Hi everybody,

just 4 days ago my wife has been diagnosed with DCIS. She had gave birth 4 months ago and was no able to breast-feed because she had not enough milk. About two months ago, she had felt a new lump in the right breast and after an ultrasound scan, a mammography and a histological biopsy with Mammotome this is the diagnose:

DCIS solid-type, comedo and clinging, high grade, with necrosis, encircled by a chronic inflammatory muff.

ER+ 98% PR+ 70% Ki67 40% HER2/neu or CerbB2 3+

The surgeon has been sheduled the operation for next week (lumpectomy with wide section, SLB and ELIOT).

I need help to understand was will be happen ...

Tx to all

Mickey

Hi Mickey  I am sorry you are going through this, You really need to talk to the surgeon and have them explain what is going on and what will happen with your wife's surgery... There is a DCIS forum on here and you can read some of the outcomes of some of the women who have experienced similar issues.  I had DCIS in my left breast and had a a lumpectomy followed by a mastectomy, not every woman experiences the same thing.  There are many types of treatment and the doctor will be able to tell you how they will proceed with your wifes case.  I wish the both of you well and hope for the best on her lumpectomy especially since you have a newborn child to take care of as well.  Just remember not to panic and really talk to your Doctor, also there is a definition page on here as well that will help with some of the diagnostic terms.  Stay strong and lean on each other through this difficult time.

Hi Mickey, many women only need lumpectomy and radiation so try not to worry about mastectomy yet.  The pathology of the lumpectomy will determine what is needed.

There was a book that helped my husband a lot.  It is called, "Breast Cancer Husband" by Marc Silver.  You might want to try to get a copy of it.  It's easy to find online and in bookstores and it's not expensive - right now Amazon lists it for $6.38

    Hi Mickey,

My heart goes out to your wife... I was just diagnosed with DCIS, comedo necrosis, 99% ER, 77% ER,  HER2 (positive 3+) and am seeing a plastic surgeon tomorrow for bilateral mastectomy.  They recommended mastectomy for me because when they did the MRI they found some other spots (multi centric disease) and I'm not a candidate for radiation after lumpectomy because I have a prior history of leukemia.

My first choice was definately lumpectomy and I was even scheduled for the procedure to take place this Friday but when my MRI results came back and after the consult with the oncologist the whole scenario changed for me.

    Good luck to you both.

    Missy

Mickey, I forgot to add that your wife might ask about an MRI if her doctors haven't already scheduled one.  That can help determine the extent of disease.
