At one work luncheon a group of us got in a discussion about which foods went with what.  You know ... like pork chops and sauerkraut - or ham and scalloped potatoes - meat loaf and mashed potatoes.  It was a riot to find out how different our combinations were.

The first time I remember eating beets my father smacked his lips and said, "tastes just like candy!" I tried them and they didn't. Never liked them since, so add me to the "no beets thank you" club. They're about the only food I just really don't enjoy. However, we lived in Amish country for a while, and I did enjoy the eggs soaked in the beet juice (is that pickled?). Perhaps someday I will again try a beet. Maybe.

My husband and I each have one food we don't eat. For me it's beets, for him it's sauerkraut.

Oh, oh, we eat cantelope with vanilla ice cream too! And blueberries would only make it better! But no icecream on my avocado, please. I've heard there are people who do that too.

Hi all. Haven't posted here in ages(not since KK passed) Have had a lot of reading to do to catch up and won't comment on that.

Love beets and here in this part of the world you get them in burgers - yum.  All the food talk is making me hungry and its only mid morning.

How about cabbage boiled for 20 minutes??? yukky.

WhiteRabbit i don't know if I'm grown up enough to share a thread with a woman who is against beets. . . you non-beet people!  you aren't like us RealVeggieLovers.....why you are practically carnivores. . . and evil, don't forget evil. . . .

I think you need to live in another thread.  I certainly can't talk to you rationally now that you have revealled your true nature. . . .

oh Bren, CherrylH, Patty, say it isn't so!!!!!!!!!!! please, please don't go to the dark side of the non beet eaters.  Step back into the light!

Here, look, I'll roast them for you and sprinkle them with a bit of sea salt and a slosh of my special cache of French walnut oil . . . now come on, try them, just a bite....isn't that yummy?

OK ... maybe we can compromise here.  I have never tasted beets roasted.  There is a possibility (slim) that I could be converted.  Carnivores ... steak ... yum Smile

    3mons,

I'm going out on a limb here and don't know how this is going to end. I AM a true carnivore!! I Luvs, luvs me meat. I love veggies too, just not that particular b-word one.

So I'm going to hit send. Turn off my computer. Leave my office and drive home. I can't wait to get a response from you, revealing my fate on this thread.

WhiteRabbit if all you have ever had was canned or boiled they taste completley different. I can't stand canned in any shape nor do I like them boiled.

    LOL 3mons and Cherryl ...

Loves me some sauerkraut ... it loves me less and less the older I get.  Not to get graphic but every time somebody is dealing with 'that particular issue' from pain meds I want to suggest a jar of sauerkraut.

We had the scoop of ice cream in the cantelope too.  My mothers favorite recipe was chicken legs baked in Kraft's Catalina salad dressing.  My sister and I would fight over who got the skin off of my dad's chicken leg!Money mouth

We have beetroot on hamburgers in Oz too - that's what makes them so delicious. It's the only time I eat beets.

Patty -- When cantaloupe was in season, my mother would serve a half "loupe" with vanilla ice cream -- my dad's favourite!  I hated cantaloupe then, I love it now!

We had ice cream in our cantaloupe at my Polish Grandma's house.  At my Scottish Grandma's, it was a salt shaker on the side.

Are the beets on the burgers boiled or pickled?  Might have to try it, just to see.

Count me in as another one that doesn't like Beets!

I am bummed.  I went to the urologist today and she wants to do an exploratory procedure on me under general anesthesia which will be done next Tuesday.  On Wed I was supposed to go see the PS but I guess I will need to cancel that in case of complications from the procedure.

Apparently my bladder lining is thin and irritated from the chemo as I have had this problem since chemo and sex is too damm painful.  I want to get to the bottom of this and find out what is going on.  I was upset when she just started writing a prescription and told her that I wanted tests or whatever - I am not going to play around with this any longer so she mentioned the procedure and said there is a 50% chance that the irritation will go away but if not at least she can get in there and find out what is wrong.

My mother boiled cabbage - I don't know for how long, but I'd guess at least 20 or 30 minutes. I thought it was vile and it made the house smell horrible. I detested cooked cabbage UNTIL a friend served it - cooked on the grill in a foil packet with chunks of green pepper and onions. Drizzled with (you guessed it) bacon grease. This was years ago and I now substitute olive oil. One of my favorite dishes.

I love roasted beets, but not those red canned things that we got in the school cafeteria. No way would I try those eggs in the huge jar next to the cash register.

Alpal thats just how my mother and grandmother did cabbage. I now love lighted cooked cabbage and by the way I love my meat as well but since I had a hernia repair last year haven't been able to eat so much. Have to have my steak medium rare.

Never had cantaloupe with ice cream. Love it with cottage cheese and a bit of salt. Or proscuitto (sp? Too lazy to get up and get the dictionary). Yum, yum.

I don't like hot beets. My mom used to cook canned beets (of course they were already good and dead) and make some sort of syrup to put on them. . If that is the only kind of beet you ever had, you can be forgiven for not liking beets.

Beets on hamburgers ... Sounds yummy!

PiP, i love the Catalina dressing story. i remember when we were "allowed" to eat chicken skin!

Bacon grease....oooooooooooohhhhhhh . Mom used to pour the bacon grease into a cup she kept on the stove. Then whenever she needed cooking grease for something, she would just scoop out a spoonful. How did we live to grow up?

Wilted lettucs! Did any of your mothers make wilted lettuce? Cut up some bacon, fry it, fry up some onion pieces until slightly softened, then pour in a little vinegar and a shake of sugar, warm it up and pour it over lettuce. Yum yum!

And, apropos of .... Well, apropos... Sometimes food is just food.

The lightbulb just came on!  I was curious about putting salt on cantaloupe to make it sweeter.  and HL just gave me the clue -- prosciutto!  The Italians (smartest cooks in the world, IMO) probably started putting prosciutto on cantaloupe to actually make the loupe taste sweeter, cuz prosciutto is so salty.  It's my favourite first course in the summer.

jancie ((hugs)) I am sorry.  Are they sure that the bladder is the problem?  I had the amazingly painful sex but it was uterine related.  The estring thing has been great. . . .I know some people are heavy into avoiding anything with estrogene but my oncologist gave me the prescription and said its a completely different thing than plain old estrogen.

BinVa  my mother could cook--she just doesn't like doing it and doesn't really appreciate things that take time.  so a roast that can be tossed in the oven gets a thumbs up as does fish that only takes a few minutes.  But things that take time and energy--why bother.  I still remember spending a day making deep dish pizza for her--homemade dough, roasted veggies, sausage from the italian market and she complained that it was just pizza.  . .
