

Doing a factory restore on my 'puter's hard drive to get rid of the virus. Unfortunately, it seems to be stuck in one section of "checking the computer's performance.". It has been doing that in one place for an hour. *sigh* I didn't want to do this on a "school night," but DH started it and then went to bed. (exasperated eye-roll). I may just leave the damn thing to be stuck overnight and reset tomorrow (and do a factory restore from disks).

I haven't been down to Kramerbooks in years. I used to go to Childe Harold for lunch with my girlfriend up the street from Kramer's. but Childe Harold is gone now...

Thans, Athena for the info. My friends who still live out there blame me for the demise of Garfinkel's. I dont know how long you have lived in DC, but it was a great hi-end department store and I loved it. It closed a couple years after I moved to Chicago. I'm sorry, but I can only suppport one economy at a time.

    Eta -- GARFINKEL'S!!! I MISS GARFINKEL'S! AND WOODIE'S

    Stopping whine now.

changes ... I learned about roasting veggies from here too.  So far I've tried cauliflower and brussel sprouts and asparagus and liked them all.  I have a commitment to a friend to try roasted beets ... someday :)

Luan ... sorry you aren't feeling well.

Food is just a subject we have in common since as women we are usually the cooks in the family.  Yet there are enough differences in regional dishes and tastes to make for a fun ... and sometimes educational ... or silly ... conversation.  I'm sorry if anybody is reading anything else into it but I don't understand how they could either.
