The first time I remember eating beets my father smacked his lips and said, "tastes just like candy!" I tried them and they didn't. Never liked them since, so add me to the "no beets thank you" club. They're about the only food I just really don't enjoy. However, we lived in Amish country for a while, and I did enjoy the eggs soaked in the beet juice (is that pickled?). Perhaps someday I will again try a beet. Maybe.

My husband and I each have one food we don't eat. For me it's beets, for him it's sauerkraut. 

Oh, oh, we eat cantelope with vanilla ice cream too! And blueberries would only make it better! But no icecream on my avocado, please. I've heard there are people who do that too. 

WhiteRabbit i don't know if I'm grown up enough to share a thread with a woman who is against beets. . . you non-beet people!  you aren't like us RealVeggieLovers.....why you are practically carnivores. . . and evil, don't forget evil. . . .

I only eat sauerkraut with Rubin sandwich which I must say I love.

OK ... maybe we can compromise here.  I have never tasted beets roasted.  There is a possibility (slim) that I could be converted.  Carnivores ... steak ... yum

WhiteRabbit if all you have ever had was canned or boiled they taste completley different. I can't stand canned in any shape nor do I like them boiled.

Even the duck says we welcome carnivores here.

Hmm, I haven't had beets roasted, just pickled or boiled. I might have to try them roasted and see.

We have beetroot on hamburgers in Oz too - that's what makes them so delicious. It's the only time I eat beets.

i go to an Arabian store and they serve home made ice cream with carrot juice..   it's actually pretty good.

Count me in as another one that doesn't like Beets!

I am bummed.  I went to the urologist today and she wants to do an exploratory procedure on me under general anesthesia which will be done next Tuesday.  On Wed I was supposed to go see the PS but I guess I will need to cancel that in case of complications from the procedure.

Apparently my bladder lining is thin and irritated from the chemo as I have had this problem since chemo and sex is too damm painful.  I want to get to the bottom of this and find out what is going on.  I was upset when she just started writing a prescription and told her that I wanted tests or whatever - I am not going to play around with this any longer so she mentioned the procedure and said there is a 50% chance that the irritation will go away but if not at least she can get in there and find out what is wrong.

Jancie - ouch - you definitely need to get it investigated.

Never had cantaloupe with ice cream. Love it with cottage cheese and a bit of salt. Or proscuitto (sp? Too lazy to get up and get the dictionary). Yum, yum.

I don't like hot beets. My mom used to cook canned beets (of course they were already good and dead) and make some sort of syrup to put on them. . If that is the only kind of beet you ever had, you can be forgiven for not liking beets.

Bacon grease....oooooooooooohhhhhhh . Mom used to pour the bacon grease into a cup she kept on the stove. Then whenever she needed cooking grease for something, she would just scoop out a spoonful. How did we live to grow up?

Wilted lettucs! Did any of your mothers make wilted lettuce? Cut up some bacon, fry it, fry up some onion pieces until slightly softened, then pour in a little vinegar and a shake of sugar, warm it up and pour it over lettuce. Yum yum!

And, apropos of .... Well, apropos... Sometimes food is just food.

The lightbulb just came on!  I was curious about putting salt on cantaloupe to make it sweeter.  and HL just gave me the clue -- prosciutto!  The Italians (smartest cooks in the world, IMO) probably started putting prosciutto on cantaloupe to actually make the loupe taste sweeter, cuz prosciutto is so salty.  It's my favourite first course in the summer.

jancie ((hugs)) I am sorry.  Are they sure that the bladder is the problem?  I had the amazingly painful sex but it was uterine related.  The estring thing has been great. . . .I know some people are heavy into avoiding anything with estrogene but my oncologist gave me the prescription and said its a completely different thing than plain old estrogen.

BinVa  my mother could cook--she just doesn't like doing it and doesn't really appreciate things that take time.  so a roast that can be tossed in the oven gets a thumbs up as does fish that only takes a few minutes.  But things that take time and energy--why bother.  I still remember spending a day making deep dish pizza for her--homemade dough, roasted veggies, sausage from the italian market and she complained that it was just pizza.  . .
